Yachts berth here in Marina del Nettuno in the harbour and in two marinas on the waterfront promenade below the castle. Here you can read how to reach trip start in Milazzo, where the three harbours are, where to park and shop, what wind to expect, which islands you can reach from here and what skippers should know when entering.

The essentials at a glance

Direct buses run from Catania Airport to Milazzo harbour; the journey takes around two hours. From the railway station, city bus routes 004 and 005 take you to the harbour.

Car parks are 100 to 200 metres from Marina del Nettuno and around 300 metres from Marina Poseidon. You can reach supermarkets on foot from all three marinas, in 400 metres to around a kilometre.

Vulcano lies around 20 nautical miles away, Lipari around 22. You can reach both islands on the first day's passage.

The peninsula shelters the east side of Milazzo from westerly winds. With wind from northeast to southeast, sea state runs into the gulf.

What harbours are there in Milazzo?

In Milazzo yachts berth at three locations: in the Marina del Nettuno in the harbour at Molo Marullo, in the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore roughly 850 metres further north along the waterfront promenade Marina Garibaldi, and in the Marina Poseidon just under half a kilometre further north, towards Vaccarella. All three lie on the eastern side of the peninsula and look out onto the Gulf of Milazzo.

The Marina del Nettuno is the only one of the three inside the harbour basin, which it shares with ferries and hydrofoils. The other two marinas lie with their pontoons directly in front of the promenade, below the castle.

Feature

Marina del Nettuno

Marina Santa Maria Maggiore

Marina Poseidon

Location

in the harbour, between Molo Marullo and Banchina Rizzo

in front of the promenade Marina Garibaldi

in front of the promenade, towards Vaccarella

Berths

around 140, plus 14 visitor berths

around 250

around 160

Arriving for your trip departure in Milazzo

There is a direct bus connection from Catania airport to the harbour. Milazzo also has a railway station.

From Catania and Reggio Calabria airports to Milazzo

Direct buses run from Catania airport to the harbour of Milazzo several times a day. The journey takes around two hours depending on traffic. The bus stops at the ferry harbour, where the Marina del Nettuno is also located. For the two marinas along the promenade, a taxi is more convenient with luggage.

By hire car you drive from the airport via the A18 motorway to Messina and there onto the A20 towards Palermo as far as Milazzo.

If you land at Reggio Calabria on the mainland, you cross the Strait of Messina by hydrofoil to Messina. From there you continue by train to Milazzo.

By car, train or bus

By car you reach Milazzo via the A20 motorway between Messina and Palermo. Trenitalia trains stop at Milazzo station. You can reach platform 1 step-free; lifts serve the other platforms (6 a.m. to 10 p.m.). To the harbour you take the town bus. From the station, routes 004 and 005 run towards the harbour: the 004 stops at Molo Marullo, the 005 in Via Ciantro. From both stops it is around three minutes' walk to the harbour.

Which marina is mine?

Pay attention to the full name. The Marina del Nettuno is in the harbour next to the ferry berths, where the bus and taxis also stop. The Marina Santa Maria Maggiore and the Marina Poseidon lie outside the harbour along the promenade below the castle. So tell the taxi driver "Marina del Nettuno, Molo Marullo", "Marina Santa Maria Maggiore" or "Marina Poseidon", not just "Porto". Otherwise you will end up at the ferry terminal and have to carry your luggage a good way along the promenade.

Parking

Because ferries to the Aeolian Islands depart from Milazzo, there are car parks near the harbour where cars can be left for several days. At the Marina del Nettuno you park in Via Ammiraglio Luigi Rizzo, around 100 metres away, or in Via dei Mille, around 200 metres away. From the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore it is around 800 metres to the car park in Via Ammiraglio Luigi Rizzo. From the Marina Poseidon the car park in Via Nino Scolaro is around 300 metres away.

