Sail training from Marina Polesana in Pula Istria (Northern Adriatic)
The sailing area of the Northern Adriatic, particularly around Istria, offers a varied mix of sheltered bays, open waters and charming coastal towns. It is ideal for sail training as it provides both calm sections for manoeuvre practice and more challenging passages. Applied navigation can also be learnt very well here in practice, for example during night passages. The well-developed waters with numerous marinas and anchorages allow for flexible route planning.

Why this sailing area?
The northern Adriatic sailing area offers a perfect blend of challenge and relaxation. With a well-planned route, the 300 nautical miles can be achieved comfortably, whilst covering all important aspects of sail training at the same time. The presence of two experienced skippers ensures safety and effective learning.

Route and destinations
The route is designed to allow practice of many different mooring situations.
Alongside daily sailing and manoeuvring training, we place great emphasis on night passages and approaching different harbours to gain experience with various berthing and departure manoeuvres. The exact route depends on weather conditions and the crew's needs; broadly speaking, the passage can be planned in three directions:

1. Northwards:

Destinations: Slovenian coast (e.g. Portorož), Trieste (Italy) and the northern Istrian coast (e.g. Rovinj).

Features: This route offers the opportunity to sail in the waters of other EU member states and to practise navigation in narrow passages (e.g. off Trieste). The well-lit coastline is ideal for night sailing.

2. Southwards:

Destinations: Kvarner Gulf (e.g. Cres, Lošinj), Rab, Pag and the Dalmatian coast (e.g. Zadar).

Features: Open waters provide perfect conditions for practising seamanship and navigation. The islands of Cres and Lošinj are ideal for practising anchoring manoeuvres and calling at smaller harbours.

3. Westwards:

Destinations: Italian Adriatic coast (e.g. Venice, Lignano, Rimini).

Features: This demanding route requires navigating shallow waters and strong currents. It is ideal for advanced navigation techniques and crossing traffic separation schemes (TSS) with heavy shipping traffic.

Our own sailing yacht is a Beneteau Oceanis 50 Family and offers optimum comfort for small and larger crews.

Capacity: 13 people approx. 4-6 participants on board
Sanitary facilities: 3 + 1 toilets, 3 showers
The yacht will be occupied by a maximum of 6 students.

When a sailing school owns its own training yacht rather than having to charter one, this brings several advantages:
Flexibility and availability – The school can use the yacht at any time without having to consider availability or charter contracts.
Consistency in training – Students learn on a fixed yacht which the instructors know inside out, greatly facilitating familiarisation. With chartered yachts, equipment and handling characteristics can differ, making training more difficult.
Individual equipment – The school can equip and optimise the yacht according to its needs, e.g. with special training materials or safety equipment.
Reputation and brand building – Having one's own yacht signals professionalism and permanence, which strengthens students' trust and sets the school apart from competitors.
Better maintenance and safety – The school can control the yacht's condition itself and ensure it is always in perfect order. Chartered yachts can be in varying states of upkeep.
