Portugal in the Atlantic 2027 – Sailing the Roald Amundsen from the Azores to Madeira
Wednesday, 27 January – Friday, 5 February 2027 Reduced: €950 | Adults: €1,350

Ten days between the two Atlantic archipelagos that belong to Portugal. From the verdant islands of the hawks to the eternal spring of Madeira – a trip that takes the transition from winter sea to flower island beneath the keel.

It is a small geographical miracle that two of the most beautiful island groups in Europe lie in the middle of the Atlantic – and both fly the Portuguese flag. The Azores in the west, far out on the high seas. Madeira in the south, closer to the African coast than to Europe. Between them opens a stretch of ocean that we shall cover under sail on this trip. It is a perfect medium-distance passage: long enough for a real ocean-going feel, short enough to have time ashore afterwards.

Departure from the Azores
We leave the harbour of Ponta Delgada and set course south-east. The green slopes of São Miguel slowly disappear behind us on the horizon, and after a short while there is nothing beneath the keel but deep blue, open Atlantic. Ahead of us: around 500 nautical miles of open sea – a distance that will take several days under sail and will carry us through one of the calmer sailing areas of the North Atlantic.

On the high seas
This passage is ocean sailing in an agreeable dose. Long enough to really feel the rhythm of life on board – watches, meals, sleep, watches – short enough to look forward to the next island without the voyage becoming endless. Between the two archipelagos runs one of the classic routes of Atlantic seafaring; we too are following in the wake of the Portuguese explorers who have sailed this very route since the 15th century.

With each day the sun climbs a little higher, the air grows warmer, and the first subtropical harbingers appear on the horizon: flying fish, brighter light, a warmer wind. With a bit of luck we shall be accompanied by pods of dolphins or a whale's fluke on the horizon – the route lies right on the migration paths of European great whales.

Arrival at Madeira – the flower island
Madeira has a nickname that stays with you: the island of eternal spring. Even in January and February, bougainvillea, bird-of-paradise flowers and hibiscus bloom here, whilst central Europe lies in its winter sleep. The island rises from the sea as a green, steep rock – nowhere is there flat hinterland, everything is mountain, ravine or cliff.

Porto Santo
Porto Santo, the little sister island to the north-east of Madeira. It is everything that Madeira is not: flat, sandy, fringed by a nine-kilometre-long golden beach. For Christopher Columbus it was home for several years – he lived here with his wife, the daughter of the governor at the time, before he set off westwards.

Sail training on watch rotation
On this trip we sail continuously, in the classic three-watch system. You are part of the crew – with everything that entails: setting and furling sails, taking the helm, keeping lookout, navigation, night watches beneath the clear Atlantic sky. An experienced standing crew will teach you what you need to know. Previous experience is helpful, but not essential – curiosity and a taste for life on board are enough.

What to expect
Ten days of Atlantic in winter mode. A passage with a real ocean-going feel, but manageable distance. The calm stillness of the open sea, followed by the flowering slopes of one of the most beautiful islands in Europe. A crew that quickly becomes a community in the intimacy of life on board. And at the end a harbour where flowers are blooming, whilst back home snow still lies.

Come aboard. Sail from Portugal to Portugal. Arrive where spring never ends.
