The Short Range Certificate is the restricted marine radio certificate for VHF radio equipment in terrestrial maritime radio. It authorises participation in the maritime radio service within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) for VHF on sports boats, i.e. a range of approximately 30 nautical miles. This is usually sufficient for charter yachts in the Baltic Sea, North Sea or Mediterranean. The SRC meets GMDSS standards and with the knowledge gained it is possible to direct a distress call to the correct recipient quickly and safely via digital data transmission in the simplest way, so that search and rescue can be initiated quickly and easily. On board yachts with radio equipment, possession of the corresponding radio certificate is mandatory.
If your vessel is equipped with MF/HF equipment or satellite radio, the LRC is required. This includes the SRC. Both certificates are internationally and indefinitely valid. For inland waterway radio, the UBI-Funkzeugnis is required.

The training provides all the necessary facts to enable routine participation in VHF marine radio traffic afterwards. The fundamentals of radio technology, legal provisions, the GMDSS system, working with the radio service for small craft and sports shipping, and the English standard radio phrases as well as the international phonetic alphabet are taught. Particular emphasis is placed on conducting radio traffic – transmitting distress messages and the subsequent distress traffic, as well as safety, urgency and routine traffic, and dealing with false alarms and procedures when receiving a distress call. The aim is for each student to be confident in operating radio equipment and with radio traffic procedures by the end of the course.
During the course you will receive a manual and practice software (included in the price), so that additional teaching materials are not required. Should sufficient English knowledge not be available, we will also take thorough care of this. The SRC does not authorise participation in inland waterway radio. A laptop and English knowledge are advantageous but not essential.

Theory training comprises approximately 14 hours.
