Great transatlantic adventure on a catamaran

The Atlantic crossing along the Barefoot Route from Tenerife to Martinique was a truly great adventure. After we'd all arrived on board and got to know one another, we spent a further 2 days in the harbour and in all sorts of supermarkets doing a big shop for the coming weeks on the Atlantic. Once everything had finally been provisioned – including 500 litres of drinking water in canisters – and we'd spent a lovely evening at a restaurant with the crews of the other two catamarans with whom we'd be crossing the Atlantic as a flotilla, we finally set out onto the Atlantic on 1 November 2025. The mood on board was fantastic and everyone was delighted that things were finally getting underway. We'd now had plenty of time to get to know one another. Our crew got on brilliantly and we had loads of fun together, rather like a typical shared flat, just on the water. Living so closely together on board worked really well – of course you spend a lot of time together, but whenever you needed a bit of time to yourself, you could always find a little spot on board the Starfish. Our crew, with Felix as skipper, ranged in age from 25 to 33, and everyone was keen to spend time together. Watches were kept in pairs and arranged so that the two people complemented each other well, with a more experienced person in every watch, meaning you always felt very safe. If we had any questions or uncertainties, we could wake Felix at any time. Watches always lasted 3 hours, with the watch times rotating each day, so that everyone got a mix of slightly more tiring and more pleasant shifts. On the whole, though, we adjusted pretty well to the new sleep rhythm. The sunrise and sunset watches were the loveliest, but being out on deck in the middle of the night was also something special – looking up at the clear sky with someone else, counting shooting stars, or watching the bioluminescent plankton in the water. During the day we did a lot of reading, talking, playing games, having film nights, making jewellery, cooking, baking, sleeping or doing sport. Some of us also had great fun fishing and were very successful, landing a mahi-mahi 1.5 metres long. It never got boring. A particular highlight was the swim stop when we were in the middle of the Atlantic, having covered half the distance, and everyone jumped together into the clear blue water.
The sunrises and sunsets, and the dolphins that often came to visit us, are of course also among my highlights. I wasn't spared from seasickness, and neither were a few of the others, but we always looked after one another well and the mood on board remained positive throughout — even the torn spinnaker or problems with the engine couldn't dampen our spirits.
Every evening we ate together and Felix would fill us in on the weather situation and the course for the night, so everyone knew what to expect for their night watch. We had very good wind most of the time and rarely needed the engine. We took it in turns to cook dinner for everyone, with each person thinking up recipes beforehand that could be cooked well on board. Breakfast and lunchtime snacks were usually sorted out individually, since someone was always asleep due to the watch rotation. The cabins were located in the two hulls, with two people always sharing a bed and their own bathroom, which worked brilliantly for everyone.
Arriving in Martinique early in the morning, after exactly 21 days on the Atlantic and 2,795 nautical miles, was a once-in-a-lifetime feeling, and everyone was euphoric as we anchored in the stunning bay off a white sandy beach lined with countless palm trees. After a leisurely breakfast, we all swam ashore and spent the rest of the day in the water and on the beach. The feeling on that day is hard to put into words, but everyone was happy and relieved that we'd mastered the Atlantic crossing so well as a team, and that our time on board had simply been wonderful.
I'm very grateful for this fantastic adventure and can definitely recommend the Atlantic crossing with FluxAhoi. The organisation was straightforward, I always felt safe and comfortable, and I learned a lot about sailing along the way. I'd book another trip with FluxAhoi in a heartbeat.

Super educational SKS trip

This was a really great trip! We sailed from Palermo to Mallorca and learned a huge amount along the way. Two longer legs with night watches, decent wind and a great atmosphere on board. Felix was a very relaxed and competent skipper, always explained everything well and you could ask any question.

The preparation for the SKS exam was excellent, we practised all the manoeuvres repeatedly and never felt like we were just "along for the ride". It was sometimes demanding, but great fun, and in the end we were all well prepared for the exam. Covering over 600nm offshore also taught us a lot more that might not have been essential for the exam, but is invaluable for a sailor's life.

Would definitely recommend this trip, especially if you need the miles for your SKS and want to do some proper sailing while you're at it. Despite adverse circumstances (a lightning strike right next to the boat shortly before the exam), our whole group passed!

Sailing school with fantastic trips!

The sailing trip set off from Málaga heading towards Lagos, through the Strait of Gibraltar.

All the information was sent in advance by email, along with prompt responses to any questions.

The sailing yacht was modern and well equipped.

The skipper was very friendly, explained a lot and was always respectful.

We were a great crew and had a lot of fun.

Passed the SSS examination off Mallorca in May – despite days of storms and wet manoeuvre training. On exam day, challenging but manageable weather: everyone passed. Afterwards, delivery to Palma and sailed the 5,000th nautical mile – a perfect finale.

In December 2023 we sailed our Lagoon 42 "Pirelli" non-stop from Tenerife to the Caribbean. Landfall in Sint Maarten and through the Anguilla Channel to the British Virgin Islands. 23.5 days and 3,097 nautical miles. With a crew of 4, a parasailor and a whole lot of fish on the line, we had a great time!
