Sailing trip in the Saronic Gulf

Frank and his co-skipper Janni are two extremely experienced and cheerful characters. Together with my eight-year-old son, we had a fantastic week on board.

The yacht itself is immaculately maintained, spotlessly clean and offers plenty of space.

Particularly brilliant: Frank explains the tricks of sailing with great patience – tailored to each person's prior knowledge – and actively involves you in the procedures. At the same time, he conveys cultural background and very helpful information about the places visited.

Whether you simply want to relax in the sun or expand your sailing skills as a beginner or advanced sailor: this crew is absolutely recommended!

Janni, I've found the Tsipouro Dekaraki – the next round's on me! 🙂

Another very lovely and interesting sailing trip

The sailing trip was very relaxing and interesting. We visited many beautiful harbours and places in the Saronic Gulf and it was very varied. Unfortunately, the wind was relatively light, but we were still able to sail well where possible. All good and recommended.

Great trip. Everything was spot on.

We had a wonderful trip with Sun Yachting Germany and skipper Arne. Perfect planning and organisation, and consideration for the crew's wishes. We had some difficult harbour manoeuvres which we managed to solve brilliantly thanks to good briefing and instructions from the skipper.
You can tell he has years of sailing experience and excellent knowledge of the sailing area. It was great fun.

A wonderful time on board. Christmas at sea

We had a fantastic sailing trip over Christmas and New Year. Wonderful experiences and beautiful nature and scenery. We sailed to lovely harbours and enjoyed glorious sailing days. The boat was also good and sailed beautifully and briskly.
Arne, our skipper, planned the route with us and involved us in the sailing manoeuvres as much as possible. Anyone who wants to can learn a great deal. His very long experience was to our advantage.
Many thanks for the lovely time on board. We will certainly come along again.

Skipper in the saloon etc

Disappointing! Our two-week sailing trip in the Saronic Gulf with Sun Yachting Germany / Arne Korf (October 2024) was unfortunately anything but the desired mix of relaxation, adventure and sailing experience. We had booked two cabins and expected a well-organised trip with an experienced skipper...as on all our previous cabin charter trips. Instead, we had to discover that the boat was overbooked, which meant that the skipper slept in the saloon and assigned a shared double cabin to two complete strangers (man and woman) – an uncomfortable situation for all concerned. (8 berths sold – both in our first and in our second sailing week on board. So skipper in the saloon = overbooked on an Elan 43 with 4 double cabins, one of which has bunk beds).

Without a clearly communicated route or variety, we sailed almost exclusively from town harbour to town harbour, which dampened the holiday mood. Despite repeated hints from us, hardly any anchorages were visited – just three bays in two weeks, and that only after massive protests from the crew. The skipper's expectation was that we should swim in the town harbours (in this area the seacocks are ALWAYS open in the harbours...including ours).

As for the sailing itself, communication was poor. The skipper made little effort to involve us in the planning or manoeuvres, and offered little opportunity to sail actively or learn anything new. Reefing and basic manoeuvres were never practised. Very unusual – I myself have been sailing for 45 years and have never experienced anything like this. Two women who have been sailing with this skipper for many years were directly assigned the sailing tasks.

At temperatures of 28–30°C the sun beat down mercilessly, yet the bimini was always folded away before departure – despite the prevailing light winds. The crew had to endure the blazing sun, even though a bit of shade would have been easy to provide...at 1.8 kn SOG or under engine.

All in all, this trip met neither our expectations nor the basic standards for a cabin charter. We would not recommend this experience.

All these points were raised during the trip – I even documented this in my logbook. So nobody should say 'we could have talked about it' – we did! Only the answer was always 'I've been doing it this way for 35 years'

The comment on Google Maps from Sun Yacht Charter, Arne Korf, speaks for itself. Anyone who thinks that's fine is welcome to book there. Anyone with questions is welcome to contact me.

Provider's response

Unfortunately Cordula or anyone else in the crew involved did not communicate with the skipper about any 'problems' during the trip. Any possible problems could have been resolved during the trip without difficulty.

The boat was not overbooked!! The skipper only had to sleep in the saloon because Cordula had booked a double cabin for single use for her son, who lay in his own cabin almost all day fiddling with his mobile phone.
There were only 8 people on board with 4 double cabins.

