Here you can read how to reach the harbours in Gothenburg at the start of your trip, which harbour is where, where to park and shop, what sailing weather to expect, which sailing destinations are nearby and what skippers should bear in mind when mooring.

The essentials at a glance

Landvetter Airport is about 20 kilometres east of the city. The airport bus departs directly in front of the terminal and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to Nils Ericson Terminalen bus station in the centre.

The marina Lilla Bommen lies right in the city beside the opera house, the marina Långedrag in the west at the river mouth, close to the ferries into the skerries.

For the duration of a trip you can park in the Nordstan car park about 300 metres from Lilla Bommen, which is open round the clock. In Långedrag there are parking spaces on Talattagatan and at Vikebacken.

Lilla Bommen is open year-round, the harbour office is staffed from May to September. The visitor area in Långedrag is closed from 1 November to 30 April.

The wind on the west coast usually blows from west to southwest, tides are small. On sunny summer days a sea breeze picks up in the afternoon.

What harbours are there in Gothenburg?

In Gothenburg, visiting yachts berth mainly in two places: in the Lilla Bommen guest harbour in the city centre on the south bank of the Göta älv, directly next to the Opera House, and in the Långedrag guest harbour of the GKSS sailing club, a good eight kilometres further west on the south bank of the river mouth. From Lilla Bommen you walk downstream under the Älvsborgsbron until the river opens out to the sea and the skerries at Långedrag.

Lilla Bommen has around 100 berths and is open all year round, 24 hours a day. The Långedrag guest harbour belongs to the marina of the Gothenburg Royal Sailing Club with more than 530 berths behind a stone breakwater; available visitor berths are marked in green. A small guest facility, the Göteborg City Marina, is located on Ringön on the north bank. Also on the north bank, the municipal port operator Grefab runs two harbours with permanent berths at Eriksberg and Lindholmen.

Getting to Gothenburg for the start of your trip

You can get to Gothenburg by air, by train, by car or by ferry. Lilla Bommen is so central that you can walk from the railway station and the bus station. To Långedrag you take the tram or a taxi.

From Landvetter airport to the harbours

Gothenburg Landvetter airport is about 20 kilometres east of the centre. You have two options to get into the centre:

Airport bus: It stops right in front of the terminal and runs via Korsvägen to the Nils Ericson Terminalen bus station at the main railway station, taking about 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. It's best to buy tickets in advance online or in the app, as this is not always possible on board. From Nils Ericson Terminalen you walk about one kilometre to the Opera House and the Lilla Bommen guest harbour.

Taxi: Follow the signs to the authorised taxis at the terminal. If a fixed price applies, it must be shown in the taximeter before the journey. Within the zone designated by the airport, a maximum price of 725 kronor applies for up to four people.

To Långedrag, the easiest way from the airport is by taxi. By bus and train you first go into the centre and then take tram line 11 towards Saltholmen (in summer also line 9) to Långedrag stop. From there you walk about 600 metres to the guest harbour.

By car, train or ferry

By train you can reach Gothenburg from Oslo in just under four hours, from Stockholm and Copenhagen in about three and a half hours. The main railway station is about one kilometre from Lilla Bommen.

From Denmark a ferry runs from Frederikshavn to Gothenburg; its terminal is at Masthuggstorget near the centre. The ferry from Kiel berths further out in the harbour at Klippan; the terminal is well connected to buses and trams.

By car you can reach Gothenburg via the European routes E6, E20 and E45. Swedish roads are toll-free, but in Gothenburg a congestion charge applies on weekdays, except in July.

If your boat is on the north bank at Lindholmen or Eriksberg, take the river ferry: line 285 runs from Stenpiren in the city centre via Lindholmspiren and Eriksberg to Klippan. The normal public transport ticket is valid.

Which harbour is mine?

Which harbour and which pontoon it is will be stated in your trip documents. The two guest harbours are far apart: Lilla Bommen in the city centre at the Opera House, Långedrag out at the river mouth in the Västra Frölunda district. Therefore tell the taxi driver either "Göteborgs Gästhamn, Lilla Bommen" or "GKSS Långedrag, Talattagatan 12".

