Many trips depart from here, and first-time visitors to Breege usually want to know the same things: how the harbour is laid out, how to get there and how to reach the open Baltic from the bodden.

The essentials at a glance

Breege Harbour is set up as a waterway rest stop, with guest berths, electricity and water at the pontoons, showers, Wi-Fi and diesel.

It lies in the sheltered Breeger Bodden with no direct access to the Baltic Sea: you can only exit westwards through the Rassower Strom, after which you can head north to the Baltic or south towards Stralsund.

West of Breege begins the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park with its own navigation rules.

The nearest supermarkets and pharmacy are in the neighbouring village of Altenkirchen, about 2.7 kilometres as the crow flies from the harbour; the nearest A&E is in Bergen auf Rügen.

You can reach Breege-Juliusruh by train and bus via Bergen auf Rügen or Sassnitz.

Breege Harbour on Rügen: location and harbour at a glance

Breege Harbour lies on the northern shore of the Breeger Bodden in the seaside resort of Breege-Juliusruh, address Am Hafen 4. It is a sheltered bodden harbour from which you set off into the sailing area around Hiddensee and onto the Baltic Sea.

The Breeger Bodden belongs to the chain of North Rügen bodden waters. Breege itself lies on the south-eastern edge of the Wittow Peninsula, with Cape Arkona to the north at its tip. The Schaabe separates the bodden from the Baltic coast. To the south lies the Großer Jasmunder Bodden, but there is no route to the Baltic Sea through it. The only way out leads westwards into the Rassower Strom. This means the harbour is well protected from swell, but you have to sail several miles through the bodden waters for every Baltic passage.

Feature

Details

Position

approx. 54° 36.8′ N, 013° 21.3′ E

Waters

Breeger Bodden, North Rügen bodden waters

Guest berths

available, with electricity and water connections; enquire with the harbour master for current numbers

Maximum length

20 m

Maximum draught

2,5 m

Water level variation

normally up to about 0.3 m, no tides

Hafenmeister

Telephone 038391 579

Advance booking

not possible

Fuel

Diesel in harbour

All information: as of October 2026. Before arriving, it is worth a quick call to the harbourmaster, as berth numbers and facilities can change from season to season.

How do you berth in Breege harbour?

In Breege you moor either in a pile box, at a finger pontoon or to a buoy, depending on availability. You cannot reserve a berth, so register as a visiting boat with the harbourmaster, ideally by phone before entering on 038391 579.

If you enter a dolphin box bow-first, lay the stern lines over the two posts and make fast at the pontoon forward. For this, prepare lines with large loops on both sides before entering and hang fenders on both sides. At a finger pontoon you go alongside the narrow pontoon next to your berth. Expect up to 2 knots of current and give the boat enough play in the box for water-level fluctuations. For registration the most reliable way to reach the harbour master is by telephone.

What facilities does Breege harbour offer?

Breege harbour offers the standard facilities of a waterway rest stop: electricity and water at the berth, sanitary building, Wi-Fi and a diesel filling station.

You can get shower tokens from the harbourmaster; the Wi-Fi reaches into the area around the harbour building. There are suction systems for sewage and bilge water, an emptying point for chemical toilets and waste separation facilities. For working on your boat, there is a slipway with cable winch, a travellift and a boat shed, and a chandlery and sailmaker are on site. The berths are mixed: pile boxes, finger pontoons, moorings and onshore berths.

For an evening arrival it's best to arrange things beforehand with the harbourmaster. Dogs are permitted.

Right by the harbour you'll find a restaurant, a snack bar, a smokehouse and a small shop.

Where do you shop in Breege, and what do you need on the first day?

The nearest supermarkets are in Altenkirchen, about 2.7 kilometres as the crow flies north of the harbour: a Netto and an Edeka. It's a long walk, so it's better to take a car or bicycle.

At the harbour itself there's a small shop, a kiosk and a bread roll service, but that's not enough for a big shop. Further supermarkets can be found in Wiek and Dranske; in Juliusruh a small shop at the campsite opens during the season. You can hire bicycles in the village.

Where do you park in Breege?

At the harbour there are parking spaces for cars and trailers (as of October 2026). On public streets and squares in the municipality of Breege that are fitted with a parking ticket machine, parking incurs charges. The amounts are set out in the municipality's parking fee regulations. Whether the harbour car park is included and what a week costs, the harbour master will tell you.

Where are there chemists, doctors and A&E?