We discussed the allocation of the double cabin to a woman and a man in advance with those concerned and they agreed to this arrangement from the start.
During the trip this cabin allocation could have been changed at any time, but that was not desired and was not requested.

We tell all crew at the start of every trip that they should clearly tell the skipper their wishes regarding the sailing and the trip. The skipper cannot ask every day. However, Cordula and her husband did not do this.

The planned route was discussed every morning after breakfast and sometimes the evening before.
No anchorages were visited on this trip due to wind conditions and the wishes of the rest of the crew. Of course we're happy to visit anchorages when the crew wants to and the situation permits.

Moreover, the harbours in this sailing area cannot be described as 'city ports'. They are mostly small and clean harbours. There were certainly no massive protests from the crew. That is incorrect!

What was booked was a holiday sailing trip where no manoeuvres were to be practised nor any sail training to take place. Cordula did not book a sail training trip! Therefore this criticism is also highly questionable.

We are open to all criticism and use it to improve our trips, but you can't please everyone all the time.

Dream holiday

Super brilliant sailing holiday. With skipper Arne it's simply great fun.
Anyone who wants to sail gets their money's worth, whether beginner or advanced. He'll also sit beside you for hours if you're unsure, or you can talk about navigation and the finer points of sail trim at any time. Just communicate clearly what you want.

The holiday aspect doesn't get short-changed either.

Beautiful little harbours, picture-perfect, delicious food together in the taverna or even an anchorage if everyone's up for it. Along the way you can also discover archaeological sites or simply get to know stunning islands.

Every photo is somehow like a dream postcard.

In the evenings you wind down together with Greek wine and there's plenty of laughter.

However, you mustn't forget that you're spending your holiday in close quarters. Teamwork is required, as well as a certain independence to see what needs doing, whether it's the tack or the washing-up.

Everything is taken care of together and a certain onboard routine quickly develops.

You have to be aware that you'll meet different characters, but that's part of it. I met lots of lovely people and also discovered that there are parents for whom their own child isn't the first priority.
But you have to make the best of that too.
But if you take everyone as they are – everyone has their quirks – you simply have a dream holiday, away from the everyday rush. It's like being beamed out of daily life and mind and body come to rest.

My recommendation: go for a fortnight rather than one week.

Unique trip

I can warmly recommend Sun Yachting Germany to everyone, regardless of how interested you are in sailing. You can get involved on board from just coming along to actively sailing, as much as you like, and thereby have the opportunity to really experience sailing.
The ports of call were also beautifully chosen and not directly at larger tourist resorts. I really liked that, because you got to know the gorgeous landscape and authentic Greek tavernas.
The skipper was very competent and really passionate about it, which rubbed off on the entire crew after a short time, creating a very good atmosphere on board.
All in all I can only warmly recommend Sun Yachting Germany!

Super relaxed sailing holiday

A very relaxed holiday in a very beautiful sailing area with an experienced, level-headed skipper.
We sailed leisurely from place to place (or motored when there was no wind), occasionally we also anchored. It was a very harmonious time together on board, even though most of us didn't know each other. Anyone who wanted to could steer and handle the sheets, but it wasn't compulsory. After all, it's a holiday and not sail training... 😉
In the evenings we went to the taverna together and tried many delicious dishes, or cooked whilst at anchor in a bay (with due attention to safety – wind direction, wind strength and a decent holding ground for anchoring are quite important after all...). Swimming in open water (when calm) or sometimes even in the harbour, the water was so clean and clear!
I would go sailing again any time!!!

Super yacht, top skipper, great route – it's always dependent on the wind, but we always sailed to wonderful places.

Pure sailing and perfect organisation

On my sailing trip in October 2024 I learnt a great deal and got to know the Greek islands wonderfully. A beautiful sailing area.
Our skipper and the yacht were ideal. A really lovely sailing trip.

Great sailing and gained lots of experience.

I have now been sailing regularly with Sun Yachting Germany in Greece for very many years. Every trip has been wonderful and enriching for my sailing knowledge and for getting to know the Greek islands and the sea there.
The skipper knows the area very well through his over 40 years of experience in this sailing area.
This time too we discovered new bays and lovely Greek harbours. No stress and ideal sailing routes. Really highly recommended!
