The SKS is a voluntary official licence valid within 12 nautical miles of the coast. It is recognised internationally by charter companies and serves as proof of competence to insurers. The SKS is mandatory for skippering commercially used pleasure craft in coastal waters up to 12 nautical miles. The SKS can be taken either for motor yachts (under power only) or for sailing yachts (under power and sail).
The SKS examination consists of a theory and practical part, which can be completed within two years. We offer SKS sail training through our partner "Yachtsport Greubel & Morys GmbH" with examination at the end.
See: www.greubel-morys.de
Requirements
Minimum age 16 years
Sportbootführerschein-See
For the practical examination: proof of 300 nautical miles experience on yachts in coastal waters
We recommend completing the SKS theory examination before the practical examination.
For the SKS course for motor yachts, prior knowledge of the SBF-See is sufficient.
The SKS course for sailors builds on the knowledge of the Sportbootführerschein-Binnen under sail. Although the Sportbootführerschein-Binnen under sail is not a formal admission requirement for the SKS examination, we must assume comparable practical and theoretical knowledge for the SKS tuition. As a "sailing beginner" we recommend you complete at least a practical basic sailing course and acquire the theoretical foundation through self-study. Even better would be to complete the "Sportbootführerschein-Binnen unter Segeln" or the "VDS Segelschein Jolle/offenes Kielboot".
Theory course content
Navigation (nautical publications, navigation instruments, terrestrial position fixing, checking the deviation table, distance measurement, double bearings, leeway, tidal stream corrections, constructing the tidal stream triangle, electronic navigation and tide theory). Seamanship (equipment, seaworthiness, manoeuvring, anchoring, safety, heavy weather manoeuvres, behaviour in emergency situations, etc.), maritime law (logbook and ship's papers, mandatory equipment, flag etiquette, marine accident investigation, maritime traffic law, KVR, SeeSchStrO) and meteorology (terminology, clouds, pressure systems, land and sea breezes, interpretation of marine weather reports, weather rules, fog, sea state, meteorological instruments).
examination
The SKS theory examination can, if desired, also be completed in two parts — "Written part" and "Chart work" — at different times. This also applies to any resit examination, which need only be taken for the failed part of the theory. All theory examination parts must be completed within two years. The practical examination must take place within two years of the theory examination.
For practical SKS training our partner company "Yachtsport Greubel & Morys GmbH" offers sailing trips in the Baltic Sea. At the end of each sail training, the SKS practical examination is available.
Theory course dates
The tuition takes place as a live webinar, either over eight evenings, from 7.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. each, or over two weekends, from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. each.
Course no.: SKS1226
Mon 30.11.2026, Mon 07.12., Mon 14.12., Mon 21.12., Mon 11.01.2027, Mon 18.01., Mon 25.01., Mon 01.02., each from 19:00 to 22:00 Live webinar*
The course takes place as a live webinar via the internet. We use the same PowerPoint presentations as in our face-to-face teaching. Interaction is ensured through speakers, microphone, webcam, chat function, visualiser, digital whiteboard, etc. Participation is very simple: you need a PC (laptop or tablet) with internet connection and a current browser, as well as speakers and microphone (or headset). A webcam would be ideal but is not essential.
The individual webinar sessions are recorded and made available to participants the following day as MP4 videos. This has the advantage that missed sessions can be caught up, or certain passages can be reviewed.
