Habichtsinseln Rund 2027 – With the Roald Amundsen through the Azores
Ponta Delgada – Ponta Delgada (Azores circuit)

Sunday, 17 January – Tuesday, 26 January 2027

Reduced: €980 | Adults: €1400

Ten days amongst the volcanic islands of the Azores. Pico, Faial, São Jorge – an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic that many sailors spend their whole lives searching for. We have it ahead of our bow.

There are destinations sailors talk about for years. The Azores are amongst them. Situated in the middle of the North Atlantic, far from Europe yet still part of it, they are a place of longing for many bluewater sailors. On this trip we take ten days to experience the archipelago from within – island to island, in a close, intensive interplay between the feeling of the open ocean and harbour romance.

Departure from São Miguel
We start in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, the lively capital of the archipelago. After just a few hours at sea we have the deep blue water beneath our keel that surrounds the Azores – one of the clearest and deepest stretches of ocean in Europe. Ahead of us lies an island group scattered like a string of pearls across almost 600 kilometres of Atlantic. Which islands we call at exactly is decided by wind and weather together with us – the Azores set their own pace of travel.

Pico – the mountain in the sea
At 2,351 metres, Pico is the highest mountain in Portugal and at the same time an almost perfect volcanic cone rising directly from the Atlantic. Anyone seeing it for the first time from the ship, how it pierces the clouds and casts its shadow onto the sea, never forgets the sight. The island itself is famous for its vineyards, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site – vines that have grown for centuries in small dry-stone walls and whose wine was exported as far as Tsarist Russia.

Horta on Faial – the most famous sailing harbour in the Atlantic
Anyone sailing the Atlantic arrives in Horta on Faial sooner or later. The small harbour has for centuries been the traditional stopover for transatlantic sailing voyages. Generations of sailors have immortalised themselves on the quayside walls – everyone who passes through paints their boat name, their crest, their story on a stone. Tradition says that whoever ignores the custom will not sail on well. We're not taking any chances.

Right on the harbour sits Peter Café Sport, one of the most legendary sailors' bars in the world. Atlantic sailors have met here for almost a hundred years, pictures of all the great sailing ships hang on the walls, here there's gin and tonic and stories from around the world. A visit is part of the essential programme of any Azores trip.

São Jorge – the island of cliffs and fajãs
Long, narrow, dramatic: São Jorge is one of the most impressive islands in the archipelago. Its steep coastline falls vertically into the sea, and at its foot lie the famous fajãs – small, flat tongues of lava formed by landslides where people have lived for centuries. From the water the island is an experience in itself: a green wall whose waterfalls plunge directly into the sea.

Whale watching from on board
The Azores are considered one of the best whale-watching areas in the world. Even in January, sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins and occasionally orcas can be observed around the islands. The Roald is not a whale-watching boat, but anyone keeping a sharp lookout on watch often sees more than one would on a specialist trip from land. An encounter with a sperm whale in the Atlantic swell alongside the brig is amongst the experiences that stay with you for a lifetime.

Sail training in a special cruising ground
Sailing amongst the Azorean islands is its own chapter of seamanship. Deep water, often strong winds, rapid weather changes between the islands, long passages on the open sea and short, intensive harbour manoeuvres in the small island ports. We sail in watch rotation, anchor where it's beautiful, sometimes go out for longer and sometimes into sheltered bays. An experienced permanent crew teaches you everything you need. Previous experience is helpful but not essential – curiosity, enthusiasm for life on board and willingness to embrace the often capricious Azorean weather are enough.

"Habichtsinseln" – where does the name come from?
The historical German name for the Azores is Habichtsinseln – and it comes directly from the Portuguese. Açores is the Portuguese term for a bird of prey, traditionally translated as hawk (Habicht). When Portuguese seafarers discovered the archipelago in the 15th century, they saw birds circling in the air that they took to be hawks – they were probably buzzards, but the name stuck. To this day the Azores in German are actually called Habichtsinseln, even though the term has almost fallen into oblivion. We're bringing it back on this trip – as a small homage to the old seafarers who anchored here before us.

What to expect
Ten days in the heart of the Atlantic. Volcanic peaks rising from the sea. Vineyards on lava fields. The most famous harbour walls in the sailing world. Sperm whales, dolphins and petrels as constant companions. A crew that quickly forms into a community in the quiet intimacy of this island world. And an archipelago that many travellers search for all their lives.

Come aboard. Sail the Habichtsinseln. Experience the Atlantic at its most beautiful.
