Practical catamaran training for sailors with monohull experience

Would you like to learn how to handle a catamaran safely and improve your manoeuvring technique in a targeted way? During the two-day Catamaran Basic training, you will practise the most important harbour and sailing manoeuvres directly on board modern cruising catamarans under the guidance of experienced professional skippers. The training is aimed at sailors with some sailing experience who want to learn about the special characteristics of a catamaran and gain practical confidence for future skipper or crew roles.

What awaits you

During the training you will work intensively on the most important manoeuvres and fundamentals of catamaran sailing:

Harbour manoeuvres under motor
Picking up and leaving moorings
Springing in on a spring and bow line
Buoy manoeuvres
Safe anchoring
Setting, trimming and reefing sails
Manoeuvring in confined spaces
Fender and line handling
Fundamentals of seamanship
Technical characteristics of catamarans
Practical tips and professional know-how for everyday chartering

Training takes place on modern catamarans between 38 and 46 feet in length. The yachts are no more than seven years old and offer ideal conditions for effective training.

Schedule
Arrival & getting to know each other

The training begins on the evening before with a relaxed get-together on board. After a brief introduction, you will meet the crew, move into your cabin and get your first impressions of the catamaran.

Day 1: Manoeuvre training and catamaran practice

On the first training day we head straight out onto the water. You will learn how to handle the catamaran and gain insights into its technical features, steering behaviour and special characteristics compared with a monohull yacht.

The practical training includes the following topics:

Harbour and berthing manoeuvres
Mooring manoeuvres
Anchoring and picking up buoys
Setting and stowing sails
Reefing techniques in practice

In the evening we enjoy the special atmosphere of the Istrian coast together. A shared dinner with regional specialities rounds off the first training day. Vegetarian and vegan options are of course also available.

Day 2: Consolidation and safety training

The second day is entirely devoted to revision and consolidation. Each participant practises the most important manoeuvres several times under real conditions to gain routine and confidence.

In addition, we work on:

Line handling and line throwing
Slow-speed techniques
Fender management
Precise manoeuvring
Practical seamanship for skipper and crew

After the training we return to base in the early afternoon.

Who is the training suitable for?

This training is aimed at active sailors between 18 and 70 years of age who already have experience on sailing yachts and are planning to switch to a catamaran or wish to expand their knowledge.

The training is particularly suitable for:

future catamaran skippers
charter clients before their first catamaran trip
crew members who want to take an active role on board
sailors with monohull experience who want to get to know the special characteristics of a catamaran

German- and English-speaking participants are equally welcome.
