The perfect cabin charter complete package
My wife and I (mid-30s), plus father-in-law who taught us inland sailing, are planning to take the necessary steps to realise our dream of living on the water (at least temporarily) with our own boat.
To get a taste of it and also to test my wife's sea legs, we were looking for a suitable introduction through cabin charter offers. With so many offers available, I was always concerned that with many fellow sailors there might be limited consideration for possible seasickness. That's why it quickly became clear to me that for this first attempt, we ideally shouldn't have any other crew members with us as a group, so that our needs could be fully catered for.
What can I say? – When I came across the TripleC advert, it didn't take long before booking, and now that I'm back home, I'm still happily basking in the still-fresh memories 🙂
But now in detail:
The boat:
It's simply just as beautiful, pristine, modern, well-maintained and spotlessly clean right down to the last corner and beautifully decorated as the (unfortunately very few) photos on the homepage suggest. @Heiko: You could perhaps upload a few more pictures here, there's nothing to hide 😉
Also so wonderfully spacious, sunbathing areas on the foredeck, in the saloon (inside) and outside/aft/port/starboard 😀 There were 5 of us on board in total and theoretically you could almost completely avoid each other if you wanted to 😀
Technically equipped with every creature comfort for living: kitchen with everything that goes with it (although Liya enchanted us here, but more on that later), we only ever helped ourselves to cold drinks here (there would always have been something for snacking too, but things like hunger didn't really come up during the week thanks to Liya 😀).
The port hull, our domain 🙂 My wife and I were in the aft cabin, huge extremely comfortable double bed. Felt even bigger than I'd imagined. Perhaps because you can't fall out at the sides. My father-in-law made himself comfortable in the forward cabin with the slightly smaller bed. Each cabin has its own toilet & shower – complete privacy! Also worth mentioning, the cabins smell wonderful. Everything is well ventilated. Nothing stuffy or damp and musty, as it can certainly be on other boats.
The sailing:
For our sailing week, a week of dead calm was forecast just before the start – fortunately everything turned out quite differently 😀
Apart from occasional calm, weather-wise we were able to experience quite a range, up to over 30 knots of wind and good waves. Most of the time, though, we had pleasant conditions with around 15 knots, even if not always from the desired direction, so there was a lot of tacking, but we didn't just want a relaxing holiday, we also wanted to learn something, and here Heiko really scores! Everything I'd learned so far in theory regarding 'good seamanship', I was able to experience in practice with Heiko. Thoughtful, confident, always appropriately mindful of safety, clear, firm instructions, with the gift of radiating friendliness and calm whilst doing so – anyone who pays attention here can take away a lot, not just in terms of sailing but also as a person!
With the sailing in general, the same applies here: everything is optional, nothing is compulsory. Anyone who wants to laze about for a week gets ferried around by Heiko. Anyone who wants to learn something gets fully involved. Everyone is assigned the tasks they feel confident doing, everything is discussed in detail. And if something still went wrong, the skipper remained calm and even looked for the 'fault' in himself, because it probably 'wasn't explained well enough' (Heiko, believe me, sometimes it's also on the receiving end 😀). Nevertheless, thumbs up for this self-reflective, self-critical approach. You can tell exactly that you always want to get better – a great character trait!
The catering:
Here too, our expectations were simply completely exceeded! We'd booked the 'catering option' because it sounded so appealing on the homepage (and we're so lazy^^), not having to make a big shop first (at 30°C in the shade).
The description stated matter-of-factly that 'breakfast and a snack at lunchtime' were included – talk about underselling it 😀
My expectation was: a slice of bread in the morning and a banana at lunchtime – far from it.
A typical morning, when we early risers had tumbled out first once again, began with us lying on the cushions on the foredeck at anchor with the rising sun and gazing at the sea for a while (incidentally: the week was a real safari 😀 Besides flying fish and dolphins, we even saw a huge sea turtle that waved at us whilst swimming on its back – I'm digressing again..., just wanted to say it's always worth looking at the sea). So whilst we're lying on the foredeck, at some point behind us the 'windscreen' to the saloon usually opens and as if by magic the first coffee is already being handed outside 🙂 Words can't describe how good this first coffee tastes, out there with a 360° sea view and gentle rocking and lapping of the sea.
Even before this first coffee is finished, the aroma of breakfast preparation is already wafting up your nose. Here too, all wishes are catered for. Since we as omnivores hadn't expressed any special requests, it was extremely varied and abundant. To list just a few things: all kinds of egg preparations, omelette, fried, scrambled,... Muesli, yoghurts, honey, fruit, sandwiches, croissants, coffee, tea, juices, etc. etc. No wish was left unfulfilled.
About the 'little lunch snack': I've just read the homepage again. You understaters really do write it like that 🙂 I'll just let it slip now: Liya, the lovely soul, simply cooked up something gigantic and delicious every single day! Here too, abundant and varied, simply super tasty! Meat, fish, pasta, Asian specialities, burgers, always with delicious salads too, and dessert, and and and... (even freshly caught fish!! – What you experience in a single week with you... You can tell from reading this that I'm processing the holiday myself right now 😀 sorry for all the typing!)
In the evenings we then usually went ashore together to a restaurant and afterwards back to the boat to wind down – the anchor beer couldn't be missed either – lovely rituals at sea 😀
I'll keep it brief: we were in Greece for two weeks, one week of which with you, and each of us put on nearly 5 kg 😀 Nobody starves with you 😉
The owner couple:
Perhaps the most important point, because working well together certainly has a major impact on the atmosphere on board.
From the pre-trip chat I already had a certain inkling/hope about what kind of people we'd be dealing with. When Heiko then picked us up with his dinghy, my hope was quickly confirmed. On an interpersonal level relaxed and witty, a good and healthy attitude to life, clear values and above all from the rare breed of "independent thinkers", which is what makes good conversations possible in the first place. At the same time, as already mentioned above, enormously professional when it comes to sailing and safety. After arriving on board and briefly stowing our luggage, we had the obligatory safety briefing and also got to meet Liya on board. Alongside our sailing adventure, it was also wonderful to see how this owner couple interact with each other. Since I myself am planning to move onto the water with my wife in a few square metres, I observed the two of them closely from this perspective as well. As a guest you almost forget that they're not just spending sailing holidays with us, they live and work on this boat. Like Heiko, Liya is an extremely interesting person who has already experienced a great deal and radiated more than anyone else on board a sense that life is above all about living in the here and now and enjoying the moment. She brings even more lightness to everyday life on board and as a guest you really get the feeling of being at home. After a week of growing ever closer together, it was a strange feeling to leave the boat and I very much hope that our paths will cross again some day 🙂
From the heart, many thanks for this unforgettable week, all the best to you both going forward
wish you Schorschi, Lara and Oli
