For yachts there are three small harbours in the city centre: the Porticciolo del Molosiglio, the Porticciolo di Santa Lucia and the Porto di Mergellina. Here you can read how to reach the harbours in Naples from the airport and by train, metro or ferry, which harbour is where, where to shop, what wind to expect, which sailing destinations lie in the gulf, and what skippers should note when berthing and regarding sea weather.

The essentials at a glance

Naples-Capodichino Airport lies only around seven kilometres as the crow flies from Molosiglio and Santa Lucia. The Alibus airport bus runs in around 35 minutes to the Molo Beverello ferry terminal.

Molosiglio and Santa Lucia lie close together at the foot of the Palazzo Reale and Castel dell'Ovo, Mergellina further west at the end of the waterfront promenade.

Supermarkets or markets are located around 300 to 500 metres from all three harbours. Santa Lucia lies on the car-free Borgo Marinari; the final stretch is on foot across a bridge.

In summer a regular daily wind pattern dominates the sailing area: onshore by day, offshore in the evening and at night.

Procida lies around 11 nautical miles away, Capri and Ischia each around 15 to 16 nautical miles.

Which harbours are there in Naples?

In Naples yachts berth at three locations along the waterfront: in the Porticciolo del Molosiglio below the Palazzo Reale, just west of the large ferry port, in the Porticciolo di Santa Lucia around 700 metres further southwest on the Borgo Marinari beneath Castel dell'Ovo, and in the Porto di Mergellina a good two kilometres further west, where the waterfront promenade ends at the hill of Posillipo. All three are small harbours with berths belonging to clubs and private operators; the large port of Naples itself serves ferries, cruise ships and cargo vessels.

Feature

Porticciolo del Molosiglio

Porticciolo di Santa Lucia

Porto di Mergellina

Location

below the Palazzo Reale

Borgo Marinari, Castel dell’Ovo

western end of the waterfront promenade

Berths

150 at the pontoon of Circolo Canottieri Napoli

100 and 30 at two pontoon facilities, also for visitors

20 for visitors

Boat length

up to 14 m

up to 25 and 24 m respectively

under 50 m

Water depth

4 m

–

1 to 10 m

max. draught

–

3 m (larger facility)

–

Contact

by telephone

VHF 72 and 73 respectively

VHF 9

Fuel station

yes

yes, around the clock

yes

Showers

yes

yes

yes

Arriving for trip departure in Naples

Naples is easily accessible by airport, main railway station and ferry port, and all the harbours are located in the city. For the last leg, it depends on whether your trip starts in Molosiglio, Santa Lucia or Mergellina.

From Naples Airport to the harbours

Naples-Capodichino Airport is in the north-east of the city, about seven kilometres as the crow flies from Molosiglio and Santa Lucia and about nine kilometres from Mergellina. By taxi you can get directly to Molosiglio and Mergellina; for Santa Lucia, to the bridge on the Via Partenope.

The Alibus airport bus is cheaper. It stops at the main railway station at Piazza Garibaldi after about 15 minutes and continues to the port as far as Immacolatella and Molo Beverello, the jetty for the fast boats to the islands. It takes about 35 minutes to get there. You can buy tickets online or at ticket machines on the ground floor of the arrivals hall. From Molo Beverello you can walk to Porticciolo del Molosiglio; for Santa Lucia or Mergellina with luggage, a taxi or the metro is more convenient.

By car, train, metro or ferry

Long-distance and regional trains stop at Napoli Centrale main station at Piazza Garibaldi. From there, metro line 1 runs via Duomo and Università to Municipio station at the port. At Municipio station you change to line 6, which runs via Chiaia, San Pasquale and Arco Mirelli to Mergellina. At Mergellina there is also a connection to line 2.

By car you reach Naples from the north via the A1 motorway, from the south via the A3 from Salerno. Ferries and hydrofoils to the islands in the bay depart from Molo Beverello.

Which harbour is mine?

Molosiglio and Santa Lucia are close to each other, but you can only reach Santa Lucia on foot via the small bridge to Borgo Marinari. Mergellina lies much further west at the end of the seafront promenade.

Parking

Car parks and multi-storey car parks near the harbours:

Porticciolo del Molosiglio: car park on Via Ferdinando Acton, around 100 metres

Porticciolo di Santa Lucia: Galleria della Vittoria multi-storey car park, around 500 metres

Porto di Mergellina: Garage Cava on Via Mergellina, around 300 metres, and Garage Piedigrotta, around 400 metres

The Borgo Marinari is car-free. You can therefore only reach Porticciolo di Santa Lucia on foot from the coastal road via the bridge, even with luggage.

