Start and end of the trip: Ullapool
The north-west coast of Scotland is one of the last truly wild coastal landscapes in Europe.
High mountains rising directly from the sea, deserted beaches, small fishing harbours, deep sea lochs and remote islands make this area ideal for a voyage on a tall ship.
During this 9-day voyage, we allow ourselves to be guided as much as possible by wind, weather and tides.
Instead of a fixed itinerary, we enjoy the freedom to sail wherever it happens to be most beautiful or interesting.
This makes every voyage different and unique.
This special sailing voyage begins and ends in the charming harbour town of Ullapool on the north-west coast of Scotland. Although Ullapool is a relatively young settlement, it was founded at the end of the 18th century during the heyday of herring fishing. The surrounding area is renowned for its rugged beauty, its impressive nature, its abundant wildlife and the numerous bird species that have made their home here.
On the evening of arrival, we will be welcomed on board with a sumptuous dinner. Over good food we get to know the crew and our fellow travellers, whilst anticipation for the coming days grows.
Possible destinations include the Outer Hebrides with places such as Stornoway and Tarbert, the impressive Shiant Isles with their enormous seabird colonies, the sheltered lochs of Wester Ross, Loch Ewe, Lochinver and the rugged coast of Assynt. Along the way there are countless small anchorages, uninhabited islands and remote bays that can never be reached by large cruise ships.
Some days we spend making longer passages across open water; on others we might simply stay a little longer at a particularly beautiful spot, because there is no reason to sail on. There is ample time for walks ashore, visiting small villages, observing wildlife or simply enjoying life on board whilst the ship lies peacefully at anchor.
The chances of seeing seals, dolphins, puffins and sometimes even whales are very good. It is particularly the combination of raw Atlantic nature and the tranquillity of remote anchorages that makes this region so special.
On board the ship it is not only about the destinations, but equally about the journey itself. Anyone who wishes can actively help with sailing, steering and navigating, but it is just as welcome simply to relax and enjoy the scenery.
This voyage is aimed at people who love adventure, nature and discovering special places — a voyage where, in the end, the wind decides where we go.
After a final morning excursion ashore and setting the sails, we begin our return voyage towards Ullapool. Along the way we reflect on the impressions of this voyage: the open sea, the islands, the tranquillity, the togetherness.
In the early evening we reach the harbour of Ullapool once more
