Here you can read how to get from Olbia airport to the harbour, where to park and shop, what weather to expect, which sailing destinations lie along the coast and what skippers should know about registering and berthing.

The essentials at a glance

The nearest airport is Olbia. ARST and Deplano buses connect the harbour with Olbia airport and ferry port.

The harbour adjoins the village of La Caletta directly. You can reach two supermarkets on foot in around 550 and around 900 metres, and bars and restaurants are close by.

A car park is located around 150 metres from the harbour on Viale del Porto.

The central concrete pontoon is reserved for yachts passing through; further berths for leisure boats are managed by the Marina di La Caletta.

Long sandy beaches begin right next to the harbour: to the south the “Spiaggia grande” of La Caletta, to the north the beach of San Giovanni di Posada.

Where is La Caletta harbour?

La Caletta harbour lies between the village of La Caletta to the south and the beach of San Giovanni di Posada to the north. It adjoins the village centre directly, and to the north the tower of San Giovanni rises up, by which you can also easily spot the harbour from the sea. La Caletta is a district of Siniscola; the eastern part of the harbour with the Circolo Nautico already belongs to the municipality of Posada.

It is around 7 kilometres to the main town of Siniscola and around 3 kilometres to Posada. Two moles protect the harbour basin: an outer mole with two arms and a length of around 650 metres, which is partly built as a quay, and an inner mole of 160 metres, alongside which a small darsena for the fishing boats is located. In the middle of the basin runs a central concrete pontoon, which divides the berths into a west side and an east side.

Arriving at La Caletta harbour for the start of your sailing trip

Olbia airport and ferry port are the usual places of arrival; you cover the last stretch south along the coast by bus, hire car or taxi.

From Olbia airport to the harbour

Olbia Costa Smeralda airport lies to the south of the town of Olbia. Siniscola is around 50 kilometres from Olbia, and La Caletta is on the coast east of Siniscola. Scheduled buses run by the regional transport company ARST and the bus operator Deplano connect the harbour with the airport and with Olbia ferry port. In summer, Deplano runs a service from Olbia airport that calls at the larger seaside resorts in the northeast of the island.

In the village there are also agencies that arrange minibus transfers as well as hire cars and motorbikes.

By car, coach or ferry

Ferries from the mainland dock at the ferry port on the Isola Bianca in Olbia, from where it is a five-minute walk to the waterfront promenade. By car, you take the coastal road SS 125 “Orientale Sarda” south. Two provincial roads branch off it to La Caletta: the SP 24 in the north and the SP 3 in the south. If you are coming from Nuoro, take the SS 131 DCN expressway towards Olbia and leave at the Siniscola exit.

Parking

The nearest car park is around 150 metres from the harbour on Viale del Porto, the access road to the harbour. You will find further car parks around 200 metres away on Via Bulgaria and around 250 metres away on Via Napoli. There is also a large car park on the long beach of La Caletta, which many motorhome drivers use as well.

Showers and sanitary facilities

The harbour has showers and toilets, which are part of the facilities at the Circolo Nautico headquarters.

Shopping for the trip

The harbour adjoins the town directly. Two supermarkets are within walking distance: an Ard Discount about 550 metres from the harbour and a Crai about 900 metres away. For a bigger shop, drive to the Conad in Siniscola, about 5.5 kilometres away. Near the harbour there are also bars, restaurants, pizzerias and a hardware shop.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

About 500 metres from the harbour, in the town, there is a Parafarmacia selling over-the-counter medicines. The pharmacy Farmacia La Caletta is about 1.1 kilometres to the southwest, also in the town. In summer, the health authority ASL Nuoro runs a Guardia Medica Turistica in Santa Lucia, the next coastal town south of La Caletta, about 4 kilometres from the harbour: an on-call medical service for holidaymakers, open daily from 8 am to 8 pm and reachable on 116117. There is also a Guardia Medica, the out-of-hours medical service, about 3.8 kilometres from the harbour, and a Poliambulatorio (medical centre) in Siniscola, about 7.5 kilometres away.

These numbers apply in the harbour and at sea off the coast:

112: single European emergency number for ambulance, police and fire brigade

118: medical emergency number

1530: Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera) emergency number for emergencies at sea

What does the harbour of La Caletta offer?

The harbour of La Caletta is a mixed harbour for leisure boats and fishing. The berths for leisure boats are split between two operators: Marina di La Caletta, which runs a service centre on behalf of the municipalities of Siniscola and Posada, and Circolo Nautico La Caletta, a sailing and angling club.

Marina di La Caletta looks after all the pontoons on the west side of the central pontoon, that is, on your left as you enter the harbour, as well as the berths on the outer mole. These berths are intended for leisure boats in general and are equipped with utility connections. The central concrete pontoon itself is reserved for yachts passing through, up to 40 metres in length.

Circolo Nautico La Caletta looks after the water area east of the central pontoon, with six pontoons, four of them floating. About 150 boats are moored there, and the berths are reserved for club members. The club was founded in 1982 and runs a sailing school for children, young people and adults.

La Caletta harbour at a glance

Feature

Details

Location

East coast of Sardinia, municipalities of Siniscola and Posada (Province of Nuoro)

Position of Circolo Nautico (club headquarters)

N 40° 36′ 51.252″ E 9° 45′ 8.294″

Breakwaters

Outer mole about 650 m, inner mole 160 m

Visitor berths

Central concrete pontoon for yachts passing through, up to 40 m

Marina di La Caletta

Pontoons west of the central pontoon and berths on the outer mole, with utility connections

Circolo Nautico

6 pontoons, about 150 berths for members

VHF channel

9 (for Marina di La Caletta and Circolo Nautico)

Facilities

Electricity, water, fuel, internet

Technology

Slipway, small boatyard with travel lift, engine and electrical repairs, divers

Circolo Nautico contact

Telephone +39 0784 810631, Website

Equipment

At the Circolo Nautico pontoons there is help with mooring, electricity, water and lighting at night. In the other zones, under engine, you may do no more than 5 knots within 300 metres of the coast and no more than 10 knots within 600 metres. In Zone B, anchor only on sand or gravel, never on seagrass meadows (Posidonia).

Olbia is a longer leg to the north and lies close to the airport.