Arrived early: Borgo Marinari and seafront promenade

If you're waiting for your sailing trip to start, Borgo Marinari at Porticciolo di Santa Lucia is a good choice, around 700 metres from Molosiglio and a good two kilometres from Mergellina. Beneath the Castel dell'Ovo, restaurants line the waterfront, where traditional Neapolitan wooden boats lie alongside sailing yachts. From there the seafront promenade runs west towards Mergellina and east to the Palazzo Reale.

Showers and sanitary facilities

All three harbours have sanitary facilities with showers.

Shopping for the trip

Supermarkets and markets near the harbours:

Porticciolo del Molosiglio: Decò supermarket on Via Santa Lucia, around 300 metres

Porticciolo di Santa Lucia: Superò supermarket, around 450 metres, and Decò on Via Santa Lucia, around 500 metres

Porto di Mergellina: Mercato Torretta market on Via Ferdinando Galiani, around 500 metres, and Conad supermarket, around 1 kilometre

For fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, cheese, cold meats and bread, the Pignasecca market is worth a visit – the city's oldest market. It's located in the Quartieri Spagnoli just a few steps from Via Toledo. The stalls also sell household goods and street food such as fried pizza.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

Pharmacies near the harbours:

Porticciolo del Molosiglio: Farmacia Tedesca Ariston on Piazza Carolina, around 500 metres

Porticciolo di Santa Lucia: Farmacia Iuliano on Piazza dei Martiri, around 900 metres

Porto di Mergellina: Farmacia San Giuseppe on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, around 700 metres

A hospital with accident and emergency is the Ospedale dei Pellegrini, around 1.5 kilometres from Molosiglio and 2.1 kilometres from Santa Lucia. From Mergellina, the Ospedale Fatebenefratelli is closest at around 2.3 kilometres.

For emergencies on land and at sea, these numbers apply in Naples:

112: single European emergency number for ambulance, police and fire brigade

1530: coastguard emergency number for emergencies at sea, free of charge and available around the clock

At sea: VHF channel 16

Where is Porticciolo del Molosiglio?

Porticciolo del Molosiglio is on Via del Molosiglio below the Palazzo Reale, at the western edge of Naples' main harbour. It's only a few minutes' walk to Piazza Municipio with the Castel Nuovo and the Municipio station on metro lines 1 and 6.

You can reserve berths by telephone at the pontoon of the rowing club Circolo Canottieri Napoli.

Facilities at Molosiglio

The Circolo Canottieri Napoli pontoon has 150 berths for boats up to 14 metres with around 4 metres water depth. There is water and electricity, plus a fuel station, sanitary facilities with showers and WiFi.

Where is Porticciolo di Santa Lucia?

Porticciolo di Santa Lucia is at Borgo Marinari on the small rocky island of Megaride, which is also home to the Castel dell'Ovo. A narrow bridge connects the island to the seafront promenade on Via Partenope. According to tradition, the history of Naples begins on Megaride.

Fishermen once lived here; today the Borgo Marinari is a harbour for sailing yachts and wooden boats with restaurants right on the waterfront. Two pontoon facilities on Via Wagner and Via Eldorado allocate visitor berths.

Facilities at Santa Lucia

The larger marina has 100 berths for boats up to 25 metres and up to 3 metres draught; mooring is on mooring buoys. The smaller one has 30 berths for boats up to 24 metres; water and electricity are included in the mooring fee there, and staff assist with berthing. Both marinas have water and electricity, sanitary facilities with showers, Wi-Fi, video surveillance and access to a fuel station open 24 hours a day. The larger marina has a boatyard with two cranes of 30 tonnes each; the smaller one has a 10-tonne crane.

Where is Porto di Mergellina?

Porto di Mergellina lies at the western end of the waterfront promenade, where the Riviera di Chiaia meets the Posillipo hill. A roughly 450-metre-long breakwater protects the basin to the southeast. On the breakwater, the Molo Sannazaro, lies Marina Molo Luise, with berths for large yachts.

The harbour is privately operated. The Mergellina stations of Metro Line 6 and Line 2 are a few minutes away.

Facilities at Mergellina

Twenty berths are available for visitors; water depth ranges from 1 to 10 metres, and boats up to just under 50 metres can be accommodated. The pontoons have water and electricity at 63 and 125 amps. The harbour has a fuel station, sanitary facilities with showers, Wi-Fi, waste separation and a repair service.

What is the weather like in Naples for sailing?

In the Bay of Naples the wind usually blows from two directions: from the northeast and from the southwest, the Libeccio. In summer, when large-scale winds are light, a land–sea breeze system determines the day. During the day the wind blows from sea to land and reaches its greatest strength around midday; in the evening it veers and blows from land to sea. Around midnight is the calmest time.

