Yachts berth here in two marinas, the Marina du Château and the Marina du Moulin Blanc. Here you can read how to get to your trip start in Brest, which marina is where, where you park and shop, what weather and tide to expect, which destinations are nearby and what skippers need to know when entering and leaving.

The essentials at a glance

Brest Bretagne Airport lies northeast of the city. You can get to the centre with a bus and tram for a single ticket.

Both marinas have car parks. From Marina du Château you can walk to the supermarkets in the city centre; from Marina du Moulin Blanc you go shopping by car or bike.

From Brest railway station you can walk to the Marina du Château, while the Marina du Moulin Blanc is reached by tram and bus line 3. The fastest trains from Paris take about three and a half hours.

Brest is a tidal sailing area with a large tidal range; in the Goulet between Rade and Atlantic the current runs strongly.

The wind mostly comes from southwest or northeast; in winter Atlantic lows with gales pass through.

Which marinas are there in Brest?

In Brest yachts berth in two places: at Marina du Château, directly below the castle at the mouth of the Penfeld and near the city centre, and at Marina du Moulin Blanc, just under five kilometres further east at the mouth of the Elorn. In between lies the commercial harbour. Both marinas are operated by the municipal company Brest en vue, and both can be approached day and night in any weather.

Marina du Château is the smaller one and lies in a sheltered basin with floating pontoons. Marina du Moulin Blanc with 1,460 berths is more than twice as large and has a north basin and a south basin.

Arriving for trip departure in Brest

For getting to the boat, what matters most is whether it's in the Marina du Château at the edge of the city centre or in the Marina du Moulin Blanc in the east of the city.

From Brest Bretagne Airport to the marinas

Brest Bretagne Airport (BES) is in Guipavas northeast of the city, roughly six kilometres as the crow flies from Marina du Moulin Blanc and a good nine kilometres from Marina du Château. By car you'll reach Marina du Moulin Blanc in about a quarter of an hour. With luggage, a taxi to either marina is the most convenient option.

The cheaper option is bus line 20 of the city's Bibus network. It runs from the airport to the Porte de Gouesnou station, where you change to tram line A towards Porte de Plouzané and ride to Liberté in the city centre. A ticket costs €1.70 and is valid for one hour across the whole network, so for both bus and tram (as at October 2026). Line 20 takes about ten minutes to reach Porte de Gouesnou. As things stand (November 2026), it runs from about 5 am to 11:30 pm every 30 to 60 minutes, adjusted to flight times. During peak hours it runs regularly, otherwise as an on-demand bus that you book by telephone in advance; this also applies to the last bus in the evening and some weekend services. From the driver you can buy a day ticket for €4.50 as well as a single ticket. Departures do not wait for delayed flights. You can find timetables and the number for the on-demand bus on the airport's website.

To reach the Marina du Château, stay on the tram for two more stops, via Siam to the Château station by the castle. From Liberté it is a walk of just over a kilometre as the crow flies through the city centre. Bus line 16 runs without a change from the airport via the Place de la Liberté to the railway station (Kennedy Gares stop) and the bus station. As things stand (November 2026), it runs from about 6 am to 12:30 am, every 15 minutes during peak hours from Monday to Friday.

By train or coach

The fastest trains from Paris Montparnasse to Brest take 3 hours and 26 minutes, and most services run without a change. Brest railway station is just over a kilometre from the Marina du Château as the crow flies, and just under four kilometres from the Marina du Moulin Blanc. Since February 2026, tram line B has also run from the station and connects with line A in the centre. To get to the Marina du Moulin Blanc, take bus line 3 to the Port de Plaisance stop on the Rue Eugène Bérest, right by the marina. From the station, you take the tram to Liberté and change there to line 3; it also connects with line A at the Octroi station. As things stand (November 2026), line 3 runs from 6 am to 12:30 am, every 10 to 12 minutes during peak hours.

Marina du Château or Marina du Moulin Blanc?

The two marinas lie at opposite ends of the city. So give the taxi driver the full name, “Marina du Château” or “Marina du Moulin Blanc”. You reach the Marina du Château via the Quai Éric Tabarly, and the Marina du Moulin Blanc via the Rue Eugène Bérest in the east, right next to Océanopolis.

Parking

At Marina du Château there is parking on Quai Éric Tabarly. At Marina du Moulin Blanc the "Parking Plaisance" car park is directly at the harbour on Rue Eugène Bérest. If it's full, you'll find further spaces on Chemin de la Grève, around 600 metres as the crow flies from the marina.

Showers and sanitary facilities

Both marinas have sanitary facilities with showers and a launderette. Both are accessible for wheelchairs; at Marina du Moulin Blanc a pontoon for wheelchair users leads to the berths.

Shopping for the trip

From Marina du Château you can walk to the nearest supermarkets in the city centre: Carrefour and Biocoop are around 800 metres as the crow flies, and Monoprix on Rue de Siam around 900 metres. For a larger shop you can drive to E.Leclerc, roughly 1.5 kilometres as the crow flies.

