Here you'll read how to get to Playa Blanca from the airport and by ferry, where to park and shop, what wind to expect, which destinations lie off the southern tip and what skippers should know when entering harbour.

The essentials at a glance

Bus routes 161 and 162 run from Lanzarote Airport via Puerto del Carmen to Playa Blanca; by taxi or hire car you take the LZ-2 dual carriageway.

The marina is large: 550 berths at floating pontoons with finger pontoons, plus a promenade with shops, restaurants and a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The marina has a supermarket and a pay-and-display car park.

The trade winds usually blow from the northeast, stronger in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. The marina lies in the lee of the island.

Fuerteventura is close: Corralejo lies only around 7 to 8 nautical miles away on the other side of the La Bocaina strait.

Where is Marina Rubicón?

Marina Rubicón lies in the Castillo del Águila district on the eastern edge of Playa Blanca, the resort at the southern tip of Lanzarote in the municipality of Yaiza. East of the marina begins the cliff coast and bathing bays of the Los Ajaches natural monument with Playa de Papagayo; to the west the waterfront promenade leads into the centre of Playa Blanca.

Around 1.8 kilometres to the west lies Playa Blanca's ferry port, from which ferries depart for Fuerteventura. Opposite, on the other side of the La Bocaina strait, lie Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura and the small island of Lobos.

Arriving at Marina Rubicón for your trip start

You arrive via Lanzarote Airport or, if you are already on Fuerteventura, by ferry from Corralejo.

From Lanzarote Airport to Playa Blanca

César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport lies near Arrecife, around 22 kilometres as the crow flies northeast of the marina; the road is considerably longer. By taxi or hire car you take the LZ-2 westbound to Playa Blanca.

The bus leaves from the stop in front of the arrivals hall (level 0, Terminals 1 and 2). Route 161 runs roughly every 30 to 60 minutes via Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero and Yaiza to Playa Blanca, towards Playa Blanca between 7:30 am and 9:30 pm (as of October 2026). Late in the evening, routes 61 and 162 take over, with route 162 still running after midnight. Route 161 ends at the ferry port (Muelle de Playa Blanca stop). From there, you continue to the marina on town route 30, which runs as a loop through Playa Blanca and stops at Marina Rubicón, as things stand (November 2026) roughly every 30 minutes during the day. The timetables are available on the airport's website.

By car, coach or ferry

By car you reach Playa Blanca from Arrecife via the LZ-2; the dual carriageway ends in the south of the island. Route 162 also runs from Arrecife via the airport to Playa Blanca.

From Fuerteventura, you take the ferry from Corralejo. The crossing to Playa Blanca is around 15 kilometres long and takes 25 to 35 minutes depending on the vessel; cars are carried too. There is free parking opposite the ferry terminal. A bus stop and a taxi rank are right at the exit of the port. From there it is just under 2 kilometres east along the coast to Marina Rubicón, and town route 30 connects the Muelle de Playa Blanca stop with the marina.

Parking

Marina Rubicón has its own pay-and-display car park on site. The first 45 minutes are free; after that, parking costs 0.02 euros per minute, or 0.03 euros per minute at night between midnight and 7 am, but no more than 25 euros per day (as of November 2026). Anyone who makes a purchase at a shop or restaurant in the marina that takes part in the marina's customer programme receives two additional hours of credit there. There are disabled parking spaces and charging points for electric cars.

Arrived early: promenade and beach

Waiting time before your trip starts can easily be passed at the marina: shops, cafés and restaurants line the harbour basins. For swimming you walk along the promenade to Playa Blanca, the town beach with white sand, around 1.5 kilometres west of the marina. It has showers and accessible access.

Showers and sanitary facilities

The marina has showers with changing rooms near each pontoon, and a laundry service. Guests with a berth can also use the marina's pool; access for two adults and three children is included in the berth fee.

Shopping for the trip

There are shops and restaurants right at the marina. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the Marina Rubicón market takes place from 9 am to 2 pm, selling mainly jewellery, clothing, leather goods, souvenirs and wine. The marina's shopping area includes a supermarket, a HiperDino Express with baked goods and chilled products, about 500 metres from the harbour basin and open daily from 8 am to 10 pm (as of November 2026). The Supermercado Sun Royal is about 1.5 kilometres away.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

Playa Blanca's health centre lies around 1.9 kilometres from the marina, Farmacia Playa Blanca pharmacy around 1.5 kilometres. The island's hospital, Hospital Universitario Doctor José Molina Orosa, is in Arrecife. Which pharmacy provides emergency service at night and weekends is shown on the emergency rota for the province of Las Palmas, to which Lanzarote belongs.

