How cabin charter works in Thailand

With cabin charter in Thailand you book a cabin or berth on a yacht, not the whole boat. The skipper plans the route, commands the boat and carries responsibility. You sail along, snorkel in the bays and go ashore whenever it suits.

All Thailand trips published here are week-long trips that start in Phuket and return there. Sailing is on monohulls and catamarans. At night you usually anchor in a bay, occasionally in a marina.

Sailing in Thailand: Andaman Sea not Gulf of Thailand

Thailand has two coasts. The trips here take place on the west coast in the Andaman Sea, around Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi. On the Gulf of Thailand in the east, around Koh Samui for instance, the best sailing season is different.

Sailing in Thailand: the areas around Phuket

From Phuket you can reach three very different sailing areas in a week: the sheltered bay of Phang Nga, the islands off Krabi with Phi Phi and, depending on season, the Similan Islands in the open sea.

Bay of Phang Nga and Koh Yao

Vertical limestone cliffs rise from calm, green water, with caves and lagoons in between that you explore by canoe. The bay is well sheltered even in the rainy season.

Krabi and Phi Phi Islands

The beaches of Railay and Koh Lanta, the cliffs of Koh Phi Phi and many small islands in between. During the day the well-known bays are busy, in the evening it becomes quiet.

Granite rocks, white sand and clear water for snorkelling and diving, around 70 kilometres north-west of Phuket. The national park is usually only open from mid-October to mid-May.

Anchorages on the east and south coasts of Phuket, small islands such as Koh Racha and Koh Khai for snorkelling. More on the departure harbour in the Phuket harbour portrait.

Monsoon, wind and weather in Thailand

From November to April the northeast monsoon blows, usually at 2 to 4 Beaufort, dry with calm seas on the west coast. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain, stronger winds and swell from the southwest. The tidal range off Phuket is up to around three metres. The official weather forecast is published by the Thai Meteorological Department.

As of 29.10.2026: Törnfinder lists around 90 Thailand trips from one provider. All last 7–8 days and all are round trips with the same start and end port. All trips start in Phuket, and most departures are in January and February. A week-long trip usually costs 1,300–1,400 € per person.

How these figures are calculated

All trips published on Törnfinder with harbours in Thailand and departure dates from today onwards are analysed; the figures are recalculated twice a day. Prices are the providers' stated rates per person; offers for a whole yacht with skipper, which are calculated per boat, are not included in the prices. "Usually" refers to the middle half of the offers, excluding the cheapest and most expensive quarters. Departure harbour is the starting harbour named in the listing; a round trip is a trip with the same departure and destination harbour. The texts on this page are written and checked by the editorial team at toernfinder.de.

Best time of year for sailing holidays in Thailand

The best time for sailing in Thailand is November to April, when the Andaman Sea has its dry season.

January to March are the driest months. From May to October rain is frequent, usually as heavy showers with sunshine in between. It is then calmer and routes tend to favour the sheltered Phang Nga Bay.

Frequently asked questions about cabin charter in Thailand

Here you'll find brief answers to the questions that come up most often before a sailing trip in Thailand.

Where can I book a sailing trip in Thailand?

On Törnfinder you send your enquiry directly to the provider, who confirms your place and enters into the contract with you. Törnfinder itself is not an organiser. In the list above you can see dates, boat and price.

What does a sailing trip in Thailand cost?

A week-long trip from Phuket usually costs 1,300–1,400 € per person. Flight and ship's kitty are additional, as are any national park fees.

When is the best time to travel for sailing in Thailand?

November to April. That's when the north-east monsoon blows, it's dry and the sea off Phuket is usually calm. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings frequent showers and more swell. Trips still run, but the route is then more weather-dependent.

Can you sail to the Similan Islands in summer?

Usually not. The Similan National Park is normally closed from mid-May to mid-October. During this time trips sail instead to the sheltered bay of Phang Nga and the islands off Krabi.

How warm is the water in Thailand?

The water in the Andaman Sea stays at 28 to 30 °C all year round. Air temperatures reach 31 to 33 °C during the day.

Is a sailing trip in Thailand suitable for beginners?

Yes. In the dry season wind and swell are usually moderate, the legs between islands are short. You need no experience, just a willingness to live aboard in tropical heat.

Do I need a sailing licence for a sailing trip in Thailand?

No, not as crew. The skipper is in command of the boat. For entry you need a passport valid for at least six months.
