Trip description:

Following the success of last year's voyages through the Norwegian fjords, the Santa Maria Manuela returns to offer more guests the opportunity to experience this extraordinary coast aboard a historic tall ship.

Our voyage begins in Ålesund, where Art Nouveau buildings line the waterfront and mountains rise behind the town.

From there we sail into the fjords and watch the landscape draw closer as the open coastal waters give way to steep mountainsides, waterfalls and small settlements along the shore.

Ålesund stretches across a group of islands and is renowned for its Art Nouveau architecture, built following a devastating town fire in 1904. Turrets, ornate façades and colourful waterfront houses make the town a rewarding destination to explore on foot.

Fishing still shapes daily life, and the harbour is an ideal spot to get a feel for the town's atmosphere.

For a comprehensive view it's worth climbing Mount Aksla; from there the vista sweeps across the rooftops, the surrounding islands and the distant mountains.

Back down by the water, cafés, small shops and numerous squares invite you to linger.

Thanks to the small group on board, you'll quickly get to know both the crew and your fellow travellers.

Between ports you can take the helm alongside the crew, exchange stories over a meal or find a quiet spot on deck.

There's time to enjoy both the company and the scenery – making the days on board as important a part of the holiday as the places we visit.

Now we make way for Geiranger.

In Geiranger, enjoy the imposing sight of the sheer rock faces from the deck before going ashore to explore the area.

Geiranger lies at the head of one of Norway's most spectacular fjords, surrounded by steep mountains and waterfalls.

Arriving by ship, you have time to take in the immense scale of the landscape – with isolated farms perched high above the water on the slopes.

The village is small enough to explore on foot, whilst walking trails and excursions lead into the surrounding countryside.

Follow the waterfall path through the village or seek out a viewpoint to enjoy the vista of the fjord stretching between the mountains.

After Geiranger, sails are set for Olden.

Olden offers a different perspective with green valleys and mountain scenery extending inland.

Olden is a small village at the head of the Nordfjord, where farmland and timber houses spread out before steep mountain slopes.

It's a peaceful place for walks, where the landscape shifts within a short distance from the waterside into a green valley.

Further inland, Lake Oldevatnet and the Briksdal Glacier draw visitors into the Oldedalen valley.

If you prefer to remain near the ship, you can explore the village and its churches – always with views of the surrounding mountains.

The captain welcomes you "Welcome aboard the Santa Maria Manuela!"
Relaxed time in the evenings on board

Help the crew handle the sails, try your hand at the helm or simply relax on deck and watch the sea stretch to the horizon.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and our crew will be on hand to assist you at all times.

There are many opportunities to lend a hand. Help the crew set the sails, take the helm or keep watch on the horizon as the ship heads north-east. No sailing experience is required, and participation is always voluntary.

Between manoeuvres you can find a favourite spot on deck, browse a book or chat unhurriedly with other guests.

Away from everyday bustle there is time to notice the smaller things: the changing colours of the water, the sound of wind in the rigging and the first lights appearing along the coast.

Whether you want to get hands-on or prefer to relax and watch the activity – there's room on board for active learning as well as quiet moments of reflection.

Further south, our route leads to Flåm, situated at the head of the Aurlandsfjord; there you can use your time ashore for a stroll by the water or explore the area at your own pace.

Use the time between ports to take the helm together with the crew, get to know your fellow travellers or find a quiet spot on deck and enjoy the passing scenery.

Some of the most unforgettable moments cannot be planned: a suddenly appearing waterfall, a tiny farmhouse at the foot of a steep rock face or the evening light gently resting on the mountains.

Our voyage ends in Bergen, where the colourful wooden houses of Bryggen welcome us to a city shaped by seafaring for centuries.

Stay a little longer to explore the alleyways and harbour, or take a trip into the surrounding hills for a last glimpse of the Norwegian coast.

Bergen has welcomed ships and traders for centuries.

The city's maritime history is best experienced in Bryggen: there, colourful wooden houses line the harbour, whilst narrow lanes lead to small shops and workshops.

Explore the streets with their wooden houses beyond the waterfront, visit the fish market or take the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen.

From up there you can see how tightly the city is nestled between mountains and sea, and forest paths offer a welcome opportunity to escape the bustling activity in the centre.

weather conditions

Late May brings long days with plenty of daylight to the Norwegian fjords, along with mild afternoons and cool evenings.

Sunshine can quickly turn to rain, and on deck it often feels colder than on land.

Pack warm layered clothing, a fleece jacket and a windproof and waterproof jacket – plus comfortable, non-slip shoes for exploring the harbours.

Embrace the adventure of traditional seafaring and experience a very special sailing voyage aboard the "Santa Maria Manuela"!

And if you have any questions: we look forward to hearing from you 🙂