Outside summer, large-scale weather systems more often determine the wind; then the Scirocco from the southeast and the Libeccio from the southwest can blow hard and gusty. The Italian weather service issues gale warnings from force 7 onwards, that is from 28 knots mean wind.

Which destinations lie near Naples?

From Naples you sail west past Posillipo to the Phlegraean Fields and the islands of Procida and Ischia, or south across the bay to Capri and Sorrento. The distances are rounded over-water distances on the usual course from Santa Lucia; for precise planning the chart applies. From Mergellina the western destinations are about one nautical mile closer.

Pozzuoli: about 8 nm

Baia: about 9 nm

Procida, Marina Grande: about 11 nm

Sorrento: about 13 nm

Ischia, Ischia Porto: about 15 nm

Capri, Marina Grande: about 16 nm

Pozzuoli and Baia

West of Naples, behind the island of Nisida, lie the Gulf of Pozzuoli and the Phlegraean Fields. Pozzuoli and Baia are short day sails, good for the first day on board. On the way there you pass the Gaiola underwater protected area off Posillipo, for which special rules apply.

Procida and Ischia

Procida and the small neighbouring island of Vivara lie at the western edge of the bay; behind them is Ischia, the largest island in the bay. The waters around both islands belong to the Regno di Nettuno marine protected area. Ischia Porto on the northeast side of the island is a full day's sail from Naples.

Capri and Sorrento

To the south the route leads across the bay. Marina Grande lies on the north side of Capri; Sorrento on the north coast of the Sorrento Peninsula. Further south on the Gulf of Salerno lies the harbour of Agropoli.

What can you do on a harbour day in Naples?

From Molosiglio and Santa Lucia you can reach the main sights on foot; to Mergellina, Metro Line 6 runs. Naples's old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.

Castel dell'Ovo and Borgo Marinari: The castle rises straight from the sea next to Porticciolo di Santa Lucia; on the small island there are also boat workshops.

Palazzo Reale and Piazza del Plebiscito: The former seat of the Spanish viceroys lies directly above Porticciolo del Molosiglio. The complex includes gardens, the National Library and the Teatro San Carlo from 1737. Channel 16 is the distress and calling channel; for the harbours themselves you use the channels of the respective operators.

Registration and Berthing

Porticciolo del Molosiglio: You reserve berths by telephone with the Circolo Canottieri Napoli.

Porticciolo di Santa Lucia: You reach the larger facility on VHF channels 16 and 72 or by telephone; you moor to moorings. At the smaller facility you report on channel 73 before entering; you can reserve by telephone or online.

Porto di Mergellina: VHF channel 9. You cannot reserve the visitors' berths.

Rules in the marine protected areas

Two protected areas lie on typical routes from Naples (as at October 2026):

Gaiola off Posillipo: In Zone A, navigation, anchoring, mooring and bathing are prohibited. In Zone B you may sail; under engine you travel only with permission and at no more than 5 knots. Anchoring is permitted only in designated areas; mooring only at laid buoys.

Regno di Nettuno around Ischia, Procida and Vivara: In Zone A all navigation is prohibited. In the other zones, under engine no more than 5 knots up to 300 metres from the coast and 10 knots up to 600 metres. Anchoring is prohibited over seagrass beds and in buoy fields; jet skis are prohibited in the entire area.

The rules are set out in the ordinances of the Italian Ministry of the Environment for Gaiola and for Regno di Nettuno.

Approach

Landmarks include Vesuvius to the east and the Castel Sant'Elmo on the hill above the city. The entrance to the large harbour is marked by the light at the head of Molo San Vincenzo. In Mergellina the head of the main mole carries a red flashing light every five seconds, the head of the inner mole a green one. Ferries and hydrofoils run close around Molo Beverello and off Mergellina; keep clear of their berths.

Which sea weather forecast applies off Naples?

The official marine weather forecast for Italian waters is issued by the Italian Air Force weather service (Aeronautica Militare). It is updated every six hours and the coastguard broadcasts it by radio.

The storm warnings (Avviso di burrasca) appear every three hours in Italian and English and also between times if required. Naples lies in the coastal section Alta Campania, which runs from the mouth of the Garigliano to Punta Licosa. You will find warnings and charts on the Weather service page.

Trips from Naples on Törnfinder

In October 2026 there are 6 trip dates on Törnfinder in the next twelve months with departure or destination Naples. Most start in May, September and April; typically 8 days.

Offers along the Italian coasts and on the islands can be found under Sailing in Italy, trips throughout the Mediterranean under Sailing in the Mediterranean.
