Stralsund lies in Western Pomerania on the Strelasund, the narrow waterway between the mainland and the island of Rügen. This article covers three harbours: the Citymarina on the Nordmole directly in front of the old town, as well as the Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord and the harbour of the Yachtclub Strelasund on the island of Dänholm. Here you'll read how to travel to your trip's departure point, which harbour is where, where to park and shop, what the weather is like in the sailing area, which sailing destinations are nearby and what skippers need to know about the Ziegelgraben Bridge.

The essentials at a glance

  • From Berlin and Hamburg the ICE runs direct to Stralsund Hauptbahnhof, the journey takes just over two and a half hours in each case. From the station to the Citymarina it's around 1.7 kilometres as the crow flies.
  • The Citymarina is open from mid-April to the end of October. Bakers, butchers and shops are in the old town right next door, a car park directly on Seestraße.
  • Between Stralsund and the Dänholm lies the Ziegelgraben Bridge. It opens daily at 5:20, 8:20, 12:20, 15:20, 17:20 and 21:30, during which time road and rail traffic over the Rügendamm causeway is stopped.
  • Short first legs lead northwards towards Hiddensee or southwards through the Strelasund to the Greifswald Bodden.

Which harbours are there in Stralsund?

Stralsund has three harbours for visiting yachts: the Citymarina Stralsund on the north breakwater at the edge of the old town, just under a kilometre to the southeast the Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord and a good kilometre further southeast the harbour of the Yachtclub Strelasund. The Citymarina is on the town side, the other two harbours on the island of Dänholm. In the Ziegelgraben between the town and Dänholm lies the bascule bridge of the Rügendamm: the Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord is to the north of it on the east breakwater, the harbour of the Yachtclub Strelasund in the Alter Marinehafen to the south of it.

Getting to Stralsund for your trip departure

The easiest way to reach Stralsund is by train or by car via the Ostseeautobahn A20. For the last stretch, it matters whether your sailing trip starts at the Citymarina by the old town or on the Dänholm.

From the airport to Stralsund

The nearest airport is Rostock-Laage, around 70 kilometres southwest of Stralsund as the crow flies. From there you continue by hire car via the A20.

The airports in Berlin and Hamburg have more flight connections. From both, the train takes you to Stralsund: from Berlin Hauptbahnhof the fastest ICE without changing takes around 2 hours 40 minutes, the regional trains with one change around 3 hours 20 minutes. From Hamburg Hauptbahnhof the ICE runs without changing in around 2 hours 45 minutes.

By car, train or bus

By car you come from the direction of Berlin via the A11 and at the Uckermark motorway junction onto the A20, from the direction of Hamburg via the A1 to Lübeck and then onto the A20. In both cases you take the Stralsund exit and follow the Rügen feeder road into the city. From Rostock it's around an hour on the A20, from Berlin and Hamburg around two and a half hours each.

The main railway station is on Tribseer Damm west of the old town. To the Citymarina it's around 1.7 kilometres as the crow flies; on foot you walk straight through the old town. With luggage a taxi is more convenient. To the two harbours on the Dänholm you drive over the Rügendamm. While the Ziegelgraben bridge is open for ships, for up to 20 minutes, cars and trains cannot cross the bridge. Bear this in mind if you want to get to the Dänholm shortly after 8:20, 12:20 or 17:20. The Rügendamm also has a footpath and cycle path.

Which harbour is mine?

The Citymarina is in the old town on Seestraße; the harbours on the Dänholm are on the other side of the Ziegelgraben and have different access routes. Therefore give the taxi driver the full name with address: "Citymarina, Seestraße 14 A", "Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord, Liebitzweg 22" or "Yachtclub Strelasund, Zum Kleinen Dänholm 21". Next to the Citymarina is the museum ship Gorch Fock I, which you can see from a distance.

Parking

Directly at the Citymarina is the car park at Seestraße 13, and just a few steps away the multi-storey car park at the harbour at Fährwall 14. There are also park-and-ride spaces, for example at Hexenplatz on Tribseer Damm, the street where the main railway station is. The Yachtclub Strelasund on the Dänholm has its own car park.