The nearest chemist is in Altenkirchen; GP practices can be found in Breege and in Altenkirchen. The nearest A&E is at Sana-Krankenhaus Rügen in Bergen auf Rügen, around 22 kilometres as the crow flies south of the harbour. It is staffed around the clock. By car the route is considerably longer; in an emergency always dial 112.

Outside surgery hours you can reach the on-call doctor service on 116 117, the chemist emergency service on 0800 0022833.

Which emergency numbers apply in Breege?

Ashore in Germany you dial 112 for ambulance, emergency doctor and fire brigade. On the water you reach the sea rescue co-ordination centre of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS) in Bremen via VHF channel 16 or by DSC on channel 70, call sign "Bremen Rescue", and around the clock by telephone on 0421 53687-0.

The sea rescuers have a volunteer station in Breege; their rescue boat lies in the water-based rest area.

How do you get to Breege?

You can reach Breege by car via Stralsund and the Rügen Bridge, or by public transport by train to Bergen auf Rügen or Sassnitz and then by bus.

By car

From Stralsund, take the Rügendamm or Rügen Bridge onto the B96 towards Sassnitz. At the Sagard/Altenkirchen junction, turn onto the L30; after about 20 kilometres you will reach Breege-Juliusruh. Alternatively, you can take the Wittow ferry to the Wittow peninsula.

By train and bus

By train, travel via Stralsund to Bergen auf Rügen or Sassnitz. Buses run from both stations operated by Verkehrsgesellschaft Vorpommern-Rügen towards Wittow, continuing to Juliusruh. Routes and departure times vary, so before travelling use the journey planner of Verkehrsgesellschaft and Deutsche Bahn and allow time for the walk from the bus stop to the harbour.

What is the sailing area around Breege like?

Around Breege you sail on shallow, sheltered bodden waters with no tides. The deeper areas are buoyed; outside the fairways it quickly becomes shallow.

Approaching the harbour during daylight is straightforward: you follow the buoys through the Breeger Bodden to the pontoons on the north shore. Expect currents of up to about 2 knots and water levels that normally vary by around 30 centimetres. In storms, the variations can be significantly greater even in the bodden. Breege is not suitable for yachts drawing more than 2.5 metres.

The bodden are a popular area for kitesurfers, windsurfers and stand-up paddlers, so on good days there is plenty of activity. Also watch out for the excursion boats that run between Breege and Hiddensee in summer, and for the Wittow ferry that crosses the Rassower Strom.

Do special nature protection rules apply in the bodden?

West of Breege begins the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park; its boundary runs through the Rassower Strom along the fairway. Special navigation rules apply within the national park.

In protection zones I and II, powered vessels may travel at a maximum of 12 knots on marked fairways and a maximum of 8 knots outside them. Exceptions exist further out, such as north of certain buoys in the Hiddensee fairway, where 16 knots are permitted. Jet skis and water skiing are prohibited in the protection zones, and individual water areas, such as the Libben and Bug areas, are completely closed or closed to powered boats. The legal basis is the Befahrensverordnung für die Nationalparke an der Küste Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns (as of October 2026). The current charts show exactly which areas are closed. The Generaldirektion Wasserstraßen und Schifffahrt is responsible for exemptions.

Which shipping forecast applies to the sailing area around Breege?

For sailing trips from Breege, the German Weather Service (DWD) shipping forecast for the North and Baltic Seas applies, together with the DWD coastal warnings for the Baltic coast. The shipping forecast is issued by the DWD's sea weather service in Hamburg.

The shipping forecast describes wind, weather, visibility and sea state for fixed sea areas; on the Baltic these are the Belts and Sound, Western, Southern and Southeastern Baltic. The coastal warnings apply to three sections of the German Baltic coast; around Rügen these are "east of Fehmarn to Rügen" and "east of Rügen". A wind warning is issued from 6 Beaufort mean wind, a gale warning from 8 Beaufort. They are issued around the clock.

You can read the current report on the DWD sea weather page or in the WarnWetter app. When under way you receive it via VHF coast radio, via NAVTEX and on the radio. Channels and broadcast times are published by the DWD in its overview for recreational and coastal shipping.

How do you reach the open Baltic from Breege?

From the Breeger Bodden you can only exit westwards through the Rassower Strom. After that, you either head north via the fairway north of Hiddensee to the open Baltic, or south through the bodden west of Rügen into the Strelasund to Stralsund.

The route north is the right one if you are heading towards Cape Arkona, Bornholm or Sweden. It leads through the national park; the fairways on the bodden side of Hiddensee are buoyed but shallow and narrow. Plan the bodden section as a separate part of your day and read the chart carefully.

