Here you can read how to get there for the start of your trip, where exactly the harbour is, where to park and shop, what sailing weather to expect, which fjords and islands lie nearby and what skippers should bear in mind when berthing.

The essentials at a glance

Ålesund Vigra airport is about 18 kilometres north of the town. The airport bus takes about 25 minutes to the centre.

The visitor berths are right in the town centre; it's only a few steps into the centre. Electricity, water and Wi-Fi are included in the berthing fee.

Without flying you can arrive on the coastal route mail boats, which call in daily northbound and southbound, with long-distance coaches from Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim or by train to Åndalsnes and then by bus.

Three supermarkets are 100 to 330 metres from the visitor berths, but on Sundays most shops in Norway are closed.

In summer on the coast on warm days the wind usually blows from the north-east. The sea area off Stad south-west of Ålesund is considered particularly rough.

Where is Ålesund marina?

Ålesund marina lies in the Brosund, the narrow sound that divides the town centre. The visitor berths are in the inner harbour at the northern end of the Brosund, north of the bridges; the harbour's postal address is Skansekaia. You reach the pontoons from the north through the breakwater entrance. Further south three low bridges cross the Brosund, under which only small boats without masts can pass.

All around stand the Art Nouveau buildings that were built after the town fire of 1904. The marina is operated by the regional port authority, Ålesundregionens havnevesen, which Ålesund has joined with the neighbouring municipalities of Giske, Haram and Sula.

Arriving for the start of your trip at Ålesund marina

Ålesund has its own airport but no railway station. Those not flying arrive by coach, car or boat.

From Ålesund Vigra airport to the marina

Ålesund Vigra airport (AES) is on the island of Vigra in the neighbouring municipality of Giske, about 18 kilometres north of the town. Besides domestic flights there are also international connections.

The airport bus run by Vy Buss serves most of the larger departures and arrivals and takes about 25 minutes to the centre of Ålesund. It also stops at the Moa shopping area. From the town centre, it is only a few minutes' walk to the Brosundet. Alternatively, you can take a taxi straight to the guest harbour. There is a second airport with domestic flights in Ørsta-Volda (Hovden), south of Ålesund.

By car, train, coach or mail boat

By train you travel from Oslo or Trondheim to Dombås and change there to the train to Åndalsnes. At Åndalsnes station the bus is waiting, which runs along the Romsdalsfjord via Vestnes and the Ørskogfjellet to Ålesund. Long-distance coaches also connect Ålesund directly with Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim, including overnight services.

The mail boats on the Bergen–Kirkenes coastal route call at Ålesund daily, northbound and southbound.

By car you come from Oslo via the E6 to Dombås and then via the E136 through the Romsdal valley, from Trondheim and from Bergen via the E39. In winter passes may be closed.

Parking

On the public on-street car parks in the town centre, you pay Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. How long you may stay varies and is shown on the signs. Where a two-hour limit applies, you only get two hours of parking time, no matter how much you pay. For several days on board, use one of the multi-storey car parks in the centre. You can also book a parking space in advance at Vigra airport and take the airport bus into town from there.

Showers and sanitary facilities

The guest harbour's sanitary facilities are at Lorkenestorget. Showers and toilets are included in the berthing fee, and one load of washing costs 50 NOK, with detergent included (as of November 2026). The toilets are open to the public from 7 am to 6 pm. After that, you open the door with the four-digit code printed at the bottom of the payment app receipt, followed by the hash key.

Shopping for the trip

For provisions you only walk a few steps: the Kiwi in the Kremmergaarden is about 110 metres from the marina, the Bunnpris in the Torghallen about 200 metres. A wider selection is at the Eurospar in the Ålesund storsenter shopping centre, about 330 metres away. Large shopping centres are about 10 kilometres east of the town; you get there by car or bus. Chandlery is available from one of the town's ship chandlers. If possible plan your main shopping before Sunday: in Norway most shops must close on Sundays and public holidays. Small food shops up to 100 square metres, petrol stations and kiosks are allowed to stay open.

Supermarkets sell beer on Mondays to Fridays at most until 8 p.m. and on Saturdays until 6 p.m. Wine and spirits are only available from the state monopoly shop Vinmonopolet, which generally opens Mondays to Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

Two pharmacies are right by the marina: the Vitusapotek in the Kremmergaarden about 80 metres away and Apotek 1 Nordstjernen about 130 metres away. The regional hospital is Ålesund sjukehus in the Åse district, about 8 kilometres as the crow flies east of the Brosund. Outside surgery hours you can reach the on-call medical service (Legevakt) anywhere in Norway on 116 117. In life-threatening cases dial the medical emergency number 113.