Showers and sanitary facilities

The Citymarina has showers as well as a washing machine and tumble dryer in the floating harbour building. You open the toilet and shower facilities with a deposit key; the shower is charged by the minute. The Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord and the Yachtclub Strelasund also have toilet and shower facilities.

Shopping for the trip

From the Citymarina you can reach the old town on foot. There you'll find bakers, butchers, shops, department stores, a post office, banks and pharmacies. Supermarkets are slightly outside the centre: on Frankendamm south of the old town, the road towards the Rügendamm, you'll find a REWE and a Netto supermarket. You also pass there on the way to the Dänholm. For a large shopping trip by car there's another REWE supermarket on Rostocker Chaussee in the west of the city.

Doctor, pharmacy and emergency services

You'll find doctors' surgeries and pharmacies in the city centre.

  • 112: Ambulance service, emergency doctor and fire brigade
  • 110: Police
  • 116 117: out-of-hours medical service
  • 0800 0022833: emergency pharmacy service
  • At sea: VHF channel 16 or DSC on channel 70, call sign "Bremen Rescue Radio", the maritime rescue coordination centre of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS) in Bremen; by telephone round the clock on +49 421 53687-0.

Citymarina Stralsund: berths and facilities

The Citymarina lies on the western shore of the Strelasund in a harbour basin bordered by the north breakwater. It has 300 berths on concrete floating pontoons, roughly half each for permanent and visiting berths, plus a quay for large yachts. Visiting yachts moor at the floating pontoons on the south side of the breakwater in the eastern section or directly at the quay, rafting up if necessary. The pontoons are accessible via hinged gangways and rise and fall with the water level.

The harbour is sheltered from northerly winds, and a breakwater keeps off westerly winds and swell. Next to the marina lies the Gorch Fock I, the 82-metre sailing training ship from 1933. A visitor's berth costs from €24 per night; you can also pay by card (as of October 2026).

The Dänholm Harbours

The Dänholm is a small island in the Strelasund between Stralsund and Rügen. The Rügen causeway and the high Rügen bridge cross over it.

The Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord lies in the north of the island on the Ziegelgraben, directly beneath the Rügen bridge. Eight clubs share around 250 boxes on five pontoons. Free visitor's berths are marked in green, and the harbour master allocates them. The harbour has a crane up to 10 tonnes that visitors can also use, a hand-operated mast crane, a slipway and a small bistro.

The Yachtclub Strelasund has its harbour in the south of the Dänholm. The club, with over 300 members, takes visiting yachts, though boats over 10 metres in length or over 3 metres in breadth only in limited numbers. From both harbours you can reach the old town on foot, by bike or by bus.

What is the weather like for sailing in Stralsund?

Over the year, the wind on the Pomeranian coast mostly comes from west to southwest; in spring, easterly winds blow more frequently. For the coast, the Deutscher Wetterdienst issues a wind warning from 6 Beaufort and a gale warning from 8 Beaufort.

Tides play no role in the Strelasund; the water level is determined by the wind. Sustained northeasterly or easterly wind pushes water into the Sound; strong southwesterly or westerly wind causes it to fall. In the Citymarina the water level varies by up to 1.2 metres.

In late spring, when warm air passes over the still-cold Baltic water, sea fog forms. Visibility can then drop suddenly and sharply.

Which destinations lie near Stralsund?

From Stralsund you can head north through the Strelasund towards Hiddensee and western Rügen, or south through the Ziegelgraben bridge to the Greifswalder Bodden. In both directions you can reach the first harbours in short day sails.

The distances are rounded water distances on the usual course from the Citymarina; for precise planning the chart applies. From the two Dänholm harbours it is up to 1 nm less to the south, up to 1 nm more to the north.