Heading south, after the Rassower Strom you sail through the bodden between Hiddensee and Rügen and onwards via the Kubitzer Bodden into the Strelasund. Near Stralsund is the Ziegelgrabenbrücke, a movable bridge that only opens at fixed times. Beyond it opens the route to the Greifswalder Bodden and to Usedom. You should check the current opening times shortly before your passage, as they can change and the bridge can also be out of service.

Those sailing from the northern tip of Rügen along the east coast towards Sassnitz and further south will pass anchorages with large vessels. Prohibited areas may apply there, which are announced via nautical warnings and notices to mariners. How quickly things can become tight there is shown by our article on the collision of a sailing yacht off Rügen.

What charter bases are there in Breege?

Charter companies with bases in Breege harbour rent out sailing yachts for trips around Rügen and voyages across the Baltic Sea.

On the changeover days of the charter weeks there is correspondingly more activity at the pontoon, which you should bear in mind as a visiting berth holder when arriving.

What kinds of trips typically start from Breege?

Trips starting from Breege include mainly week-long sailing trips around Rügen and Hiddensee, crossings to Bornholm and Denmark, as well as sail training and skipper training on the sheltered Bodden waters.

Hiddensee is the classic first-day destination because you remain entirely within the Bodden. You can reach Stralsund via Rassower Strom and the Bodden west of Rügen. Those wanting open water sail north around Kap Arkona and onwards to Bornholm, the Danish islands or southern Sweden. For beginners the sailing area is attractive because there is significantly less sea state in the Bodden than on the open Baltic. A Skipper training or a sail training trip makes use of precisely that.

When planning trips with Baltic passages, factor in the Bodden section: by the time you reach open water, a good part of the morning has often passed. Before departure, checking the marine weather forecast from Deutscher Wetterdienst is routine, as the wind on the open Baltic is often considerably stronger than what is felt in harbour.

We present further harbours on the German Baltic coast in the profiles of Travemünde and the Marina Flensburg in Flensburg .

What is there to do ashore in Breege-Juliusruh?

Breege-Juliusruh is a small Baltic seaside resort with beach, promenade and spa park. That's quite sufficient for a harbour day or the time before departure. The distances below are as the crow flies from the harbour, measured on the map; the route is somewhat longer.

Breege was formerly a fishing village in which many captains settled. In 1929 it was merged with the neighbouring village of Juliusruh to form a seaside resort. In the Haus des Gastes in Juliusruh there is information and tickets for the excursion boats.

Beach and promenade at Juliusruh

The spa square on the promenade is around 1.7 kilometres from the harbour; on foot you're about 25 minutes' walk. The beach at Juliusruh has a bathing section supervised by the DLRG during the summer months, together with a signposted dog beach and beach chair hire. The promenade runs along the top of the dune, and along the coast you have the lighthouse at Kap Arkona in view. South of Juliusruh the beach merges into the natural beach of the Schaabe, good for a long walk.

Spa park Juliusruh

The spa park is around 1.5 kilometres from the harbour. Julius von der Lancken, after whom Juliusruh is named, laid it out from 1795 on dune sand. To be seen are, among other things, the more than 225-year-old lime trees and the swan house on an island in the pond. The park is freely accessible all year round.

Parish church Altenkirchen

The church in Altenkirchen is around 2.6 kilometres north of the harbour, so on the way to the supermarket. It dates from the 12th century and is one of the oldest churches on Rügen. Set into its masonry is an old picture stone in granite, the so-called Svantevitstein.

Kap Arkona

Kap Arkona is around 9 kilometres northeast of the harbour and is easily reached by bicycle, a good destination when the wind doesn't suit. At the northern tip stand the Schinkelturm of 1826/29 and the 35-metre-high lighthouse of 1902, which is still in operation today.

By excursion boat to Hiddensee

In season, excursion boats depart from the harbour through the Bodden waters to Hiddensee; in September there are trips for crane watching. During the Störtebeker Festival, boats also depart for Ralswiek.

Trips from Breege on Törnfinder

On Törnfinder you will find many trips starting in Breege, from week-long sailing trips around Rügen to crossings to Bornholm. All current offers can be found in the trip overview. An overview of trips throughout the sailing area is available under Sailing in the Baltic Sea, sailing trips along the entire German coast under Sailing in Germany. Further harbour information and the webcam are provided by the seaside resort on its Breege harbour page .

Frequently asked questions

On which Bodden is Breege harbour located?

Breege harbour lies on the northern shore of Breeger Bodden.