113: medical emergency

112: Police

110: Fire brigade

116 117: medical emergency service

At sea: VHF channel 16. For the Møre coast the coast radio station Kystradio Sør is responsible, which works with the main rescue coordination centre for southern Norway at Sola. Its emergency number is +47 51 51 70 00.

What does Ålesund marina offer?

Ålesund guest harbour has around 140 metres of floating and visitor pontoons with around 50 visitor berths in the middle of the city. It is sheltered, open in winter too, and up to 5 metres deep. You may stay for a maximum of 14 days; for longer stays, please arrange this with the harbour watch beforehand. Electricity, fresh water and Wi-Fi are included in the berthing fee.

Feature

Details

Location

Brosundet in the city centre, address Skansekaia

Operator

Ålesundregionens havnevesen (Regional Port Authority)

Pontoons

around 140 m of floating and visitor berths

Visitor berths

around 50

Water depth

up to 5 m

Maximum stay

14 days

Toilets

Showers, toilets and washing machine at Lorkenestorget

Berthing fee per day

under 12 m 200 NOK, 12 to 15 m 450 NOK, over 15 m 650 NOK (as of November 2026)

Payment

by app, cash or card via the harbour office

VHF

Channel 12 (Port Authority)

Phone

Harbour watch +47 95 88 34 00 (daily 6 am to midnight), harbour authority +47 70 16 34 00

Equipment

You can dispose of rubbish in the bins on the floating pontoons. Additional visitor berths with electricity and water are located at a hotel pier and at a 66-metre stone quay in the centre.

For a short stop there is also the free landing stage Softisbrygga at Skateflua.

What is the weather like for sailing in Ålesund?

On the Møre coast the wind usually blows from south-east to south-west in winter. In summer on warm days it often comes as a sea breeze from the north-east, but in the fjords usually from the north-west. Passing lows bring strong winds and occasionally gales, mostly from south-west to north-west. For the coast, the Norwegian Meteorological Service issues warnings from force 7 upwards.

At mean spring tide the water rises and falls by around one and a half to just under two metres along this stretch of coast.

In the fjords the wind often blows out of the fjord, channelled by the mountains. In Aspevågen just west of the centre there are katabatic gusts. Sea fog occurs mainly in the summer months along the coast. Particularly rough is the sea area off Stad: the peninsula drops steeply into the open sea with no protective skerries in front.

What sailing destinations are near Ålesund?

From Ålesund you can sail either into the branching fjord system of the Storfjord or along the coast to the islands. The distances are rounded sea miles on the usual course from the guest harbour; for precise planning use the chart.

Runde: around 15 nm to the south-west. The island rises to 294 metres and is famous for its bird cliffs. Over 240 bird species have been recorded here, including puffins.

Sæbø in Hjørundfjord: around 25 nm. The roughly 21-kilometre-long fjord branches off from Storfjord and runs south-eastward deep into the steep Sunnmøre Alps.

Hellesylt and Geiranger: around 50 nm to Hellesylt and around 55 nm to Geiranger, through Storfjord and Sunnylvsfjord. The 15-kilometre-long Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Seven Sisters waterfalls plunge around 250 metres into the fjord there.

Molde: around 35 nm to the north-east. The town lies on Romsdalsfjord; from the Varden viewpoint you can see the 222 peaks of the Molde panorama.

Stad: around 40 nm to the south-west. If you want to continue further south, you have to go around the peninsula, as the planned ship tunnel through Stad has not yet been built. As things stand (November 2026), preparatory work is under way, and construction of the tunnel itself is due to begin in January 2027.

Beyond Stad the coast continues southward. If your trip ends or begins there, you will find the berths in the portrait of the Ports in Bergen.

What can you do on a harbour day in Ålesund?

The town centre begins right at the visitor berths; you can reach most places on foot.

Art Nouveau old town: After the 1904 city fire, Ålesund lay in ashes. The rebuilding produced one of the most cohesive Art Nouveau townscapes in Europe, which you can best discover on a walk around Brosundet.

Jugendstilsenteret and KUBE: The national Art Nouveau centre at Apotekergata 16 displays original interiors from the period in the old pharmacy of 1907. Next door in the former bank building of 1906, the KUBE art museum presents art, design and architecture.

Aksla and Fjellstua: From the city park, 418 steps lead up the town mountain Aksla. At the top you have views over the islands, the town and as far as the Sunnmøre Alps; the Fjellstua restaurant serves coffee and svele, the Norwegian pancakes. You can also reach it by car or taxi via the road.

Atlanterhavsparken: The aquarium in Tueneset around three kilometres from the centre displays animals of the Norwegian coast and the Atlantic. The water is pumped directly from the sea.

