The marinas are sheltered on the Obereidersee, a side water away from the canal. Here you can read how to get to the start of your trip, where the marinas are, where to park and shop, what weather to expect, which destinations are nearby and which canal rules skippers need to know.

The essentials at a glance

The Yachthafen Rendsburg lies at the end of the Obereidersee, right by the old town, and the railway station is around 450 metres away.

By train you can travel without changing from Hamburg, Kiel and Flensburg: the Regionalexpress RE 7 runs roughly hourly to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and to Flensburg, while RE 74 and RB 75 go to Kiel.

There are short-stay car parks on the grounds of the Yachthafen Rendsburg, with further parking at the Am Eiland approach, in the Nienstadtstraße multi-storey car park about 250 metres from the harbour, and at the park-and-ride car park at the railway station.

The nearest supermarket is around 450 metres from the Yachthafen Rendsburg.

On the Kiel Canal, pleasure craft may only travel during the day and in good visibility, and sailing is prohibited.

Where are the marinas in Rendsburg?

In Rendsburg, yachts moor at two places on the Obereidersee. The Yachthafen Rendsburg of the Regatta-Verein Rendsburg is at the western end of the lake, on the edge of the old town and not far from the railway station. Opposite, on the north shore in the neighbouring town of Büdelsdorf, is the harbour of the Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club, around one kilometre further east in a small bay.

You can reach both harbours from the Kiel Canal via the Enge, the narrow link between the canal and the Obereidersee. It branches off the canal at canal kilometre 66, and Yachthafen Rendsburg lies at the end of the lake after about 3 kilometres.

Arriving for the start of your sailing trip in Rendsburg

Rendsburg is easy to reach by train, and Yachthafen Rendsburg is within walking distance, between the railway station and the Obereidersee. The town centre begins right behind the harbour.

From Hamburg Airport to Rendsburg

The nearest major airport is Hamburg. From the airport, the S1 suburban line runs every ten minutes and takes 25 minutes to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. There you board the RE 7 regional express, which runs via Elmshorn and Neumünster to Rendsburg without a change. You can also hire a car at the airport.

By car or train

By car, you reach Rendsburg via the A7 and A210 motorways. If you are coming from the south, you pass under the canal through the canal tunnel on the B 77 federal road. To get to Yachthafen Rendsburg, drive towards the town centre, pass under the railway in the left-hand lane, turn left immediately after the bridge and then follow the signs for "RVR".

Three regional lines stop at Rendsburg station: the RE 7 runs roughly hourly to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and, in the other direction, via Schleswig to Flensburg. The RE 74 goes to Kiel and via Schleswig to Husum, and the RB 75 also goes to Kiel. This reflects the timetable as it currently stands (November 2026).

Parking

On the grounds of Yachthafen Rendsburg, besides the mast storage area there are a few short-stay car parking spaces intended for brief parking only. You may only use cordoned-off areas with permission. If you want to leave your car on the club grounds for longer during your sailing trip, it costs €30 per week. Further parking is available at the Am Eiland access road, in the Nienstadtstraße multi-storey car park about 250 metres away and at Am Ahlmannkai about 300 metres from Yachthafen Rendsburg, as well as in the park-and-ride car park at the station.

At Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club, long-term parking from the third week costs €10 for each week or part of a week.

Showers and sanitary facilities

Yachthafen Rendsburg has washing and shower facilities as well as a washing machine and a tumble dryer. Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club also has shower and toilet facilities, a coin-operated washing machine and a coin-operated tumble dryer. A shower of about two minutes costs 50 cents there.

Shopping for the trip

The nearest supermarket to Yachthafen Rendsburg is EDEKA Hauschildt, about 450 metres away. Aldi is about 600 metres away, REWE about 650 metres and Netto about 850 metres. You will find shops, bakeries and cafés in the pedestrian zone of the old town between Schiffbrückenplatz and the jetties. For a big shop by car, the Rondo shopping centre is in Büdelsdorf.

From Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club, you can reach all shopping facilities within about 600 metres at most, including EDEKA, Aldi and a pharmacy on Hollerstraße. For getting there, the club lends out bicycles and handcarts free of charge.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

The nearest pharmacy is at Bismarckstraße 16. The nearest doctor's surgery, Praxis Obereider, is about 350 metres away. The hospital, Schön Klinik Rendsburg, is about 1.3 kilometres from the marina.

112: Fire brigade and emergency medical services

110: Police

116 117: out-of-hours medical service

On the water: VHF channel 16, call sign "Bremen Rescue", the maritime rescue coordination centre of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS); by telephone on +49 421 536 87 0. From German mobile networks, you can also reach it near the coast via the short code 124 124, a service number provided by the network operators.

Where is Yachthafen Rendsburg?

Yachthafen Rendsburg lies on the street Am Eiland at the western end of the Obereidersee. It is run by the Regatta-Verein Rendsburg von 1888, a club managed by volunteers. The town begins right behind the harbour, and the Altstädter Markt is about 400 metres away.

The harbour is sheltered from storms, and the berths stay ice-free in winter. Five jetties lead from the shore into the basin, called Jetty A to E, and there is also the fuel jetty. On the shore are the clubhouse with the harbour master's office, a playground and the restaurant "Riverside" with a large outdoor terrace. From April to October it is open daily from 11 am to 10 pm, from November to March Monday to Friday from 5 pm to 10 pm, and at weekends and on public holidays from 11 am to 10 pm.

Facilities at Yachthafen Rendsburg

The harbour has around 200 berths, about 120 of them for visitors. The water depth at the visitor berths ranges from 1 to 5 metres. Electricity and water are available at the berths; electricity costs a flat daily rate of €3 for boats up to 10 metres and €4 for larger boats. Wi-Fi is available.

There is a diesel fuel station right on the water. Between 15 April and 15 October it is open daily from 8 am to 9.30 am and from 5 pm to 7.30 pm. There is also a slipway for boats up to 12 tonnes, a mast crane, waste and waste oil disposal, a barbecue area and boat services. Visitors can also keep their boat in the water over winter, for which there is a bubbler system.

Where is the harbour of Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club?

The harbour of Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club lies on the north shore of the Obereidersee in a small bay, at kilometre 2.1 of the Obereider. The club's address is Am Treidelweg 2 in Büdelsdorf. Two jetties lead from the club grounds into the water.

Nearby are the Naturerlebnisbad Büdelsdorf and the Carlshütte with the NordArt art exhibition. For outings, the club lends bicycles to visitors free of charge.

Facilities at the harbour of Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club

The harbour has room for 25 visiting boats. Visitors moor alongside the floating jetty or in free box berths marked with green signs. Electricity costs €3 per 24 hours, and the Wi-Fi reaches as far as the jetty and is free of charge. There is a mast crane, a slipway, a trailer ramp, a pressure washer and a covered shelter. You can get fuel at two petrol stations on the road nearby.

Rendsburg marinas compared

Yachthafen Rendsburg is larger, has its own diesel fuel station and lies right next to the old town and the railway station. The harbour of the Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club is smaller and quieter.

Feature

Yachthafen Rendsburg

Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club

Location

West end of the Obereidersee, Am Eiland 11, Rendsburg

North shore of the Obereidersee, Am Treidelweg 2, Büdelsdorf

Operator

Regatta-Verein Rendsburg von 1888 e. At Yachthafen Rendsburg, the length overall is used, including bowsprit and bathing platform.

What is the weather like for sailing in Rendsburg?

Rendsburg lies inland, and on the canal you travel under engine. The weather matters mainly for the passage out into Kiel Bay or onto the Elbe. As across the whole of northern Germany, westerly winds mostly prevail. For the coast, the Deutscher Wetterdienst (German Weather Service) issues a wind warning from Beaufort 6 and a storm warning from Beaufort 8.

On the canal, visibility matters more than wind. In fog or other reduced visibility, pleasure craft are not permitted to use the canal.

Which sailing destinations are near Rendsburg?