Parking

The Nordstan car park is about 300 metres from Lilla Bommen. It is open daily, 24 hours a day, and costs 30 kronor per hour or part thereof during the day, but no more than 199 kronor per day (as of October 2026). Additional parking is available on Gullbergs Strandgata, about 500 metres from the harbour.

In Långedrag you can park on Talattagatan, where the sailing club is also located, about 300 metres from the harbour, or at Vikebacken. In summer there are additional spaces at Hinsholmskilen. At the Saltholmen ferry landing itself there are only spaces for people with restricted mobility.

Arrived early: city centre and fish hall

If you arrive at Lilla Bommen before the crew, the city centre is right in front of you: the Nordstan shopping centre is just a few minutes' walk, and the Feskekôrka fish market hall on the moat is a good kilometre as the crow flies.

Showers and sanitary facilities

Both harbours have showers. In Lilla Bommen they are in the service building; the skipper receives the access code with the berth booking. A washing machine and dryer are in the same building and are included in the berthing fee. In Långedrag there are showers and a sauna in the club's changing rooms; you book the washing machine and dryer at the harbour office.

Shopping for the trip

From Lilla Bommen it's about 300 metres to the Nordstan shopping centre with many shops and about 400 metres to the Hemköp supermarket at Nordstadstorget.

From Långedrag marina you walk about one and a half kilometres to the Coop at Käringberget on Långedragsvägen. Larger is the Willys in Påvelund on Traneredsvägen, about 1.7 kilometres from the harbour, which you can easily reach by car. About two kilometres away there is also a Hemköp on Redegatan.

Wine, spirits and beer over 3.5 per cent are sold in Sweden only by the state monopoly Systembolaget, and only to those aged 20 and over. In the supermarket you can only get light beer up to 3.5 per cent.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

From Lilla Bommen it's about 500 metres to the nearest pharmacies in Kanaltorgsgatan and Köpmansgatan. You'll find doctors' surgeries in Frihamnen on the other side of the river, about 800 metres as the crow flies. The nearest hospital, Capio Lundby on Hjalmar Brantingsgatan, is about two kilometres away.

From Långedrag marina you can reach the nearest pharmacy on Långedragsvägen near Nya Varvet after just over a kilometre. The nearest doctor's surgery is Nya Varvets Läkarmottagning on Wirséns Väg, about three kilometres away.

For non-urgent health queries you can reach health advice on 1177, which will also tell you the nearest surgery. From abroad dial +46 771 1177 00.

112: Emergency number for ambulance, police and fire brigade, also for sea rescue

114 14: Police for non-urgent matters

1177: Health advice

At sea: VHF channel 16, where you reach the Swedish sea rescue coordination centre Sweden Rescue

The harbours in Gothenburg at a glance

Lilla Bommen is the harbour for starting a trip right in the city centre, Långedrag lies closer to the archipelago and is closed in winter.

Feature

Lilla Bommen guest harbour

Långedrag guest harbour

Location

City centre, south bank of the Göta älv next to the opera house

Långedrag, south bank of the river mouth, about 8 km west

Operator

Göteborgs Gästhamn

Sailing club GKSS

Berths

about 100

more than 530, free berths marked in green

berthing

at pontoons, berths can be booked online

at fixed wooden pontoons, stern-to on piles; water depth 3 m

Facilities

Power, water, showers, washing machine and tumble dryer

Electricity, water, showers, sauna, washing machine and dryer

Open

year-round, harbour office staffed May to September

Guest area 1 May to 31 October, staffed 1 June to 31 August

Phone

+46 31 12 66 77

+46 31 69 68 31

Where is Lilla Bommen marina in Gothenburg?

Lilla Bommen marina lies right in the centre of Gothenburg on the south bank of the Göta älv, directly next to the opera house and west of Hisingsbron. You can reach the central station and Nils Ericson Terminalen bus station in about one kilometre on foot, and it's only a few minutes to the Nordstan shopping centre. Coming from the sea you pass under Älvsborgsbron and up the river into the harbour.

