Anyone who has experienced a beach catamaran planing will never forget that feeling. Two brands have shaped this sailing class like no other: Hobie Cat from California and Topcat from Germany.

Both manufacturers have their roots in the 1970s, both offer boats for beginners, families and regatta sailors – and yet they differ in philosophy, construction and community. Hobie Cat stands for international reach and legendary models like the Hobie 16, Topcat for European quality, centreboardless hulls and tool-free assembly.

History of the brands

Hobie Cat (USA)

Hobart 'Hobie' Alter, actually a surfboard pioneer from California, brought the first Hobie 14 to market in 1968 – small, light, sporty and perfect for launching directly from the beach. Just a few years later, in 1971, came the Hobie 16, which became the most successful catamaran in the world. Over 135,000 boats were built.

Hobie's philosophy was clear: simple boats that are fun, without complicated technology. A community quickly developed – the famous 'Hobie Way of Life'. In the 1980s further models followed: the Hobie 18, Hobie 20, later high-tech cats like Tiger or Fox. Today the company concentrates on robust plastic models (Wave, Getaway, T-Series), the timeless Hobie 16 and sporty regatta boats like the Wildcat.

Topcat (Germany)

Topcat was founded in 1979 in Bavaria. The founders Bernd Breymann and Klaus Enzmann were looking for a catamaran that was robust, easy to assemble and worked without centreboards . Their first design, the Topcat F1, was immediately successful.

Topcat established itself in Europe with its own class associations, international championships and a loyal community. The K-Series (K1, K2, K3, K4) forms the backbone of the programme to this day. In 2005 the K1 class received international recognition. Unlike Hobie, Topcat is a small, family-run manufacturerthat focuses on quality, service and decades of spare parts supply.

Hobie Cat – current models

An important point right from the start: The Hobie Cat model range differs by region. In the USA, the Wave, Getaway, Hobie 16 and Wildcat are particularly widespread. In Europe there is also the Hobie 14, the Hobie 15 Club and the T Series (T1/T2). Anyone wishing to buy a Hobie should therefore always check with their regional dealer which models are actually available.

Hobie Wave

The Hobie Wave is the straightforward beginner in the range. At just under 4 m in length and with a boomless mainsail of approx. 8.8 m² it is easy to operate and extremely robust. The hulls are made from rotomoulded plastic – virtually indestructible and easy to maintain.

The boat is unsinkable, has very shallow draught and requires no daggerboards. This makes it perfect for beach and shallow-water sailing. The wide trampoline has room for up to four people. The Wave is particularly popular in sailing schools, clubs and holiday resorts because it forgives mistakes and is virtually maintenance-free.

Hobie Getaway

The Getaway is the big brother of the Wave. At 5.07 m in length and approx. 17 m² of sail area (mainsail + roller jib) it is more stable, faster and offers even more space. Up to six people can sail here.

The Getaway's hull is also made from robust plastic. Particularly practical: the jib can simply be furled and unfurled, so the boat remains easy to control even in freshening winds. Optional side-mounted 'wing seats' can be fitted to provide additional seating comfort. This makes the Getaway the perfect boat for families and clubs looking for a robust, fun-oriented catamaran without sacrificing sporting genes.

Hobie Dragoon

The Dragoon is Hobie's youth and training boat. At 3.91 m in length and approx. 12 m² of sail area (mainsail + jib, optional spinnaker) it is aimed at young sailors.

It is built from GRP, considerably lighter than the plastic models and therefore more sporty. With an optional spinnaker, young sailors can train handling just like on big racing boats. In many clubs the Dragoon is the 'talent factory' for young sailors before they move into the Hobie 16 or F18 classes.

Hobie 16

The Hobie 16 is the icon par excellence. Built virtually unchanged since 1971, it embodies pure beach catamaran fun. At 5.05 m in length and around 19 m² sail area (main + jib) it is sporty, fast and used worldwide.

Characteristic features are the asymmetric hulls without daggerboards and the double trapeze, which allows both sailors to hike out on the side of the boat. The international Hobie 16 class is the world's largest catamaran racing class – with world championships, continental events and national series. Anyone wanting to take catamaran sailing seriously can hardly avoid the Hobie 16.

Hobie Wildcat

The Wildcat is Hobie's high-tech model for the Formula 18 class. With 5.51 m length, approx. 21 m² upwind sail area (main + jib) and a large gennaker, it is a pure racing machine.

The hulls are made from modern composite materials, the catamaran has daggerboards, double trapeze and complex trimming systems. Two experienced sailors can reach speeds of over 20 knots with it. The Wildcat is not intended for beginners – it belongs in the hands of ambitious racing sailors.

Hobie 14 (Europe)

The Hobie 14 was the first Hobie and remains a classic to this day. At 4.27 m length and 11.6 m² sail area it is a thoroughbred single-handed catamaran. In the Turbo version a small jib is added.

The Hobie 14 has no daggerboards, is very agile and ideal for sporty solo sailors who love purist sailing. In Europe there is still an active class association and regattas.

Hobie 15 Club (Europe)

The Hobie 15 Club is a family and training boat. At just under 5 m length and approx. 15 m² sail area (main + jib) it is stable, spacious and forgiving. It can optionally be fitted with a spinnaker.

Its wide hulls provide plenty of buoyancy, the trampoline is large, and the construction is robust. Clubs and schools often use it because it is reliable, safe and easy to handle even for beginners.

