Two-week mile building – Gdańsk and the Curonian Spit

From Cape Arkona on Rügen we set course directly for Klaipėda in Lithuania. We now have 280 nautical miles ahead of us, which we can cover in watches and, given favourable weather, in around 3 days.

In Klaipėda, Lithuania's commercial harbour, we will recover during a city tour. The way the residents treat their Klaipėda, the way they cherish and care for this city and identify with it, they have created a contrast to the dreariness of the Kaliningrad region that could hardly be greater.

From there we head into the Curonian Lagoon, with its unique views of the sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, some as high as 80 metres. Via Juodkrantė (Schwarzort), formerly the centre of amber mining, we make our way to Nida (Nidden), with its amber museum, the Thomas Mann House and the Great Dune.

Depending on wind and weather, we sail from here in shorter stages to Gdańsk. In any case, after a stroll through the lovingly restored Old Town, you will understand why Gdańsk is also called the Pearl of the Baltic. Whether it's the Long Market, the Town Hall or the Crane Gate (the symbol of Gdańsk), the venerable Hanseatic city is sure to inspire you. From Gdańsk our route takes us back to Breege on the island of Rügen.

The trip is conducted on a modern GRP sailing yacht, where a bunk is available for each crew member. Each participant receives a mileage certificate on request at the end of the trip.