Facilities at Lilla Bommen marina

The harbour has about 100 berths. Water is available at all pontoons, electricity at all berths. Showers, washing machine and dryer are in the service building; you dispose of rubbish and recyclables behind the service building using the same code as for the showers. There is no fuel station in the harbour; the nearest boat fuel stations are on Donsö and Styrsö in the southern archipelago.

Where is Långedrag marina in Gothenburg?

Långedrag marina lies in the west of the city in the Västra Frölunda district, where the river mouth opens to the sea and the archipelago. A stone breakwater protects the basin against most wind directions. The tram stop Långedrag is about 600 metres to the east on Saltholmsgatan; it's about a 20-minute walk to the Saltholmen ferry terminal.

Facilities at Långedrag marina

The marina of sailing club GKSS has more than 530 berths on fixed wooden pontoons, free guest berths are marked in green. The water depth in the harbour is 3 metres. Electricity and water are available at all berths, showers and a sauna in the club's changing rooms, washing machine and tumble dryer can be booked at the harbour office. Right next to the harbour is the restaurant Långedrags Värdshus.

What is the weather like in Gothenburg for sailing?

On the Swedish west coast the wind blows most frequently from west to southwest throughout the year. In cold winters there are also long spells with north and northeast winds. On sunny summer days a sea breeze picks up in the afternoon, usually at 5 to 7 metres per second, dying down again in the evening.

Tides are small: about every six hours the water rises or falls by a few decimetres. The wind has a stronger effect: strong west and southwest winds push water from the North Sea into the Skagerrak and Kattegat and raise the water level rapidly. In spring, fog forms easily along the coast when warm, moist air moves over the still cold sea. The Swedish weather service SMHI issues gale warnings for wind at sea from 14 metres per second (force 7).

Which sailing destinations lie near Gothenburg?

Off Gothenburg lie the islands of the southern archipelago to the south, the Bohuslän coast to the north, and across the Kattegat you can reach Denmark. Distances are rounded distances over water on the usual course from the river mouth at Långedrag; from Lilla Bommen add around 5 nm. For precise planning the chart applies.

Styrsö: around 5 nm to the south. Commercial vessels are required to report, pleasure craft as a rule are not. If you have a radio on board, you still monitor channel 13 in the traffic area. In summer many pleasure craft are under way; separate channels are set up for small vessels. Watch out for ferries, container ships and tankers turning, arriving and departing in the harbour.

On the way to Lilla Bommen you pass under the Älvsborgsbron with 45 metres clearance. The Hisingsbron lies upriver east of Lilla Bommen; you do not need to pass it for the guest harbour. Those going further upriver: when closed it has 12 metres clearance; for pleasure craft it opens at fixed times, and you request the opening on VHF channel 9. The Bridge opening times published by the City of Gothenburg.

You reach the Långedrag marina directly from seaward, without having to sail up the river. The entrance leads behind the stone breakwater; the harbour has a depth of 3 metres.

Which marine weather forecast applies in Gothenburg?

The official marine weather forecasts and warnings for Sweden are issued by the meteorological service SMHI. Gothenburg lies in the coastal section Nidingen–Måseskär, which covers the Kattegat and the southernmost part of the Skagerrak. SMHI explains the coastal sections and sea areas on its website, as well as the warning levels for wind at sea.

Navigational warnings are broadcast by the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) via VHF and NAVTEX. Urgent warnings are transmitted immediately and repeated every four hours; routine warnings are included in the regular broadcasts every four hours.

Trips departing from Gothenburg on Törnfinder

In October 2026 there are 9 sailing trip dates on Törnfinder over the next twelve months with Gothenburg as departure or destination. Most depart in August, July and June; typically they last 8 days.

Trips along the entire Swedish coast can be found under Sailing in Sweden, all sailing areas in the trip overview.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Landvetter Airport to the Lilla Bommen marina?

The easiest way is by airport coach to Nils Ericson Terminalen, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