  • Barhöft at the northern exit of the Strelasund: around 8 nm
  • Stahlbrode on the Strelasund: around 9 nm, through the Ziegelgraben bridge
  • Neuendorf on Hiddensee: around 13 nm
  • Vitte on Hiddensee: around 15 nm
  • Kloster on Hiddensee: around 17 nm
  • Greifswald-Wieck: around 20 nm, through the Ziegelgraben bridge
  • Lauterbach bei Putbus (Rügen): around 22 nm, through the Ziegelgraben bridge

For a week's sailing trip a circuit via Hiddensee and the Bodden waters is a good option; in the other direction via the Greifswalder Bodden to Lauterbach and Greifswald. For longer trips, Bornholm, the Danish islands and the Swedish south coast are within reach. You can read more about the harbours on the Greifswalder Bodden in the portrait of the Harbours in Greifswald and Wieck, and about northern Rügen in the article on Breege harbour on Rügen.

What can you do on a harbour day in Stralsund?

From the Citymarina you are in the old town in a few minutes; together with Wismar it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Most sights lie within walking distance.

Stralsund harbour with historic warehouses

  • Old Town and St Nikolai: Brick buildings from the Hanseatic period shape the townscape around the Alter Markt with the Nikolai church. In the evenings, night watchmen lead tours through the alleyways.
  • Gorch Fock I: The sailing training ship from 1933 lies next to the Citymarina and can be visited.
  • Ozeaneum: The marine museum at the harbour was opened in 2008. Humboldt penguins live on the roof terrace.
  • Deutsches Meeresmuseum: It lies in a former monastery in the old town; the 15-metre skeleton of a fin whale is well known.
  • Marinemuseum on the Dänholm: The Dänholm is regarded as the cradle of the Prussian navy. The Marinemuseum lies on the island, close to the two Dänholm harbours.

For skippers: berthing, Ziegelgraben Bridge and marine weather in Stralsund

At Citymarina you report to the harbour master after mooring; at Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord you take a green-marked berth that the harbour master assigns to you. If you are travelling between Stralsund and the Greifswald Bodden, you pass through the Ziegelgraben Bridge only during fixed opening times.

Registration and Berthing

  • Citymarina: The harbour master is available from 7:30 to 10:00 and from 16:30 to 19:00 and speaks German and English. You can request a berth in advance via the marina's contact form or by telephone on 03831 444978. Visitors' berths are located on the pontoons on the south side of the mole and at the quay, where you may raft up when the harbour is full. Electricity and water are charged according to consumption.
  • Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord: Free berths are marked in green, the harbour master assigns you the berth. Telephone 03831 297854 or 01577 2422747.
  • Yachtclub Strelasund: Telephone 03831 297300. For boats over 10 metres in length or over 3 metres in beam there are only a few visitors' berths.

Approach

You can approach Citymarina by day and night, following the buoyage and lights in the Strelasund to the entrance at the north mole.

South of Citymarina the fairway runs through the Ziegelgraben between Stralsund and Dänholm. There the Rügen Bridge with 42 metres clearance height and the Ziegelgraben Bridge, a bascule bridge on the Rügen causeway, cross the water. With mast up you can only pass when the bascule bridge is open.

You reach the two harbours on Dänholm via the fairway in the Ziegelgraben: Wassersportzentrum Dänholm Nord from the north without a bridge, Yachtclub Strelasund from the south from the Strelasund.

When does the Ziegelgraben Bridge open?

The Ziegelgraben Bridge opens daily at 5:20, 8:20, 12:20, 15:20, 17:20 and 21:30, each time for a maximum of 20 minutes. This is according to the Notice to Mariners of the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Ostsee (as at October 2026).

About ten minutes before opening you signal your intention by waiting near the leading marks or at the waiting dolphins. In addition you can give the signal to open, two long blasts. Changes and closures are published by the authority as Notices to Mariners on ELWIS, the information service of the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung.

Which marine weather forecast applies to Stralsund?

The marine weather forecast of the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) for the North Sea and Baltic Sea applies. In addition there are the DWD coastal warnings with wind and storm warnings.

You can read the current report on the DWD sea weather page or in the WarnWetter app. Whilst underway you receive it via VHF coast radio, NAVTEX and on the radio.
