La Palma is the departure harbour for our voyage to the Cape Verde Islands.
The Canary Island archipelago is praised as 'tropical Spain'. In Germany's cold and rainy November weather, they offer the vision of eternal spring, of blue skies, the hot yellow of the sun, endless sandy beaches, palm trees and pleasant temperatures.
Each of the seven Canary Islands has its own charm; on our voyage we focus on the island of La Palma. In clear weather we can see from a great distance the peak of Pico de Teide volcano on Tenerife, which at 3,717 m is Spain's highest mountain. The summit is often covered with snow, although it lies only 300 nm outside the tropics.

For the crossing over the North Atlantic Ocean to the Cape Verde archipelago we need about six night passages. With good seamanship and the proven watch system we will enjoy the fascination of offshore sailing before we reach Palmeira on the island of Sal after about 800 nm.

Average daytime temperatures of 25 degrees combined with 23-degree warm sea water soon make us forget winter in Europe.
The little town of Santa Maria beckons with wide beaches and African ambience.

With a bit of luck we can observe whales, sea turtles or the exuberant play of dolphins.

With the north-east trade wind in the sails Sao Nicolau can be reached very well and we enjoy tropical blue-water sailing to the full. Sao Nicolau is small, yet very diverse. The coastal formation is one of the seven wonders of Cape Verde and in small villages time seems to have stood still.

Our last leg takes us over the turquoise Atlantic Ocean past Santa Lucia to Mindelo on Sao Vicente. Mindelo is the Cape Verdean capital of music, culture and art. In the markets it is loud and very authentic, in the old town there is colourful bustle.
The uplifting feeling of having achieved it will set in when we bring this eventful trip to a close in the harbour of Mindelo after 14 days.

In Cape Verde there is only one marina for sports boats in Mindelo; on the other islands we will mainly lie at anchor in sheltered bays or harbour facilities.
The steady north-east trade wind provides optimal sailing conditions with wind speeds between 15 and 25 knots.
The Cape Verde Islands are of volcanic origin with volcanic peaks of up to 2,829 metres.
The climate is balanced all year round and it never gets excessively hot. Rain hardly ever falls in Cape Verde, at most once as drizzling trade wind fog in the middle elevations of the mountainous islands.

The willingness to engage with nature, the sea and the characteristics of sailing with respect and enjoyment should be present. Daily destinations are discussed and selected with the crew and then realised together as a team.

We sail with the Lotte, a Bavaria C51 from 2017. The Lotte is a special vessel and is designed without restriction for offshore use and approved by the professional association. She takes even high waves confidently and impresses with excellent sea-keeping. Comfort and dynamics have been combined uncompromisingly, so that a cosy togetherness on board and an intensive sailing experience await us.