112: free emergency number 24 hours a day for ambulance, police, fire brigade and sea rescue, also available in English and German in the Canary Islands

900 202 202: free emergency number for sea rescue Salvamento Marítimo, from a telephone

VHF channel 16: distress call at sea. For Lanzarote, the responsible sea rescue coordination centre is Salvamento Marítimo in Las Palmas.

What does the Marina Rubicón offer?

Marina Rubicón has 550 berths at floating pontoons with finger pontoons for monohulls up to 50 metres, plus a pontoon for large yachts up to 90 metres, a fuel station and its own shipyard with a travel lift. It opened in 2003. Diesel and petrol are available at the marina's fuel dock. There is also Wi-Fi at the pontoon and help with mooring. Ashore, the marina has a shipyard with a slipway, a 40-tonne crane, a 90-tonne travel lift and an area for underwater work on the hull. Technical teams carry out mechanical and electronic repairs, and there is also a chandlery, lockers and charging stations for electric cars. In the office, the staff speak English, German, French and Dutch as well as Spanish.

Mooring fees

Charges are calculated per day according to the actual length and beam of the boat, including all attachments. In the 2026/2027 season, a berth for a boat up to 10 metres in length costs €25.70 per day, up to 12 metres €35.20 and up to 15 metres €62.10; water and electricity (220 volts) are included. In addition, there is 7% IGIC and, for boats that have not paid the T-0 navigation fee in their home port, the T-0 per day (as of November 2026). Discounts are available from 15 days' stay, as well as reductions for members of several sailing associations, including Trans-Ocean, Kreuzer-Abteilung, ADAC, Cruising Association and ARC.

What is the weather like in Playa Blanca for sailing?

On Lanzarote, the north-easterly trade wind dominates the sailing weather all year round. In spring and summer it usually blows more strongly, in autumn and winter more gently. If you prefer calmer conditions, that is a reason for a trip in autumn or winter. The marina on the south coast lies in the lee of the island, but out in the La Bocaina strait and along the open coasts the trade wind blows at full strength.

The Spanish meteorological service AEMET issues a yellow warning of coastal phenomena from force 7 onwards on the coast. There are tides in the Canary Islands; depth figures on the chart refer to low water.

Which cruising destinations can you reach from the Marina Rubicón?

From the Marina Rubicón, Fuerteventura and the island of Lobos are only a short passage away, the harbours on Lanzarote's east coast and the neighbouring island of La Graciosa can be reached with longer day passages. The distances are rounded water-track distances on the usual course; for precise planning the chart applies.

Destination

Distance

Route

Isla de Lobos

about 7 nm

southwards across the La Bocaina strait

Corralejo (Fuerteventura)

around 7–8 nm

southwards across the La Bocaina strait

Puerto Calero (Lanzarote)

around 10 nm

round the Punta de Papagayo, then north-east along the south-east coast

Marina Lanzarote (Arrecife)

about 19 nm

round the Punta de Papagayo, north-east along the south-east coast

Caleta de Sebo (La Graciosa)

around 36 nm via the west coast, around 41 nm via the east coast

north along the west or east coast of Lanzarote into the El Río strait

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

around 95 nm

south-west across open water, an overnight passage

Corralejo and Lobos

The harbour of Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura is small and has ferry traffic to Playa Blanca, so on the crossing you cross the ferry route. The island of Lobos lies between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and has been a nature reserve since 1982. Anyone wishing to go ashore needs prior authorisation, which is applied for online from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, regardless of how you get to the island.

On Lanzarote's east coast

Heading northeast around Punta de Papagayo, Puerto Calero is a short first leg. Further north lies the capital Arrecife with its large marina, which we present in the portrait of Marina Lanzarote .

