Let the wind blow through your hair and set off on a 'grand voyage' with elan on the IJsselmeer. A relaxing water-borne holiday awaits you with many exciting impressions. From Enkhuizen we sail according to wind, weather and mood into the Wadden Sea to the Frisian Islands.
The IJsselmeer and Wadden Sea beckon for a little adventure. On board, skipper, mate and the elan tour leader await you for a varied holiday week. Where possible, each family has one or two cabins to themselves. But life mostly takes place above deck or in the large saloon with galley. On the very first day we head out onto the water. During this first leg, everyone is carefully introduced to the ship and before long all can actively lend a hand. That's important when a vessel weighing over 100 tonnes ploughs through the waves. Should there be less to do during a longer passage, the games chest is brought out. There's no chance of boredom. In the Wadden Sea there are seals to admire and when the ship dries out on the mudflats, not only lugworms are to be found. On the islands we explore the dunes and long sandy beaches. Come aboard.
Our Ships
Built over 100 years ago and originally used as cargo vessels, these flat-bottomed ships have now been fitted out to modern standards (safety and technology) for passenger sailing, and offer families from all over the world the chance to experience the beauty of nature and the adventure of sailing. The vessels we use are similar in rigging and interior layout.
The fittings of the single- and twin-masted ships are traditional and comfortable. A large saloon (living/dining room) with stylish interior and the galley (kitchen) form the centre below deck, providing space for larger groups. The cabins (sleeping quarters) for two and/or more persons have washing facilities and are bright and airy. Toilets and showers are of course available on board and in the harbours.
On the upper deck there is something to do for anyone who wishes. The 'cockpit', a sort of seating area on deck, offers the opportunity to sit, read and play, and for convivial gatherings.
Cabin allocation (2- to 4-berth cabins available)
It is not possible on every ship for each family to have its own cabin. It may be that we accommodate children together in 4-berth cabins or also two solo travellers with a child.
The Sailing Area
The IJsselmeer in the north of the Netherlands is divided into the southern IJsselmeer, the so-called Markermeer, and the northern section. Already on the journey over the dam from Lelystad to Enkhuizen you feel as though you are at sea. All around the IJsselmeer many small towns beckon, e.g. Medemblik, Stavoren, Edam, Hoorn, each with its own charm. The Frisian Islands Texel, Vlieland and Terschelling are frequently visited. To reach them you must pass through the lock at the Afsluitdijk between Den Oever and Harlingen. Often underestimated are the many canals that run through the land around the IJsselmeer, which pose no obstacle to flat-bottomed ships.
Whether young or old, tall or short – everyone who wishes can be active. Right in the thick of it, not just watching: setting sails, weighing anchor, hauling falls and sheets, tying knots, winding the centreboard, feeling the wind in your hair, sensing sun, waves and spray – and much more. Cooking for the crew on board becomes not a duty but a shared experience in which the children can also help. Because anyone who wants to become a junior skipper must lend a hand in all areas.
