We leave London via the Thames and set course for the Dutch coast. The trip takes us through the extensive Thames estuary and across the North Sea to IJmuiden on the doorstep of Amsterdam. Tides, currents and heavy shipping traffic make this passage particularly varied.

At the start we experience London once more from the water. With Tower Bridge behind us, we sail down the Thames until the city slowly disappears and the river opens out into the North Sea.

Depending on wind, weather and how the trip develops, we also sail at night using a watch system. Everyone on board is involved in navigation, weather observation, sail handling and ship management. Tidal planning, navigating the Thames estuary and the heavily trafficked shipping lanes of the North Sea offer many opportunities to gain practical experience.

Initial experience in yacht sailing is an advantage, but not a prerequisite. What matters are team spirit, reliability and the willingness to participate actively in life on board. The trip is suitable for anyone who wants to build sea miles and expand their knowledge of tidal and coastal navigation.

At the end of April, the weather on the North Sea can be changeable. Sunny and calm periods are just as possible as strong winds, cooler temperatures and rain showers. The exact route and any intermediate stops therefore depend on the current conditions.

We sail on a 43-foot Beneteau Oceanis. The yacht has three double cabins and one cabin with a bunk bed. Her sailing characteristics and comprehensive safety equipment make her a good yacht for demanding coastal and offshore passages.