From Rendsburg, you travel through the canal eastwards to Kiel Fjord or westwards to the Elbe. The junction to the Obereidersee is at canal kilometre 66.

Borgstedter See and Audorfer See: On both lakes along the canal, you may sail outside the fairway. On the Borgstedter See there are moorings for pleasure craft; the entrances are at canal kilometres 67.5 and 70, and the bridge over the middle section is 22.50 metres high.

Kiel-Holtenau: At the eastern end of the canal, at kilometre 98.5, there is a mooring for pleasure craft east of the lock. Beyond the lock, Kiel Fjord begins, with the harbours along the Kiellinie.

Strande: Where Kiel Bay narrows into Kiel Fjord, the municipal harbour has 348 berths, electricity, water, sanitary facilities and a fuel dock for boats.

Eckernförde: The Segel-Club Eckernförde has around 300 berths and welcomes visiting boats. Bicycles can be borrowed free of charge.

Schlei: At the southern entrance to the Schlei lies the pilot island of Schleimünde, with its lighthouse. The small harbour borders a nature reserve and has only basic facilities.

Brunsbüttel: At the western end of the canal, at kilometre 1.8 behind the training wall, there is a berth for pleasure craft where you may stay for up to 72 hours. The Elbe begins beyond it.

What can you do on a harbour day in Rendsburg?

The old town of Rendsburg was founded on an island in the Eider and is still largely surrounded by water today. You can reach most of the sights on foot from the Yachthafen Rendsburg.

Old town and Blue Line: A blue line in the paving leads you 3.2 kilometres past the most important buildings. It starts at the Altstädter Markt with the Old Town Hall of 1566, about 400 metres from the marina. Close by stands the Marienkirche of 1287, the oldest building in the town.

High-level railway bridge and transporter ferry: The 2,486-metre-long railway bridge of 1913 crosses the canal at a height of 42 metres. Beneath it, the transporter ferry shuttles between Rendsburg and Osterrönfeld roughly every 15 minutes, free of charge for pedestrians, cyclists and cars up to 3.5 tonnes. It runs from 5 am to 11 pm from April to September, and until 10 pm at other times. The landing stage in Rendsburg is about 1.6 kilometres from the marina.

Museums in the Arsenal: In the former arsenal of the fortress in the Neuwerk district, about 800 metres from the marina, the Historical Museum tells the story of the town and the Printing Museum shows working printing presses.

Jewish Museum: In the oldest surviving synagogue in Schleswig-Holstein, about 800 metres from the marina, the prayer hall, the Jewish ritual bath and the Talmud Torah school have all been preserved.

Ship greeting station (Schiffsbegrüßungsanlage): On the canal near the transporter ferry landing stage, about 1.6 kilometres from the marina, you can watch the large seagoing ships pass by.

Every summer in Büdelsdorf, the NordArt shows contemporary art from all over the world in the halls and park of the former Carlshütte ironworks.

For skippers: berthing, canal rules and sea weather in Rendsburg

Both harbours lie off the canal on the Obereidersee. On the Kiel Canal itself, pleasure craft may only travel during fixed daytime hours and under engine; sailing is prohibited there.

Registration and Berthing

The season at the Yachthafen Rendsburg runs from 15 April to 15 October. During this period the harbour master's office is staffed daily from 8 to 10 am and from 5 to 8 pm, and can be reached on +49 4331 23961. You take the berthing fee to the office yourself. Operations are restricted in the winter months: as things stand (November 2026), visiting boats then berth exclusively at the D pontoon and pay for stays of up to six days at the pay machine.

At the Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club, the harbour master comes to your boat to collect fees daily at around 7 am and 7 pm. If you arrive later or leave earlier, you pay at the “silent harbour master” (honesty box) at the entrance to the sanitary building.

Taking a pleasure craft on the Kiel Canal

The Seeschifffahrtsstraßen-Ordnung (Maritime Shipping Routes Regulations) applies on the canal. The leaflet from the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Nord-Ostsee-Kanal summarises the most important rules for pleasure craft:

Pleasure craft may only travel during daytime hours and not in restricted visibility. The leaflet gives the times in CET, for example 2.30 am to 10 pm in June and 7.30 am to 5 pm in December; during summer time they are each one hour later.

