From Madeira we sail across the open Atlantic heading south. After a two- to three-day passage we reach the Canary Islands. There will be time to call at further islands and train intensively for the practical SKS examination. Blue-water sailing, night passages and life in the watch system make this trip a special experience and good preparation for future sea voyages.

During the passage we sail in the watch system – including at night. Everyone on board is involved in navigation, weather observation, sail handling and daily life on board. After the Atlantic crossing we use the remaining time to train the examination-relevant manoeuvres intensively and get to know the Canary Islands from the water.

The trip is aimed at sailors who already have initial experience and wish to prepare specifically for the practical examination for the SKS. In addition to manoeuvre training, the focus is also on gaining confidence in ship handling and experiencing longer passages at sea.

In January the temperatures around Madeira and the Canaries are usually mild. On the open Atlantic, however, wind, waves and weather can still be challenging. The exact route between the islands therefore depends on the current conditions and the progress of the examination preparation.

On 14 January the official examiners come on board in San Miguel and conduct the practical SKS examination on the yacht on which the training took place. The trip ends the following morning.
