Let the wind guide you – and discover the magic of the Hebrides.

Hiking is one of the most beautiful ways to experience rugged and unspoilt Scotland. The mainland offers the well-known long-distance trails, but those seeking true peace, wide open spaces and wild beauty travel further west: to the Inner and Outer Hebrides.

There awaits a world of deserted beaches, cosy villages, mysterious landscapes and sweeping vistas – ideal for exploring on foot.

During our walking and sailing adventure aboard the tallship Thalassa, we combine the best of both worlds. By day we sail (short) legs between the islands – depending on wind and tides. At each place we call at, you can choose between one or more beautiful walking routes, alone or together with other guests.

Joining us on board is walking guide Gerard Spaans. He knows the islands like few others and supports you daily in selecting a route that suits your preferences: a challenging hill walk, a relaxed coastal stroll or something in between. You'll receive route maps, brief descriptions and – if desired – GPX files for your navigation app or GPS device.

Would you rather set off on your own? That too is entirely possible. Our guests are always free to explore the surroundings independently. Nothing is compulsory, everything is possible – exactly as it should be on an adventure voyage.

The sailing voyage begins in Oban, Scotland and ends in Oban, Scotland.

The wind determines our route, but the following examples already give you an impression of the landscapes and walking opportunities you can expect.

Oban – the start of an adventure voyage amongst the islands

Our voyage begins in the friendly harbour town of Oban, where fishing boats come and go and the scent of the sea is always in the air. Those arriving a day early can stretch their legs straight away: a walk up to McCaig's Tower offers beautiful views, as do the hills and bays around the town. Once we cast off with Thalassa, it feels as though we're leaving the world behind and heading into the unknown – the true start of a sailing adventure.

Mull – colourful Tobermory and unspoilt nature

If we follow the wind northward, the beautiful island of Mull is often our first port of call. In Tobermory, brightly painted houses line the waterfront like a watercolour. From here, you have two very different walks to choose from:
– a relaxed coastal route with views of the rugged Ardnamurchan Peninsula;
– or a circular walk through Aros Park with quiet woods, waterfalls and hidden viewpoints.
After the walk, the old church, now The Gallery, beckons with excellent coffee, tea and local baking – particularly popular with walkers.

Tiree – island of space, light and stillness

If the wind brings us to Tiree, we step into a landscape that may at first seem empty – but those who take their time soon discover the magic of simplicity. During a longer walk, the island reveals its secrets: the Ringing Stone, a mysterious sounding stone; the remains of Dun Mor Broch, an ancient defensive tower; and above all that endless openness so typical of the Hebrides. Tiree is the island where space itself seems to breathe.

Colonsay – rugged, varied and a favourite of our guide

Colonsay is among the personal favourite islands of our walking guide Gerard Spaans – and with good reason. Deserted beaches, quiet woods and craggy rocks alternate here in beautiful rhythm. You can walk along old fishing settlements or opt for a more challenging ascent of two hilltops. Those who reach the heights are rewarded with panoramic views over Islay, Jura and far beyond.

Iona – quiet contemplation and centuries-old spirituality

If the wind takes us to Iona, we reach one of Scotland's most spiritual places. Despite the many visitors the island attracts each year, the atmosphere remains calm and almost mystical.

You can choose a northern or southern walk or simply enjoy the stillness around the ancient abbey and the surrounding bays. Iona invites you to pause – to slow down in the peace of the Hebrides.

Staffa – a natural wonder in the rhythm of the sea

When wind and swell permit, we make a short detour to the uninhabited island of Staffa. There are no paths here, no inhabitants – only the impressive basalt columns and, in suitable swell, the fascinating Fingal's Cave. We go ashore by tender. The visit is never long, yet for many guests it becomes one of the most magical moments of the voyage.

Islay – whisky island with space and character

Islay is world-famous for its distilleries, but also offers beautiful walking routes and a very distinctive island atmosphere. In good weather we call at one of several possible landing places. From Port Ellen you can start walking on foot or take the bus to Bowmore – perhaps combined with a fine whisky tasting.

Arran – "Scotland in miniature"

The ever-surprising island of Arran brings together almost all of Scotland in a small space: mountains, forests, beaches and rivers. During a hike you may even be lucky enough to spot deer or reindeer. The landscape's variety makes Arran one of the highlights of the voyage for many walkers.

The mainland beckons too

Sometimes the wind takes us back to the mainland, perhaps to Crinan, the picturesque starting point of the historic canal through Mull and Kintyre, or to Campbeltown, a lively harbour town. Both places offer excellent walking opportunities and surprising views over land and sea.

Our voyage ends in Oban, a vibrant coastal town with cosy pubs, an atmospheric harbour and a breathtaking view from McCaig's Tower over the bay.

A perfect place to round off an unforgettable sailing voyage along one of Europe's most beautiful coastlines.

Here the crew of "Thalassa" bid you farewell and hope that this special combination has given you a lasting sailing and walking experience.