For skippers: Berthing and sea weather in Ålesund

You can reach the harbour authority's harbour watch on VHF channel 12 and by phone on +47 95 88 34 00. It is staffed daily from 6 am to midnight, with an on-call service at night. You can also monitor channel 16 as the distress and calling channel.

Registration and Berthing

You berth at the floating and visitors' pontoons in the Brosundet, rafting alongside if necessary.

You pay the berthing fee in the GoMarina app straight after mooring. If you want to pay in cash or by card, call the harbour watch. Anyone who does not pay must pay a penalty fee of 500 NOK per day in addition to the berthing fee.

Harbour rules

The following rules apply to the visitors' harbour and the inner harbour:

A maximum of five boats abreast is recommended, and gaps are left between the rafts. In the inner harbour, a fairway at least 15 metres wide must always be kept clear, because speedboats and fishing boats operate there.

Night-time quiet hours must be observed.

At the Softisbrygga jetty at Skateflua, the first hour is currently free. It is intended only for short stops; for overnight stays, you moor in the guest harbour.

Anchoring is prohibited in the inner harbour. You may also not anchor in front of the harbour entrance if doing so would obstruct traffic. Keep your speed low enough that your wash does not endanger other boats or installations.

Approach

Ålesund's harbour basin is protected to the north by a breakwater running from Aspøya towards Skansekaia. The inner harbour between the breakwater light and the Brosundet is fairly narrow, and at times there is heavy traffic. If a meeting situation arises in the entrance, the entering boat waits outside until the departing boat has cleared the breakwater light. In westerly and north-westerly seas, some swell enters the harbour.

The visitors' pontoons lie north of the bridges in the Brosundet, so you always approach them from the north. Only small boats without masts can pass through the sound itself, as the three bridges are low. The southernmost bridge is even lowered to quay height for transports. To the west of the town, the bridge over the Steinvågsundet between the islands of Heissa and Aspøya has a clearance of 17 metres. There is heavy traffic there, which you must not obstruct.

When cruise ships are berthed at Stornespiren and Prestebrygga, passage through the Brosundet from the south and the lifting bridge are closed for safety reasons. This only affects small boats passing through the sound.

Which marine weather forecast applies in Ålesund?

For the Norwegian coast, the state meteorological service Meteorologisk institutt (MET Norway) issues the official forecasts and warnings. You will find them on the weather portal yr. Gale and storm warnings are also broadcast by the coast radio on VHF; for Møre this is Kystradio Sør. The warning thresholds for the coast are explained by MET Norway on its website.

Trips from Ålesund on Törnfinder

Im Oktober 2026 gibt es auf Törnfinder 1 Törntermin in den nächsten zwölf Monaten mit Start oder Ziel Ålesund.

Trips along the entire Norwegian coast, from the southern fjords to the far north, can be found under cabin charter in Norway, all sailing areas in the trip overview.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Ålesund Airport to the visitors' harbour?

By airport bus or taxi: The bus takes about 25 minutes from Vigra Airport to the centre, from where it is a few minutes' walk to the Brosundet. The airport is about 18 kilometres north of the town.

Where do I park at the start of a trip in Ålesund?

In one of the multi-storey car parks in the centre. On the on-street car parks in the town centre, you pay Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm, and the parking time is limited depending on the sign, so the multi-storey car parks are better for several days. At Vigra airport, you can book a parking space in advance.

Can I go shopping in Ålesund on Sunday?

Only to a limited extent: on Sundays only small food shops up to 100 square metres, petrol stations and kiosks may open. Wine and spirits are not available at all on Sundays; the monopoly shop Vinmonopolet is open Monday to Saturday.

What does a berth in Ålesund visitors' harbour cost?

200 NOK per day for boats under 12 metres, 450 NOK for 12 to 15 metres and 650 NOK over 15 metres (as of November 2026). Electricity, water, Wi-Fi, showers and toilets are included, and payment is made via the app.

Can I sail through the Brosundet with a sailing boat?

No, not with mast up. The three bridges over the Brosundet are so low that only small boats without masts can pass through. The visitors' pontoons lie north of the bridges; you reach them from the harbour basin to the north.

Which VHF channel does Ålesund visitors' harbour use?

Channel 12, where the regional port authority answers. You can reach the harbour watch by phone on +47 95 88 34 00.

How far is it from Ålesund to the Geirangerfjord?

By boat it is about 50 nm to Hellesylt and about 55 nm to Geiranger, through Storfjord and Sunnylvsfjord. Along the way lies the Hjørundfjord with Sæbø, about 25 nm from the visitors' harbour.

Gästehafen Ålesund: Anreise per Flug, Bus oder Postschiff, Liegeplätze im Brosundet, Segelwetter und Törnziele bis zum Geirangerfjord.

[536

post-1670314","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-reviere-haefen","category-536","description-off
["GET