La Graciosa and Gran Canaria

La Graciosa lies to the north of Lanzarote beyond the narrow strait of El Río. You apply for a berth in the harbour of Caleta de Sebo online in advance through the Canarian port authority Puertos Canarios, with copies of passport, boat registration and proof of insurance. From Playa Blanca to Gran Canaria it's an overnight passage; more about the destination can be found in the portrait of Las Palmas harbour.

What can you do on a harbour day in Playa Blanca?

Beaches, coastal walks and the salt pans in the west of the island are close to the marina. The distances given are as the crow flies from the marina.

Symbolic image

Playa de Papagayo

Around 3 kilometres east of the marina lies the best known of the Papagayo coves: a small beach about 120 metres long with white sand and usually calm, clear water, good for snorkelling. Behind the beach there's a small beach bar; lifeguards are not on duty here. Access by car is subject to a charge.

Los Ajaches Natural Monument

The Papagayo coves lie within the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, which has been protected since 1994. The mountain range is an old volcanic massif from around 15 million years ago and consists of the oldest rock on the island. Along the coast, cliffs alternate with almost untouched coves, ideal for a walk, for example to Playa de las Mujeres with its archaeological sites.

Underwater sculptures near Las Coloradas

Off the coast near Las Coloradas in Playa Blanca, sculptures by the artist Jason deCaires Taylor stand in a protected area at a depth of around 12 to 14 metres. You can see them whilst diving or snorkelling from the surface.

Salinas de Janubio

Around 9 kilometres north of the marina on the west coast lie the Janubio salt pans. They were laid out in 1895 and expanded in 1915; here seawater evaporates in basins made of clay and stone across 44 hectares. Further north follow the Los Hervideros lava coast with its caves and blowholes, and the fishing village of El Golfo with the green crater lake Charco de los Clicos.

For skippers: Berthing and sea weather at Marina Rubicón

You call Marina Rubicón before entering, on VHF channel 09 or by telephone on +34 928 519 012. The marina's control tower can be reached around the clock on channel 09; channel 16 remains the distress and calling channel.

Registration and Berthing

The reception pontoon is right at the harbour entrance, opposite the marina office. You moor there first and complete your registration, and then you proceed to your assigned berth. The berths are on floating pontoons with finger pontoons, and electricity and water are available at the pontoon. You are sheltered in the harbour basin, whereas the reception pontoon at the entrance is exposed to the swell. The marina is often fully booked. You can reserve a berth via the marina's website, for which you need your boat licence, proof of insurance and certificate of seaworthiness as a file. The reservation becomes binding with a deposit of 20% of the stay, with the remainder due on the day of arrival. Without a deposit, you will only get a berth if one is free on arrival.

Approach

From the west, round the southwest point of the island with the Punta Pechiguera lighthouse, a white tower with characteristic Fl(3)W.30s. From Arrecife and the east coast you come round Punta de Papagayo. The marina entrance is marked on the breakwater by a green light Fl(4)G.15s and on the opposite mole by a red light Fl(4)R.15s. In the entrance the water is around 4 to 4.5 metres deep. Watch out for ferries off Playa Blanca shuttling between the ferry port of Playa Blanca and Corralejo.

Which marine weather forecast applies off Lanzarote?

The definitive source is the sea weather forecast from the Spanish weather authority AEMET. You can obtain it via the VHF marine radio service of the sea rescue service Salvamento Marítimo, via NAVTEX and on the AEMET sea weather page.

The coastal forecast extends to around 20 nautical miles offshore. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura form a single area within it, the "coastal waters of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura". For longer passages, the NAVTEX station Las Palmas broadcasts offshore forecasts and warnings in English on 518 kHz and in Spanish on 490 kHz.

Trips from Playa Blanca on Törnfinder

In October 2026 there is 1 trip date on Törnfinder in the next twelve months with departure or destination Playa Blanca.

All current offers are in the trip overview. Trips around Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the other islands can be found under Sailing in the Canary Islands, further sailing areas under Sailing in Spain.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Lanzarote airport to Marina Rubicón?

Take the bus on line 161 from the arrivals hall to the ferry port of Playa Blanca, roughly every 30 to 60 minutes during the day, and from there take the town line 30 to the Marina Rubicón stop, or go by taxi or hire car via the LZ-2. The marina is around 22 kilometres from the airport as the crow flies.

Where do I park at trip start at Marina Rubicón?

In the marina's pay car park.
