The UBI-Funkzeugnis<\/span> \u2013 officially 'UKW-Sprechfunkzeugnis f\u00fcr den Binnenschifffahrtsfunk' \u2013 is the official authorisation to operate inland waters<\/span> a VHF radio system. Accordingly, the UBI radio course <\/span>(colloquially also known as the UBI-Funkschein<\/i>course) is aimed at skippers and crews who want to operate radios safely and legally on rivers, canals and lakes.<\/p>\n

As soon as a VHF radio is installed on your boat, at least one person on board must hold the UBI<\/span> \u2013 regardless of whether you are sailing privately or commercially. This radio certificate is required by law<\/span> in Germany and many other countries and is valid indefinitely<\/span>. For coastal and maritime radio areas, you will need the Short Range Certificate (SRC)<\/span> or Long Range Certificate (LRC); both complement the UBI and are usually obtained separately.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

To obtain the UBI-Funkschein, you only need to fulfil a few requirements \u2013 the UBI<\/span> is also suitable for beginners. Minimum age<\/b><\/span> is 15 years<\/i> (registration for the exam is possible from the age of 14 years + 9 months). No further prior knowledge or certificates are required<\/b><\/span>: you need neither a boat licence nor special language or technical knowledge. Everything you need to know about radio regulations and equipment technology is taught in the course. Of course, it doesn't hurt if you already bring basic knowledge of marine radio navigation or a boat licence \u2013 but it is not mandatory. (Note: The UBI examination is conducted entirely in German. In a UBI radio course<\/span> experienced instructors teach you all the knowledge you need for radio operation on inland waterways. Typically, the training is divided into a theory section<\/span> and practical exercises on the radio set \u2013 often compactly over a weekend or in evening sessions. You learn both the technical <\/i>and and legal background knowledge<\/i> as well as the practical handling<\/i> of the radio equipment.<\/p>\n
