HIGHLIGHTS

• Sail aboard a historic ship between the islands and explore the Azores archipelago.

• Admire the breathtaking landscapes and unique hiking trails in Santa Maria.

• Visit the southernmost and least visited island of the Azores.

• End your visit in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, the largest and most important island of the Azores.

Sail through the Azores from Terceira to Santa Maria, known as the sunshine island. En route you have a good chance of observing dolphins, whales and other marine life.

August is an excellent time for diving in Santa Maria. The water is warm, visibility is optimal and encounters with whale sharks, pelagic rays and blue sharks are more likely.

Many scenes from "Island of Giants", a documentary by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Nuno Sá, were filmed here.

As a frequent guest aboard the Santa Maria Manuela during scientific expeditions, he captures unique marine inhabitants.

We spend a few days in Santa Maria, giving you time to explore the area.

Local dive centres and guides offer opportunities for diving and hiking.

On board, help the crew hoist the sails or take the helm and feel how the ship responds to your hand on the wheel.

Our crew are happy to share their knowledge and encourage everyone to join in with the sailing. Take part in a knot-tying lesson, swap sea stories with other travellers or, weather permitting, climb the mast or relax on the bowsprit.

Evenings end with a drink on deck as the sun sets. We finish our voyage in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores.

Take time to visit the churches of São Sebastião, São Pedro and São José, as well as the convent and chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança.

In the west, the volcanic lakes of Sete Cidades form the island's landmark.

WEATHER

Air temperature at sea is between 20°C and 26°C, water temperature between 22°C and 24°C. Winds are generally moderate and predominantly from the northwest or north, offering good sailing conditions.

August is the ideal and most stable month in the Atlantic for this voyage.
