Brigg & Blauwasser – Atlantische Weiten
Santa Cruz de La Palma (Canary Islands) – Ponta Delgada São Miguel (Azores)

Sunday, 3 January – Saturday, 16 January 2027

Reduced: €1375 | Adults: €1960

Fourteen days of true blue-water sailing. From the Canary Islands right into the North Atlantic to the volcanic islands in the ocean's Mediterranean – the Azores. A trip for everyone who wants to experience the open sea in all its vastness.

There are sailing areas you get to know, and there are sailing areas that change you. The open North Atlantic in winter belongs to the second kind. On this trip we're not island-hopping, not doing day trips, not slaloming along a coast. We set course for the open sea and sail almost a thousand nautical miles north-eastward – through one of Europe's largest and loneliest stretches of water. When after days at sea we first make out the green silhouette of an Azorean island on the horizon, it's a moment that stays with you.

Departure from La Palma
We leave the harbour of Santa Cruz de La Palma and set course for the open Atlantic. The island gradually disappears behind us over the horizon, and after a short time there's nothing beneath the keel but deep, blue water. Ahead of us: a thousand nautical miles of ocean.

Blue-water sailing in its purest form
What makes the Atlantic passage towards the Azores so special is exactly what makes it so appealing to many: the absence of anything that might distract you along the way. No islands on the horizon, no harbours, no resupply from outside. Just the ship, the crew, the sea and the sky.

Roald becomes your home during these days. You experience how life aboard settles into a calm rhythm – watches, meals, sleep, watches. You learn what it means to read the world only from water, clouds and stars. You observe how the sky changes from day to day, how the wind shifts, how the sea changes its mood – and how the compass steadily guides you further north-eastward.

Encounters on the open sea
Even on the emptiest stretch of Atlantic you're never entirely alone. Petrels and albatrosses often accompany the ship for days. Pods of dolphins shoot along the bow. And if you're lucky, you'll see in the distance the blow of a whale – the route between the Canary Islands and the Azores lies right on one of Europe's most important migration routes for great whales. Moonrises over the open sea, sunsets that bathe half the ship in golden light, and nights beneath a starlit sky without any light pollution – these are experiences that define these days.

Arrival at São Miguel – the green main island of the Azores
After days at sea it first appears as a shadow, then ever more clearly: São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores. We enter Ponta Delgada, the lively capital with its elegant white town front, the black basalt stones in the pavements and the palpable blend of Portuguese culture and Atlantic mentality.

The Azores are different from anything you've experienced on a trip before. They lie in the middle of the Atlantic, far from any continent, and bear the marks of their volcanic origins at every turn. Hot springs, crater lakes in every shade of blue, dense laurel forests, rugged cliffs and gentle green pastures – as if Hawaii and Ireland had had a child together. Despite the northern latitude, the climate is mild even in January: an effect of the warm Gulf Stream and the far-reaching Atlantic high-pressure systems that derive their name from here – the Azores High.

Sail Training on a Long Passage
On this trip we sail throughout in a three-watch system. You're part of the crew – with everything that entails: setting and furling sails, taking the helm, keeping lookout, navigation, watch handovers in the morning and at night. Fourteen days on the Atlantic are more than the sum of individual manoeuvres. They're a maturing process that helps you grow aboard – as a sailor, as a person, in the community with your watch mates. An experienced permanent crew will teach you everything you need. Previous experience is helpful but not essential. What matters is enthusiasm for life aboard, the willingness to commit to an extended time at sea, and the openness to be changed by a major Atlantic voyage.

What to expect
Fourteen days of true ocean sailing. A thousand nautical miles of blue water. Starlit skies without light pollution. Whales, dolphins, seabirds. A crew that becomes a community. And at the end an island that rises from the water after days at sea like a promise.

Come aboard. Sail the vastness. Arrive in a different world.
