Panama Shelter Bay – Panama Canal – Panama Pacific coast to Balboa Yacht Club

Our adventure begins at Shelter Bay Marina, an ideal starting point for sailors wishing to transit the famous Panama Canal. The marina is located at the western end of the canal, on the Caribbean coast, and offers excellent facilities that prepare us thoroughly for our voyage.

The first day is devoted to thorough preparation: we meet for a briefing with our experienced Panama Canal agent, who provides us with all the information on the transit. Passage through the canal requires careful planning and organisation, as we must reckon with special procedures and requirements. Our agent takes care of all the administrative details – from booking the locks to coordinating with the canal pilots, ensuring that the transfer between the oceans proceeds smoothly.

On the second day we set course for the Panama Canal – one of the greatest engineering achievements in the world. We transit the Gatun Locks, which raise us by more than 26 metres, and begin the crossing of the vast Gatun Lake. Along the way we gain fascinating insights into the history of the canal and can enjoy the impressive landscape unfolding around us.

On the third day we reach the Culebra Cut, the narrowest and steepest section of the canal. Here it becomes particularly spectacular as we thread our way through the rock-framed canal section and experience the dramatic scenery. At the end of the Culebra Cut we face the transit through the Miraflores Locks, where we finally enter the Pacific – an unforgettable moment that ranks among the highlights for every sailor.

After the transit we reach our destination, the Balboa Yacht Club. The club is picturesquely situated near the famous Panama Canal and is the ideal place to round off the trip in a relaxed atmosphere. Here we can anchor and make fast to a buoy – with a view of the bustling city skyline and the surrounding mountains.

For participants on trip 2706 this leg is free of charge.

We sail with Lotte, a Bavaria C51 from 2017. Lotte is a special vessel and is constructed without restrictions for ocean use and certified by the Berufsgenossenschaft. She sovereignly takes even high waves and delights with excellent seakeeping. Comfort and dynamics have been uncompromisingly combined, so that a cosy camaraderie on board and an intensive sailing experience await us.

Welcome on board, Willkommen an Bord, Grüezi mitenand ond willkomme a Bord !
