Ocean sailing from Sal Cape Verde – Horta Azores

Upon your arrival on the island of Sal, you travel to the village of Palmeira. The ship lies at anchor in the harbour. You will be brought aboard by tender. The crew welcomes you, and you meet your fellow travellers. Before departure, you receive an introduction to life on board, safety procedures and an instruction in navigating a three-master. Aboard the 'Oosterschelde', you are part of the crew.
We leave Cape Verde and set course northwest, sailing close-hauled. During the first few days we remain in the trade wind belt, with steady and often strong northeasterly winds. There's plenty of activity on deck: sails are set and trimmed, and we take turns at the helm. Under the crew's guidance, you learn navigation, course plotting and weather interpretation.
The watch system creates a steady rhythm on board. During the day, activity and rest alternate, whilst the night watches have their very own atmosphere. With the compass light before you and the stars above, you steer the ship across the ocean, surrounded by the sounds of wind and water against the hull.
The further north we sail, the more the weather changes. The winds shift, temperatures drop and conditions become more unsettled. This requires attention on deck and frequent sail adjustments. The ship responds immediately to every change, and you experience this first-hand.
Despite the distance from the mainland, there is abundant life around us: seabirds, dolphins, flying fish and possibly whales as we approach the Azores. Gradually land appears, and we enter the harbour of Horta, a well-known meeting place for sailors from all over the world.
We want this voyage to be accessible to all, yet a sea voyage aboard a sailing ship can be challenging, and you must be sufficiently fit and healthy for it. We divide all voyages into three difficulty levels, marked with a symbol showing one, two or three waves. Not every difficulty level suits everyone. The shipping company may contact you to discuss your participation. In extreme cases, the shipping company may advise against participation in a particular voyage.
