Price: the middle half of prices for the most common trip duration, with the duration in brackets. Trips booking the whole yacht are not included. Most departures: the three months with the most start dates over the next twelve months. A trip can count in several sailing areas, for example in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic.

All countries

Many trips pass through several countries, for example from island to island in the Caribbean. Here you will find every country in which a trip is currently taking place, together with the number of trips.

Which sailing area suits you?

That depends mainly on three things: when you have time, how much wind you like and how far you are willing to travel.

For beginners

In Croatia and in the Ionian Sea many islands lie close together. Distances are short, the bays are sheltered and tides hardly play a role. On the Baltic Sea and in Denmark it is similar, only cooler, and the weather changes faster.

For more wind

In the Aegean the Meltemi often blows hard from the north in summer. On the North Sea and in the English Channel, tides and currents come into play. You learn a lot here, but you need reasonably good sea legs.

Warm in winter

From November to April you can sail in the Canary Islands, in the Caribbean, in Thailand and on the Seychelles. In late autumn, the Atlantic crossings set off from the Canary Islands or the Cape Verde Islands for the Caribbean.

Long distances

If you want to build up nautical miles or experience night sailing, you will find them on Mile building and on deliveries, for example to the Azores or along the coast of Portugal.

Far north

In Norway, on the Lofoten Islands and in Polar waters it is cool even in summer. In return, there are fjords, mountains right at the water's edge and, in June and July, days without darkness.

Calm waters and groups

On the IJsselmeer the water is shallow and mostly calm. Many sailing trips take place on traditional ships, which also take larger groups.

Boat types

What it's like on board also depends on the vessel. Here is how many current sailing trips there are for each boat type.

Boat typeTripsTypical price per personWhat it's like on board
Sailing yacht (monohull)1,678700–950 € (1 week)The classic sailing boat with a single hull. It heels over when sailing and responds directly to wind and waves.
Catamaran461990–2,150 € (1 week)Two hulls, plenty of space on deck and hardly any heel. Often found in warm sailing areas.
Traditional sailing vessel194700–1,750 € (1 week)Historic vessels such as flat-bottomed barges and schooners. Guests help out on board.
Tall ship1001,100–3,800 € (1 week)Large sailing ships with several masts, often on long passages.

Frequently asked questions about sailing areas

Short answers to the questions asked most often.

Which sailing areas have the most sailing trips?

Most current sailing trips are found here: Mediterranean (916), Baltic Sea (510) and Adriatic (506). The figures change constantly as listings are updated.

Where can I sail in winter?

From December to February, most sailing trips in these sailing areas start: Caribbean, Canary Islands / Madeira, Indian Ocean and Pacific. In addition, there are the Atlantic crossings, which usually lead from the Canary Islands or the Cape Verde Islands to the Caribbean in November and December.

Where is a week-long sailing trip cheapest?

Currently, week-long sailing trips are cheapest here: IJsselmeer (usually 680–700 €), Baltic Sea (usually 650–790 €) and Canary Islands / Madeira (usually 630–800 €). This refers to the price per person for 7 to 9 days. On top of this there is usually the onboard kitty for food, harbour fees and diesel.

When is the season in the Mediterranean?

There are sailing trips in the Mediterranean all year round. Most sailing trips start in May, July and August. In high summer it is hot and the popular bays are crowded. May, June and September are quieter.

Which sailing area is suitable for beginners?

Areas with short distances, sheltered bays and no strong tides are well suited, for example Croatia, the Ionian Sea or the Danish South Sea Islands. On a cabin charter, the skipper is in charge of the boat anyway.

What do tides mean for guests on a cabin charter?

In the North Sea, the English Channel and the Atlantic, the water rises and falls by several metres twice a day. The skipper plans when you cast off accordingly. That sometimes means an early start, but you get to experience the tidal flats and currents.

Do I need a sailing licence for a cabin charter?

No. On a cabin charter, the skipper is in charge of the boat. You don't need a licence and usually no experience either. What the provider expects is stated in the sailing trip description.
