A voyage through the lesser-known regions of Norway. We depart from Trondheim heading towards the Arctic Circle. Travellers by car usually pass through this region quickly. We will take our time. Here too we find countless small islands and rocks above and below water, challenging us to navigate carefully. On our voyage we leave Nord-Trøndelag and reach Torghatten, the mountain with a huge hole. A visit to the remote whisky island of Myken or the municipality of Træna, 33 nautical miles off the coast and situated on the Arctic Circle, would be possible. Only four of the approximately 400 islands, rocks and islets there are inhabited, although the settlement is one of Norway's oldest fishing communities. An excursion to the Svartisen Glacier, Norway's second-largest glacier, is also an option. Shortly before our destination we then encounter the Saltstraumen, which is considered the world's strongest tidal current. 400 million cubic metres of water force their way through a strait 150 m wide and 2.5 km long, creating enormous whirlpools and eddies.

Our destination Bodø is the centre of the Nordland region and has a distinctly urban feel. That it is not actually so large becomes apparent from the fact that one can very easily walk from the harbour to the airport.

Due to the advanced season, there is a good chance of observing the Northern Lights if the weather is favourable. But the appearance of the Northern Lights does not just depend on the weather and darkness.

What is described here are some examples. The actual course of the trip, the distance sailed and the destinations reached depend on wind, sea state and ultimately also on the crew. It follows the assessment and decision of the skipper.

• Total distance approx. 300 nm.

• Difficulty level 2: No sailing knowledge required - Day legs longer (up to 10 hours) - Overnight stays also at anchor.

• Skipper Martin Zeyer has been sailing professionally since 1991 and has well over 250,000 nm in his wake as skipper and sailing instructor.

• On this trip, ATALANTA will accommodate a maximum of 7 guests (in single berths).
