Atlantic adventure – with the Roald Amundsen from Brest to Vigo
Thursday, 29 October – Sunday, 8 November 2026

Across the Bay of Biscay, past Cape Finisterre to the rugged coast of Galicia. Eleven days on the open Atlantic, classic ocean sailing and an arrival in one of the warmest regions of Europe.

This trip is for anyone who wants to experience the sea in all its vastness. We leave Brest behind us and head south – straight into one of the most famous sea areas in the world. There will be no anchoring. We sail through, in watch rotation, day and night. Exactly the way you sail the Atlantic.

The Bay of Biscay – a sea area with a reputation

Few sea areas carry a name like the Bay of Biscay. For centuries it has been the proving ground of the great seafarers – notorious for its short, steep seas, its powerful low-pressure systems and the rapid interplay of sun and storm. Yet the Bay of Biscay is more than its reputation. It can be peaceful and friendly for days on end, with long Atlantic swells and encounters you won't forget: schools of dolphins at the bow, whales on the horizon, flocks of seabirds accompanying the ship.

We cross the Bay of Biscay in a season when it shows what it can do. That's precisely why this is a trip for everyone who wants to experience real ocean sailing – not coastal cruising, but pure Atlantic.

Cape Finisterre – the end of the world

After days on the open sea, the Spanish coast appears to port. Here lies Cape Finisterre, the "end of the world", as the Romans called it. For centuries it was considered the westernmost point of Europe and the final stage of the Way of St James. We round it under sail, with a view of the rugged rocks, the old lighthouse and the first breath of what comes next: Galicia.

Galicia – warmth on the Atlantic

With every nautical mile southwards the mood changes. The coast of Galicia is deeply indented, its rías resemble fjords, its villages live from the sea and its creatures. Galicia is famous for its hospitality, the warmth of its people and – travellers agree on this – for one of the finest cuisines in Europe. Pulpo a la gallega, fresh mussels, grilled fish, Albariño from the vines above the bay. Anyone landing here rarely escapes unscathed: you return with the desire to come back.

Before Vigo – the islands of the Atlantic

Before we reach Vigo, we pass another special piece of nature: the Islas Cíes. The small islands off the mouth of the Ría de Vigo are part of the "Islas Atlánticas de Galicia" national park and with their Playa de Rodas one of the most beautiful beaches in the world comes into view. Wild cliffs, turquoise water, white sand and an almost untouched natural landscape – an image that's hard to forget.

Then the Roald enters Vigo. The largest port city in Galicia, lively, honest, with a harbour that still ranks today as one of the most important fishing ports in Europe.

Sail training on watch rotation

On this trip we sail through in the classic way, day and night. In a three-watch system you're part of the crew – with everything that entails: setting and striking sail, helming, lookout, navigation, watch handovers in the dark. An experienced permanent crew will teach you everything you need to know. Prior experience is not essential, but you should bring a desire for life on board, for night watches and for the special sense of community that comes with a passage under sail.

What to expect

Eleven days on a classic tall ship. An Atlantic crossing with everything that belongs to it. A sea area you either respect or learn to love – usually both. And at the end a harbour where you arrive with a glass of Albariño and a plate of pulpo and understand why so many sailors have stayed here.

Come aboard. Feel the Atlantic. Discover Galicia.