Hobie T1 (Europe)

The Hobie T1 is a compact plastic model with 4.04 m length and approx. 11 m² sail area (main + jib). It is boomless, very robust and virtually maintenance-free.

The boat is particularly popular with sailing schools, as it can be set up quickly and is very hard-wearing thanks to the plastic hulls. Ideal for beginners, youngsters and families.

Hobie T2 (Europa)

The T2 is the most powerful plastic cat in the Hobie range. With 4.90 m length and approx. 16 m² sail area (main + jib, optional spinnaker) it is aimed at ambitious leisure sailors.

It is double-trapeze capable, sporty and yet robust enough for training and club use. It thus bridges the gap between the beginner Wave and the sporty Hobie 16.

Topcat – current models

Topcat has pursued a very clear concept since its foundation: All boats are centreboard-free, boomless and can be assembled without tools. This makes them particularly transport-friendly, robust and safe for beginners – without having to sacrifice sporting performance. They are still manufactured in Europe today, in solid GRP quality or as a modern PE model (Avanti).

Topcat K1 – the flagship

The K1 is with 5.50 m length and a sail area of approx. 18 m² (main + jib, optional gennaker) the most powerful model in the fleet. It is clearly designed for sporty sailing and regatta use.

The hulls are narrow and optimised for speed, the sails adapted to modern square-top designs. With gennaker, the K1 achieves high speeds and thus appeals to ambitious sailors looking for an alternative regatta boat to the Hobie 16 or F18.

The K1 is also internationally recognised as a class, with world and European championships. It is regarded as the sporty flagship of Topcat.

Topcat K2X – the all-rounder

The K2X is 5.17 m long and equipped with a sail area of approx. 16 m² (main + jib, optional spinnaker) . It is the most versatile model in the range – stable enough for beginners and families, but sporty enough for regattas.

The hulls offer plenty of buoyancy, the boat can be sailed single-handed as well as crewed. With gennaker, the K2X also cuts a fine figure on regatta courses. It is regarded as the 'people's Topcat' and is widespread in many clubs.

Topcat K3X – the handy one

With 4.92 m length is the K3X the perfect boat for single-handed sailors or small crews. The sail area is approx. 14 m² (main + jib, optional spinnaker).

Particularly striking are the wave-piercer bows, which ensure calm handling even in stronger seas. Despite its compact size, the K3X is a serious sports catamaran that is easy to trail or even transport on a car roof.

Topcat K4X – the compact one

The K4X is with 4.50 m length and approx. 11 m² sail area the smallest boat in the K series. She is lightweight, manoeuvrable and particularly easy to transport.

The K4X is aimed at beginners, families with children or clubs looking for a robust training boat. She is simple to rig, very forgiving and also ideal for young sailors.

Topcat Avanti – the PE model

With the Avanti Topcat has introduced a modern plastic model to its range. The cat is 4.10 m long and equipped with approximately 9 m² sail area .

The hulls are made of polyethylene (PE), similar to the Hobie Wave or Getaway. This makes the Avanti extremely robust, virtually indestructible and ideal for training or charter operations. She is clearly aimed at beginners, families and clubs looking for a low-maintenance boat.

Hobie Cat vs Topcat comparison

Both brands have had their loyal fans for decades – and yet they differ in philosophy, construction and community.

Assembly & transport

Hobie Cat:

Many models (e.g. Hobie 16) have a bolted aluminium frame which is very stable but less transport-friendly. Plastic boats such as the Wave or Getaway are usually stored permanently assembled in clubs. Spontaneous assembly and dismantling is rather the exception.

Topcat:

This is where the great strength lies. All boats can be assembled without tools in a short time. Many models are even roof-transportable. Anyone who wants to remain mobile or does not want to keep the boat in the water permanently benefits from the Topcat system.

Sail handling & safety

Hobie Cat:

Mixed concept. Classic sports boats such as the Hobie 16 or Wildcat have a Großbaumwhich enables precise trimming but also carries a certain risk of injury. Models such as the Wave, Getaway or the T series, on the other hand, deliberately dispense with the boom – which beginners find safer.

Topcat:

All models are boomless. This reduces the risk of head injuries and makes handling simpler. A plus point for beginners and families – for sporty, ambitious sailors it means that trimming options are somewhat more limited.

Suitability for Sailing Areas

Hobie Cat:

Hobie's wide model range covers many areas of use. Polyethylene models (Wave, Getaway, T-Series) are ideal for beach and shallow water as they are virtually indestructible. Sport models (Hobie 16, Wildcat) feel at home on waves and in regattas too.

Topcat:

The GRP hulls are robust but less 'indestructible' than PE. However, they sail more finely, are lighter and have more balanced handling characteristics. The K2X and K3X in particular cope very well with inland waters and coastal conditions.

Robustness & Maintenance

Hobie Cat:

The PE hulls (Wave, Getaway, T-Series) are virtually indestructible and easy to maintain – an advantage for schools and resorts. The GRP models (Hobie 16, Dragoon, Wildcat) are well proven but slightly more maintenance-intensive.

Topcat:

High-quality GRP construction 'Made in Germany'. Spare parts often still fit after decades. Low maintenance, but not as resistant to hard beach landings as PE.

Price & Spare Parts

Hobie Cat:

Prices range from around €9,000 (Wave) to over €25,000 (Wildcat).