At Marina du Moulin Blanc there is no supermarket within a kilometre radius. For shopping you drive or cycle to the E.Leclerc shopping centre, around 1.8 kilometres as the crow flies. Both marinas hire out bicycles.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

At Marina du Château the nearest pharmacy is Pharmacie des Arcades on Rue de Siam, around 850 metres as the crow flies. A medical practice, Cabinet Médical de la Rade on Rue Amiral Nielly, is around 700 metres away. At Marina du Moulin Blanc, Pharmacie du Moulin Blanc on Rue du Costour is the nearest pharmacy, around 1.2 kilometres as the crow flies.

In France you reach emergency services, police and fire brigade free of charge on these numbers:

112: European emergency number, from landlines and mobiles

15: medical emergency (SAMU), 17: police, 18: fire brigade

196: sea rescue when calling from the coast. At sea you call on VHF channel 16.

Comparing the marinas in Brest

Feature

Marina du Château

Marina du Moulin Blanc

Location

at the edge of the city centre, below the castle

east of the city, at the mouth of the Elorn

Berths

700

1.460

Water depth

7 m at the outer breakwaters

north basin 0.4 to 3.6 m, south basin 2.9 to 4.3 m

Entrance

47 m wide

60 m wide

VHF channel

9

9

Fuel

at the western end of the visitors' pontoon

Diesel and petrol at the visitors' pontoon in the north basin

Travellift

25 t

40 t and 50 t

Phone

+33 2 98 33 12 50

+33 2 98 02 20 02

Where is Marina du Château?

Marina du Château is situated west of the commercial harbour at the mouth of the Penfeld, directly beneath the castle. The basin is protected by breakwaters, and the berths are on floating pontoons. The naval harbour begins right next door, with the commercial harbour adjoining to the east.

Facilities at Marina du Château

Of the 700 berths, 140 are reserved for visitors. Electricity, water and Wi-Fi are available at the pontoons. At the fuel station at the western end of the visitors' pontoon, you can refuel around the clock using a bank card. A 25-tonne travel lift lifts boats out of the water.

Where is Marina du Moulin Blanc?

Marina du Moulin Blanc is situated in the Anse du Moulin Blanc at the mouth of the Elorn, about three nautical miles east-north-east of the commercial harbour. A breakwater protects against south-westerly winds, and floating breakwaters against easterlies. The harbour office stands on the Digue Florence Arthaud. The marine aquarium Océanopolis and the sandy Plage du Moulin Blanc are right next to the marina.

Facilities at Marina du Moulin Blanc

120 of the 1,460 berths are reserved for visitors. The pontoons have electricity and water, and Wi-Fi is free. You can refuel with diesel and petrol at the visitors' pontoon in the north basin; outside office hours, round the clock with a bank card. Travel lifts for 40 and 50 tonnes are available for work on your boat. The marina is guarded at night.

What's the sailing weather like in Brest?

In Brittany the wind often blows strongly, usually from the south-west or north-east. In winter, low-pressure systems from the Atlantic bring westerly winds and gales. The French weather service Météo-France issues warnings for coastal waters whenever winds of force 7 Beaufort or above are observed or expected.

At spring tides the difference between high and low water is six to seven metres; at neap tides just over two metres. The water of the entire Rade flows in and out through the narrow Goulet, so the tidal stream runs particularly strongly there. The times of high and low water for Brest are calculated by the French hydrographic service SHOM.

Which cruising destinations are near Brest?

From Brest you can reach the Crozon peninsula, the bay of Douarnenez, the islands of Ouessant and Molène, and the Aber Wrac'h on the north coast, all in a day's sail. The distances are rounded distances over water on the usual course from Marina du Château; for precise planning consult the chart. From Marina du Moulin Blanc add about 3 nautical miles.

Camaret-sur-Mer: about 9 nm

Molène: about 21 nm

Morgat: about 23 nm

Ouessant (Lampaul): about 28 nm

Douarnenez: about 29 nm

L'Aber Wrac'h: about 37 nm

Isles of Scilly (St Mary's): about 130 nm

Camaret-sur-Mer lies just beyond the Goulet on the Crozon peninsula and is the shortest passage. The harbour has 450 berths, 150 of them for visitors, and is well sheltered except in winds from the east and south-east. At the harbour stands the Tour Vauban, a fortified tower that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

Morgat is reached by rounding Pointe de Pen-Hir and Cap de la Chèvre, and you approach the harbour from the south. In some weather conditions there is swell in the harbour. Further south-east lies Douarnenez, the town of three harbours: Tréboul for deep-draught vessels, Port-Rhu as a basin behind a lock that is usually open two hours before to two hours after high water, and the fishing harbour Rosmeur.

Ouessant lies about 13 nautical miles offshore, is eight kilometres long and has two harbours, Lampaul in the south-west and Le Stiff in the east. Molène lies halfway there.

