Here you can read how to get from the airport to the marina, where to park and shop, what wind to expect, which sailing destinations lie off Kos and what skippers should know about berthing and formalities.

The essentials at a glance

From Kos airport near Antimachia to the marina takes about half an hour by taxi. The bus only goes as far as Kos town.

Kos Marina is the island's yacht harbour. Ferries, on the other hand, berth at Mandraki town harbour, about 1.5 kilometres further west.

The marina has its own car park and small shops for everyday needs; the old town is within walking distance.

In summer the Meltemi blows from northerly directions, usually strongest at midday and lighter at night.

Pserimos and Kalymnos lie just 9 to 16 nautical miles away and are ideal for the first leg.

Where is Kos Marina?

The map shows Kos Marina on the eastern edge of Kos town, on Georgiou Papandreou coastal road. It's about 1.4 kilometres as the crow flies west to Mandraki town harbour and the old town, and about 22 kilometres southwest to the airport.

The marina has six pontoons and around 250 berths for yachts from 8 to 80 metres in length, plus dry storage for up to 150 boats.

For clarity: Kos town harbour is called Mandraki and lies in the centre of town. That's where the ferries from Piraeus and the catamarans to neighbouring islands berth; there are also around 100 further berths for yachts there. The Knights' castle stands at the entrance to the town harbour. This article is about Kos Marina; most information on getting there and going ashore, however, applies to both harbours.

Arriving for trip departure at Kos Marina

From the airport to the marina a taxi is most convenient; the bus is cheaper but terminates in the town. If you arrive by ferry, you'll dock at Mandraki town harbour.

From Kos airport to the marina

Kos "Hippokrates" Airport lies near Antimachia in the centre of the island, approximately 23.5 kilometres from Kos town. From May to October there are daily flights from many European cities; year-round connections to Athens operate, up to three times a day in summer. The flight from Athens takes about 35 minutes.

By taxi you'll reach the marina in about half an hour. Tell the driver "Kos Marina" so they don't drop you at the town harbour. You can book a taxi through the taxi centre on +30 22420 22777 or +30 22420 23333.

The bus run by the intercity line KTEL Kos is cheaper. The bus stop is about 50 metres in front of the terminal; you buy your ticket from the driver. The journey into town costs 4 euros (as of October 2026). The timetable changes with the season. In the off-season only a few buses run on weekdays, often none on Sundays. The bus stops at the central stop on Kleopatras Street. From there it's still about two kilometres to the marina; with luggage it's better to take a taxi.

By bus, taxi or ferry

Daily ferries run to Kos from Piraeus, the port of Athens. Catamarans connect Kos daily with Rhodes, Kalymnos, Leros, Patmos, Leipsoi and Symi, more frequently in spring and summer than in winter. All ferries dock at Mandraki town harbour. From there you can walk along the waterfront promenade eastwards to the marina, about 1.5 kilometres, or take a taxi. Taxis wait on the waterfront road Akti Kountouriotou by the town harbour.

Town buses run within the town and to the suburbs, for example to Psalidi, Agios Fokas and Platani. There are many car, scooter and bicycle hire outlets on the island.

Parking

Kos Marina has its own car park. The site is guarded round the clock.

Showers and sanitary facilities

The marina has showers, toilet facilities and a laundry.

Shopping for the trip

For initial supplies there are small shops for daily needs in the marina, a chandlery, and cafés and bars. For larger shopping, Kos town with its shops is about 1.5 kilometres to the west, on foot along the waterfront road or a few minutes by taxi.

Hospital and emergency numbers

The island hospital, the General Hospital and Health Centre Kos, can be reached on +30 22420 54200 or +30 22420 22126. In urgent cases the Greek emergency numbers apply:

112: European emergency number for police, ambulance and fire brigade

166: Emergency services, 100: Police, 199: Fire brigade

108: Coast Guard, also for emergencies at sea; at sea also VHF channel 16

Tourist Police Kos: +30 22420 26666

Kos Marina at a glance

Kos Marina has berths on mooring lines with electricity and water, up to 5 metres draught and its own shipyard area. WiFi is partly free, partly available as a prepaid access.

What wind should you expect on Kos?

From roughly mid-May to mid-September the Meltemi dominates the sailing weather around Kos. This strong, dry wind comes from northerly directions. The marina is located on the northeast coast of Kos and is therefore exposed to the Meltemi.

On normal Meltemi days the wind picks up during the morning, is strongest around midday and drops off at night. Early starts are therefore often calmer. During stronger outbreaks, however, the Meltemi blows continuously over one or several days, even at night, and can reach gale force.

Which sailing destinations can you reach from the Kos Marina?

