In spring, conditions for North Atlantic passages are ideal: this leg takes us from the Azores, in the middle of the North Atlantic, in one great leap to Lisbon. After taking on supplies and a shore excursion on São Miguel, we set direct course for the Portuguese mainland – genuine blue-water sailing on long legs, with navigation, night watches and a shared boat routine. The northern route is renowned for fresh westerly and north-westerly winds, ocean fauna and a unique feeling of vastness.

Trip

Our adventure begins in spring in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, the main island of the Azores. After boarding, a thorough safety briefing and provisioning together, we use the time to get to know the crew and prepare the boat for the ocean leg. Once everything is ready, we set course for Lisbon. Around 900 nautical miles of open North Atlantic lie ahead: we navigate through changing winds, work in watches, trim sails, monitor the weather, cook together and grow closer as a crew. After making landfall on the Portuguese coast, the leg ends in the port of Lisbon.

Wind & climate

In spring we can expect ideal conditions on the classic northern route:

Wind: frequently from west to north-west, 4–6 Bft. (15–25 knots)

Air temperature: 18–25 °C by day, cool at night

Water temperature: 18–23 °C

Atlantic: Longer, benign swell (1–3 m)

Weather: mostly dry and clear, rain showers are rare and brief

The yacht

Our beautiful GALINI is a very fast, large and comfortable yacht. She was in the Caribbean over the winter and is crossing the Atlantic in April/May.

She is a modern Hanse 575 with 4 double cabins and a skipper's cabin. Each cabin has its own head with electric toilet. Wi-Fi via Starlink (optional), multimedia, generator 220 V / 7 KW (230 V in all cabins), washing machine, air fryer and coffee machine. She has large solar panels, radar, AIS, a watermaker, hydraulic bathing platform and a dinghy with outboard motor. A comprehensive array of safety and navigation equipment and much more besides – in short, everything you need to be self-sufficient on the go without needing to call at a provisioning harbour. A yacht that meets the highest standards for safety, design and comfort.

The sailing characteristics are outstanding too! The Hanse was designed by Volvo Ocean racers and is the fastest yacht in her class. Sailing pleasure guaranteed!

Additional costs

Ship's kitty (food, diesel, final cleaning etc.): approx. €250 per week per person. On the Atlantic crossing there are hardly any harbour fees (hardly any harbours), so the ship's kitty is lower than in the Mediterranean.