L'Aber Wrac'h you reach heading north through the Chenal du Four. The river mouth is a large, well-sheltered natural harbour with visitor berths on the pontoons and on moorings. In heavy swell and bad weather from west to northwest the approach is not recommended.

The Isles of Scilly off Cornwall are a destination for an overnight passage. They belong to Great Britain and therefore are not in the EU. You report your arrival via the UK Border Force's online service sPCR. As soon as you reach British territorial waters (12 nautical miles from the coast), you fly the yellow Q flag; the crew may not go ashore until after the entry clearance.

What can you do on a harbour day in Brest?

From the Marina du Château you're just a few minutes from the castle and the town centre; from the Marina du Moulin Blanc you're within walking distance of Océanopolis and the beach.

Castle and Musée national de la Marine: The castle above the Marina du Château looks back on some 1,700 years of history and is one of the few old buildings that have survived in Brest. The maritime museum inside shows the history of the arsenal and the fleet with ship models, paintings and a midget submarine. From April to September it is open daily from 10 am to 6:30 pm, and from October to March daily except Tuesdays from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm; last admission is one hour before closing. It is closed from 4 January to 5 February 2027. From 1st July to 31st August it's lifeguarded daily from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.; there are showers and drinking water.

For skippers: Berthing and sea weather in Brest

You can reach both marinas on VHF channel 9; for everyone, the route into the Rade leads through the Goulet.

Registration and Berthing

At the Marina du Château you berth in the sheltered basin at floating pontoons, depending on space at a finger berth or alongside. The harbour office is staffed daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from 1st June to 15th September.

At the Marina du Moulin Blanc the visitor pontoon with the fuel berth is in the north basin. The harbour office is staffed in season from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; out of season from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. From 1st November to 31st March it remains closed on Sundays and public holidays. In the north basin depths range from 0.4 to 3.6 metres; in the south basin from 2.9 to 4.3 metres. How much water you actually have under your keel depends on the tidal state; deep-draught yachts will find more water in the south basin.

Harbour rules

Next to the Marina du Château lies the naval harbour. You may not enter the military protection basin (Rade-abri) or the Penfeld. Commercial and naval vessels operate in the fairway; when the Navy is moving, access may be closed by light signals.

Approach

Approaching from seaward you enter the Rade through the Goulet. To reach the Marina du Château you then follow for about two nautical miles the breakwater that protects the naval harbour, pass the entrance to the Rade-abri and after another half nautical mile reach the entrance at the end of the concrete mole beneath the castle. The mole heads carry a red and a green light.

To the Marina du Moulin Blanc you continue eastwards as far as the Moulin Blanc buoy and then follow the lit channel markers to the entrance.

Traffic separation scheme off Ouessant

To the west of Ouessant lies one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, averaging around 120 ships a day. It's monitored by the maritime rescue coordination centre CROSS Corsen at the Pointe de Corsen. Anyone sailing to the Scillys or across the English Channel crosses the traffic separation scheme in accordance with the collision regulations, ideally at right angles to the traffic flow.

Which sea weather forecast applies in Brest?

The authoritative forecast is the sea weather report from Météo-France. Brest lies in the coastal area "Du cap de la Hague à la pointe de Penmarc'h"; the coastal report is valid to 20 nautical miles offshore.

Over VHF, CROSS Corsen broadcasts the weather reports several times daily on channel 79. For the Brest area, the stations Le Stiff on Ouessant and Pointe du Raz transmit. The broadcast times are listed in the Marine weather guide from Météo-France.

Trips from Brest on Törnfinder

In October 2026 there are 11 trip dates on Törnfinder in the next twelve months with departure or destination Brest. Most start in April, June and May; typically they are 12 days long.

You can find an overview of offers on all French coasts at Sailing in France, all offers at Trips.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Brest airport to the marina?

Most conveniently by taxi; to the Marina du Moulin Blanc it's about 15 minutes by car. For less money you can take bus line 20 to Porte de Gouesnou and continue on tram line A into the centre. A ticket for €1.70 is valid for one hour for the entire journey.

Which marina is closer to the town centre?

The Marina du Château. It's on the edge of the centre, a good kilometre from the station as the crow flies. The Marina du Moulin Blanc is in the east of the town.

Where do I park at the trip start in Brest?

At the Marina du Château you park on Quai Éric Tabarly, at the Marina du Moulin Blanc in the "Parking Plaisance" car park directly at the harbour. There are further spaces on Chemin de la Grève, around 600 metres away.

Are there showers at the marinas in Brest?

Yes, both marinas have sanitary facilities with showers and a laundry.

What is the tidal range in Brest?

At spring tide there are six to seven metres between high and low water, at neap tide a good two metres. The tidal stream in the Goulet therefore runs strongly.

Which VHF channel applies in the marinas of Brest?

Channel 9, for the Marina du Château and the Marina du Moulin Blanc. Distress calls at sea go via Channel 16 to CROSS Corsen.

How far is it from Brest to Camaret-sur-Mer?

Around 9 nautical miles from the Marina du Château, through the Goulet and along the Crozon peninsula.
