INNER HEBRIDES

“Hav bred ey”, islands on the edge of the sea, was what the Vikings called the storm-lashed Hebrides, which once belonged to their realm. Only around 80 of the more than 500 Hebridean islands are inhabited, and rather sparsely at that. We explore this sailing area aboard a traditional tall ship. It delights all lovers of Scotland and offers incomparable holiday impressions. We discover the islands around Islay and Mull with a well-balanced mix of time sailing at sea, plenty of time for going ashore, and time spent in harbour or at anchor in a sheltered bay.

In Oban, our regular crew welcomes you aboard. Embarkation is at 7 pm. Over a welcome drink and dinner in the deck saloon, you will get to know the crew and your fellow travellers.

Setting a course for the islands of Mull and Islay

The time of departure from Oban depends on the tides. The 25 nautical miles to Tobermory make for a pleasant distance to start the trip. The coastal passage leads through the Sound of Mull, with the island of the same name, the third-largest of the Hebrides, on our port side. On the shore of Mull, Duart Castle sits on a steep cliff, and has been the ancestral seat of Clan Maclean for 700 years. At the far north of the island lies Tobermory, one of the prettiest harbour towns in Scotland. The colourful waterfront is a landmark of the west coast, a picture-postcard idyll of brightly painted houses around a semicircular bay. The many pubs are not the only main attractions of this charming town; there are also the distillery and the Isle of Mull Museum. For over 150 years, Tobermory has had the “Mishnish”, a popular sailors' hangout and “best pub in town”. Our tip for an excursion: at the northern end of the town, follow the walking trails to the lighthouse at Ardmore Point.

Another destination on this trip is Islay, the southernmost of the Hebridean islands. There we find various options for short excursions by dinghy, followed by walks ashore, as well as sheltered bays in which to spend a night at anchor – a very special experience on any sailing voyage!

Visit to a whisky distillery

We plan to visit a local whisky distillery during the voyage. As tours are often only possible with prior registration, please state when booking your sailing trip, in the field “Add a note to your order”, whether you would like to take part in a distillery tour and how many people will be joining.