From the Kos Marina several islands of the Dodecanese and the Turkish coast lie within a day's sail. A classic first leg is a short hop to Pserimos, around 9 nautical miles, or to Kalymnos, around 16 nautical miles. These are rounded distances over water on the usual course; the chart applies for precise planning.

Pserimos is a small island between Kos and Kalymnos. On the way there you sail past the town of Kos westwards.

Kalymnos lies northwest of Kos; the main town and harbour is Pothia, a colourful hillside town with captains' houses and old sponge divers' dwellings. The island is known for its sponge diving tradition and as a climbing area.

Leros you reach by sailing north along the east side of Kalymnos, around 27 nautical miles, a long day's sail.

Nisyros lies south of Kos. From the marina you sail around the eastern tip of Kos and then south-southwest, a total of around 22 nautical miles. Nisyros is a volcanic island with a well-preserved caldera four kilometres in diameter; the Stefanos crater is one of the largest hydrothermal craters in the world.

Bodrum on the Turkish coast lies only around 10 nautical miles north of the marina. Turkey is neither in the EU nor in the Schengen Area. Anyone sailing across therefore crosses an external border, and border controls apply on both sides.

What can you do on a harbour day in Kos?

You can reach the Old Town with its castle, ancient excavations and waterfront promenade on foot from the marina. For destinations further afield take a bicycle, scooter or taxi.

Knights' Castle (Neratzia): The castle at the entrance to the town harbour was built by the Knights of St John between 1436 and 1514. You reach it via the stone arched bridge on the Palm Tree Avenue, Odos Phoinikon.

Plane Tree of Hippocrates: The square with the famous plane tree is right by the bridge to the castle.

Ancient Agora, Roman Odeon and Casa Romana: The excavations lie in the centre of town, around 1.5 to 2 kilometres from the marina.

Asklepieion: The ancient sanctuary of Asclepius, god of healing, where Hippocrates is said to have taught medicine, lies around 3.4 kilometres outside town. It is easily reached by car, scooter or bicycle, and there is a free car park.

Psalidi and Agios Fokas: In the Psalidi district east of the marina there are pebble beaches with Blue Flag status, tavernas and watersports. A cycle path leads there from the town, around four kilometres. In the Psalidi wetlands flamingos, herons and ducks rest during migration. Further east, around eight kilometres from town, lies the pebble beach of Agios Fokas; about three kilometres beyond that are the hot springs of Therma.

For skippers: Berthing, formalities and weather in the Kos Marina

At the Kos Marina you call ahead on VHF channel 77 before entering and make fast to mooring lines. Channel 16 is the distress and calling channel; for the marina itself you use channel 77.

Registration and Berthing

The berths at the six pontoons are equipped with mooring lines; large yachts lie alongside at sheltered berths. Electricity is available at 220 and 380 volts at 16 to 250 amperes. You can also reach the marina by telephone on +30 22420 44150 or by email at info@kosmarina.gr.

The contact for formalities is the Kos Port Authority, reachable on +30 22420 26594 or +30 22420 26595.

Formalities in Greece

For recreational craft over seven metres in Greek waters the monthly yacht tax TEPAI (Greek ΤΕΠΑΗ) is payable. For commercial yachts the owner or operator must pay; for private boats the owner, keeper or user. The rates are 16 to 33 euros per month for boats up to 12 metres, above that 8 euros per metre length per month, paid in advance via the Greek tax authority AADE platform (as at October 2026). The details are set out in the AADE FAQ on TEPAI (in Greek).

For private yachts over seven metres flying non-EU flags or with owners resident outside the EU, the Transit Log also applies, an accompanying document from Greek Customs. First you report arrival at the first Greek port to the Port Authority, then the Transit Log is applied for online via the AADE.

Which marine weather forecast applies around Kos?

The authoritative sea weather forecast is issued by the Greek Meteorological Service EMY (English HNMS). You can receive it via Greek coastal radio on VHF, via NAVTEX and on the Meteorological Service website.

The coastal radio stations broadcast weather reports for shipping in Greek and English. For NAVTEX, the automatic reception of weather and warning messages on board, Greece operates transmitters on Limnos, Crete and Corfu; gale warnings go out immediately upon issue. On Meltemi days it is worth checking the report before every passage, especially before legs heading north into the wind.

Trips from Kos on Törnfinder

In October 2026 there are 13 sailing trip dates on Törnfinder in the next twelve months departing from or arriving at Kos Marina. Most start in October, May and September, typically 8 days.

An overview of offers throughout the country can be found under Sailing in Greece, trips in the wider island world under Sailing in the Aegean.
