Fèis Ìle – The Islay Festival
Fèis Ìle, the famous Islay Festival, is the annual highlight for whisky lovers from all over the world. Each year in the last week of May and early June, the Scottish island of Islay becomes the vibrant centre of the whisky world for ten days. Whisky fans from around the globe gather here for masterclasses, expert talks, exclusive bottlings, outstanding live music and regional culinary specialities. Fèis Ìle is a celebration of Islay itself: its culture, its history and, of course, its whisky.
The Thalassa Whisky Festival voyage has now become firmly established. The proven combination of sailing and whisky, the lively festival atmosphere on Islay and the peace and expanse of the open sea is a reason for many guests to return time and again. Would you like to know more about this special voyage? In the trip description we give you an impression of possible routes and stops. The departure and destination harbours are fixed.
Itinerary: an outline of possibilities
The Thalassa's festival voyage begins on Saturday, 29 May 2027. You can board in the harbour of Oban from 4:00 pm. After you have met the ship, the crew and your fellow travellers, Thalassa sets course for Islay.
Note: Weather permitting, we anchor overnight at the pier at Bruichladdich. In gales or heavy seas we move to a more sheltered berth on Islay.
Bruichladdich's Rock 'n Daal and Jura
On Sunday you will already see from a distance – and within walking distance – the chalk-white building with the light blue lettering of the Bruichladdich distillery. The rainbow-coloured letters of Bruichladdich's Rock 'n Daal Festival gleam beside the first waiting visitors at the entrance.
Rock 'n Daal traditionally marks the brilliant start of the festival voyage: exclusive festival bottlings, magnificent live music on a large stage and a wide selection of food trucks with regional specialities.
Fortified with whisky and fresh food, we then cross to Jura and find a berth for the night at Bunnahabhain or Port Askaig.
Port Askaig and Port Ellen
On Monday our whisky relay begins at Caol Ila distillery, where the whisky festival is taking place at this time. In the afternoon Thalassa sails on to Port Ellen. Guests can choose whether to stay on board or travel overland (by bus or car).
On Tuesday we visit the festival at Laphroaig. Visits to other distilleries such as Ardbeg and Lagavulin are also possible.
Port Ellen remains the ship's berth on Wednesday too. On this day the festival events take place at Bowmore and Ardnahoe, accessible by public transport or taxi.
Campbeltown, Arran and return to Oban
On Thursday we set course northwards. Our route may take us back to Jura or Bunnahabhain, where we can spend the night in the sheltered bay at the distillery. But perhaps the wind will carry us further: to an anchorage at Tarbert on Jura, in search of puffins around the island of Staffa, or for a final brief festival visit on Jura or at Bunnahabhain. Wind and weather determine our way – for we must begin the return journey in good time.
Fèis Ìle now lies behind us. On Friday we take time to reflect on this special week as we set course on the return passage for our departure harbour of Oban. In the evening we toast a successful voyage at the Captain's Dinner – Slàinte!
On Saturday guests disembark between 8:00 am and 10:00 am.