The maximum speed is 12 km/h over the ground, around 6.5 knots. Keep as far to the right as possible.

Sailing is prohibited on the canal, except outside the fairway on the Borgstedter See, Audorfer See and Flemhuder See. Under engine you may also set sails, but you must then display a black cone with its point downwards.

You may not use an autopilot on the canal. Pleasure craft over 20 metres need an AIS transponder, and a pilot is compulsory for a draught of more than 3.1 metres.

At the operational moorings, including in the Obereidersee with the Enge, you may stay for a maximum of 24 hours, and only for overnight stays and while waiting during a canal passage.

While under way, you listen to the VHF channel for your stretch: Channel 3 (Kiel Kanal III) from Breiholz to Kiel-Holtenau, Channel 2 (Kiel Kanal II) between Brunsbüttel and Breiholz, and in the lock areas Channel 13 in Brunsbüttel and Channel 12 in Kiel-Holtenau.

Because the new Kleine Schleuse is under construction, pleasure craft in Kiel-Holtenau are currently (as of November 2026) locked through the large lock chambers together with commercial shipping.

Canal fee for pleasure craft

From 1 January 2027, pleasure craft will no longer pay the passage fee for the Kiel Canal. Until the end of 2026 it still applies, even for partial transits (as of November 2026). You can read what applies until then and how to pay in the article on Canal fee for pleasure craft.

Approaching via the Enge

At canal kilometre 66 you turn into the Enge and follow the buoyed channel, up to 6 metres deep, through the Obereidersee to Yachthafen Rendsburg at the end of the lake. Use the current chart for detailed planning.

For the Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club, be sure to stay in the fairway and turn to starboard only two boat lengths before the pontoon. At the corner of the bay there is an extensive shoal that is not marked by buoys.

All bridges over the canal have a clear headroom of 42 metres, including the Rendsburg railway high bridge. The transporter ferry crosses the canal beneath it. The Gieselaukanal, which branches off at canal kilometre 40.5, takes boats up to 65 metres in length, 9 metres in beam and 2.40 metres in draught.

Which marine weather forecast applies in Rendsburg?

For onward passage, the marine weather forecast of the German Weather Service (DWD) for the North Sea and Baltic Sea applies, along with the coastal warnings for Flensburg to Fehmarn on the Baltic side and for the Elbe estuary on the North Sea side. You can find the current forecast on the DWD sea weather page.

Sailing trips from Rendsburg on Törnfinder

You will find sailing trips along the German coast under Sailing in Germany, all offers in the sailing area under Sailing in the Baltic Sea and all sailing areas in the trip overview.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Rendsburg station to the marina?

Preferably on foot: Yachthafen Rendsburg on the street Am Eiland is about 450 metres from the station. The Regionalexpress RE 7 runs roughly hourly, without changes, from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof to Rendsburg.

Where do I park at the start of a sailing trip in Rendsburg?

For short stays, in the short-stay car parks on the grounds of Yachthafen Rendsburg; for longer stays, also there, at 30 euros per week. There is further parking at the Am Eiland access road, in the Nienstadtstraße multi-storey car park about 250 metres from the harbour, and in the P+R car park at the station.

Are there showers at Yachthafen Rendsburg?

Yes, Yachthafen Rendsburg has washing and shower facilities as well as a washing machine and tumble dryer. The Büdelsdorfer Yacht-Club also has showers.

Are you allowed to sail on the Kiel Canal?

No, sailing is prohibited on the canal itself. It is only permitted outside the fairway on the Borgstedter, Audorfer and Flemhuder See.

Does the Kiel Canal charge fees for pleasure craft?

Not from 1 January 2027: the passage fee for pleasure craft will then be abolished. It still applies until the end of 2026 (as of November 2026).

Can you refuel in Rendsburg?

Yes, Yachthafen Rendsburg has a diesel fuel station right on the water.
