Arquipélago da Madeira – Ten days through the Madeira archipelago

Saturday, 6 February – Monday, 15 February 2027

Reduced: €980 | Adults: €1400

A sailing trip entirely devoted to one of the most beautiful island groups in the Atlantic. Round the flower island of Madeira, across to golden Porto Santo and – if wind and weather allow – to the wild Desertas. Ten days of subtropical sun, clear visibility and hands-on sail training in a sailing area that many know only by hearsay.

Most people think of the main island when they hear Madeira. But the Arquipélago da Madeira is more than a rock in the ocean: it is a family of four island groups that together form a small, exquisite sailing area – lying in the warm heart of the North Atlantic, surrounded by deep blue water and shaped by dramatic volcanic landscapes. On this trip we take the time to truly get to know the archipelago. Not as a stopover, but as a destination in its own right.

Departure from Madeira
We start in Funchal or – depending on where the Roald is at that time – on Porto Santo. From here opens up a sailing area that few sailors abroad know: sheltered coastal stretches, open passages between the islands, and plenty of opportunity to really move the ship. The weather and wind conditions in February are mild and usually good for sailing – strong enough for fine manoeuvres, calm enough for leisurely evenings at anchor.

Madeira – The green giant
We sail round parts of the main island of Madeira and get to know it from the sea side – a perspective that remains hidden from most visitors. Sheer cliffs drop vertically into the sea, between them lie small harbours and fishing villages such as Câmara de Lobos, Machico or Ponta do Sol. The famous Cabo Girão rises almost 580 metres from the sea – one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. From our deck you see it in all its majesty.

On the north coast, shaped by the open Atlantic, rugged cliffs alternate with deeply carved valleys. On the south coast, which is more sheltered, Madeira blooms in its subtropical green. Together they form the portrait of this island.

Porto Santo – the golden sister
Around 40 nautical miles northeast of Madeira lies Porto Santo – flat, sandy, with a nine-kilometre golden beach that ranks among the finest Atlantic beaches in Europe. The island is everything that Madeira is not: quiet, expansive, without mountains. Those seeking peace find it here. Christopher Columbus lived for some years on Porto Santo before spinning from here the idea of a western passage to India – a small museum in his former house tells the story.

Between Porto Santo and Madeira we sail a short but open Atlantic passage – a fine opportunity to set the ship under full sail and practise the manoeuvres.

Ilhas Desertas – the enchanted islands
If wind, weather and permits allow, we sail to the Ilhas Desertas – the "deserted islands" southeast of Madeira. They are uninhabited, strictly protected and part of one of the most important nature reserves in the North Atlantic. Here lives one of the last colonies of the Mediterranean monk seal – one of the rarest marine mammals in the world – as well as numerous seabird species. An anchorage off the Desertas at sunset, with the dark volcanic cliffs as backdrop, is one of the most memorable experiences of this trip.

Whales, dolphins and the open Atlantic
The sea around Madeira is one of the best whale-watching areas in Europe. Sperm whales, pilot whales, striped dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins are here year-round. Blue whales are also occasionally sighted. From a tall ship, under sail and without engine noise, encounters with these animals are especially impressive – often dolphins swim alongside the bow for days, and when a whale blows nearby, you hear it long before you see it.

Sail training in an island sailing area
The trip is an interplay of coastal proximity and open sea, anchoring manoeuvres and long tacks, quiet evenings in harbour and night watches under the clear winter sky of the Atlantic. We sail hands-on in a watch system. An experienced permanent crew teaches you everything you need – from the first line to the rigging. Previous experience is welcome, but not essential. What matters are curiosity, a desire for life on board and a willingness to lend a hand.

What to expect
Ten days in one of the warmest sailing areas in Europe in the middle of winter. Sheer cliffs, golden beaches and uninhabited nature reserve islands beneath the keel. Dolphins at the bow, stars at the zenith, Madeira wine at the anchorage. An archipelago that on this voyage you will get to know better than most who have ever been here.

Come aboard. Sail the Arquipélago. Experience Madeira as it can only be experienced from the water.