Arrived early: promenade and castle

If you still have time before your trip starts, from any marina you are immediately at the waterfront promenade Marina Garibaldi: the pontoons of the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore and the Marina Poseidon lie directly in front of it, and at the Marina del Nettuno it begins right by the harbour. Along the promenade there are cafés, ice cream parlours and shops, with the old town and the castle above.

Shopping for the trip

From the Marina del Nettuno you walk around 500 metres to the Sigma in Via Massimiliano Regis; the organic supermarket ViviAmoBio in Via Vittorio Veneto is a similar distance. From the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore it is around 400 metres to the Ard in Via Riccardo D'Amico and around 500 metres to the Conad in Via Venti Settembre. From the Marina Poseidon you reach the Ard and a Sigma in Vico 1 San Papino after around a kilometre each. You can get spare parts and technical service near the harbour.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

Near the Marina del Nettuno are the Castelli pharmacy in Via San Giovanni and the Vece pharmacy at Piazza Caio Duilio, around 200 and 250 metres away. Doctors' surgeries are around 300 metres from the harbour in Via Giorgio Rizzo and Via Venti Settembre. Along the promenade is the Caputo pharmacy, around 200 metres from the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore and around 500 metres from the Marina Poseidon. Doctors' surgeries in Via Matteo Nardi and Via Nino Ryolo are around 400 metres from the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore.

The hospital in Milazzo, the Ospedale Giuseppe Fogliani, is located in Contrada Villaggio Grazia. It has an accident and emergency department (Pronto Soccorso).

These numbers apply in Milazzo and at sea off the Sicilian coast:

112: single European emergency number for ambulance, fire and police services

1530: free emergency number of the Italian coastguard for emergencies at sea, available round the clock

At sea: emergency call via VHF channel 16

Where is the Marina del Nettuno?

The Marina del Nettuno lies in the harbour of Milazzo between the Molo Marullo and the Banchina Rizzo, right next to the quays where the ferries and hydrofoils to the Aeolian Islands berth. Its floating pontoons are protected by a floating concrete breakwater.

The marina has been in operation since 1998 and is right in the town centre, with the waterfront road starting directly at the harbour. In summer the basin is busy because ships to the islands are constantly coming and going.

Facilities at the Marina del Nettuno

The marina has around 140 berths plus 14 berths for visitors. It takes yachts up to 45 metres in length, with water depths of 6 to 8 metres. Water and electricity are available at the berths. There is also a fuel station, engine servicing, a yard with crane and slipway, and a bar. Marina staff assist with berthing round the clock.

Where is the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore?

The Marina Santa Maria Maggiore lies north of the harbour on the waterfront promenade Marina Garibaldi, where the church of Santa Maria Maggiore also stands. Its pontoons lie outside the harbour basin directly in front of the waterfront road, below the castle.

From the marina you step straight onto the promenade with its shops, cafés and restaurants. The old town and the castle lie above on the hill.

Facilities at the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore

With around 250 berths, the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore is the largest of the three.

Where is the Marina Poseidon?

The Marina Poseidon lies on the northern part of the promenade Marina Garibaldi, towards Vaccarella, also outside the harbour and below the castle. Of the three harbours it lies furthest from the ferry terminal.

Anyone arriving here has the promenade directly ahead. Walking towards the harbour you reach the Marina Santa Maria Maggiore and further south the ferry terminals and the bus stop at the Molo Marullo.

Facilities at the Marina Poseidon

The Marina Poseidon has around 160 berths on pontoons in front of the promenade.

What is the weather like in Milazzo for sailing?

The Capo Milazzo peninsula protects the eastern side of the town from westerly winds. The Marina del Nettuno in the harbour basin is well sheltered from winds from west to north. The coast is open to the northeast through to southeast: when the Scirocco blows from the southeast or winds come from the northeast across the gulf, swell runs towards the coast.

For the passage to the islands, what matters is that after the cape you have open water ahead. With winds from northerly directions you sail close-hauled and into the swell to the islands, whilst on the return the course becomes broader. The Italian weather service issues strong wind and gale warnings from wind force 7, meaning from 28 knots mean wind speed.

Which cruising destinations lie near Milazzo?

From Milazzo the Aeolian Islands are the obvious destination: after rounding Capo Milazzo, Vulcano and Lipari lie only a day's sail away. The seven islands are of volcanic origin and have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The distances are rounded distances over water on the usual course from the Marina del Nettuno; the chart applies for exact planning.

Vulcano, Porto di Levante: around 20 nm, round Capo Milazzo towards the northwest

Lipari, Marina Corta: around 22 nm, passing east of Vulcano

Panarea: around 27 nm to the north

Salina, Santa Marina: around 28 nm, passing between Vulcano and Lipari

Capo d'Orlando: around 28 nm westwards along the Sicilian coast

Stromboli, Scari: around 35 nm to the north

Vulcano and Lipari are the usual first leg. The Porto di Levante lies on the eastern side of Vulcano, the Marina Corta in the middle of the town of Lipari. What you can do ashore on the islands is shown in our article about Sailing and walking on the Aeolian Islands.

Stromboli is a long day's run. Off the Sciara del Fuoco, the northwestern flank of the active volcano, the coastguard in Milazzo closes a coastal strip to navigation. The width is set according to the volcano's activity. As of October 2026, it is two nautical miles off the coast between Punta delle Chiappe and Punta Labronzo.

Capo Milazzo you round on every leg to the islands. A marine reserve lies around the cape. As of October 2026, provisional rules set by the municipality apply there: navigation is prohibited in the core area. You may only anchor in two designated areas on sand or shingle; the number of boats is limited there. You approach the anchorage at right angles to the coast at no more than 3 knots.

Anyone wanting to continue westwards along Sicily's north coast will find the destination at the other end of the coast in the portrait of the Harbours in Palermo Through the Strait of Messina you reach the east coast; arrival there is described in our portrait of the Harbours in Catania.

What can you do ashore for a day in Milazzo?

The castle, old town and promenade are all within walking distance from all three marinas.

Castle of Milazzo: The complex above the old town, at around seven hectares, is considered the largest fortified citadel in Sicily. The town was founded in the 8th century BC by Greeks.

Marina Garibaldi promenade: The waterfront road between the harbour and Vaccarella is the evening meeting place, with the churches of San Giacomo and Santa Maria Maggiore, shops and ice cream parlours.

For skippers: Berthing and sea weather in Milazzo

You reach the Marina del Nettuno on VHF channel 9. Channel 16 is the distress and calling channel, which you monitor on approach to the harbour.

Registration and Berthing

In the Marina del Nettuno you call ahead on channel 9 when arriving. Marina staff help with mooring round the clock. The marina keeps 14 berths for guests.

Approach

Approaching from the north, you round Capo Milazzo and run south along the eastern side of the peninsula. You first pass the pontoons of Marina Poseidon and Marina Santa Maria Maggiore in front of the promenade, then reach the harbour at the Molo Marullo.

In summer, hydrofoils and ferries to the Aeolian Islands arrive and depart at short intervals. Keep clear of them in the approach and in the basin.

Which sea weather forecast applies in Milazzo?

For Italian waters, the weather service of the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare) issues the official sea weather forecast. It is updated every six hours; the coastguard broadcasts it by radio to shipping.

Storm warnings (Avviso di burrasca) appear every three hours in Italian and English, and also in between if necessary, for instance when local thunderstorms are threatening. For Milazzo, the warnings for the north and northeast coasts of Sicily apply. You will find warnings and the sea state chart on the Weather service page.

Trips from Milazzo on Törnfinder

In October 2026 there are 4 trip dates on Törnfinder in the next twelve months with Milazzo as departure or destination. Most start in July; 8 days is typical.

All current offers are in the trip overview. An overview of the whole country is given on the page Sailing in Italy; you will find trips in the wider sailing area under Sailing in the Mediterranean.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Catania airport to Milazzo?

By direct bus, which runs several times a day from the airport to the harbour of Milazzo and takes around two hours.
