SPITZBERGEN 2 – Longyearbyen to Longyearbyen – PO-17-07-2027-R

Far 'up north' in the North Atlantic lies the Svalbard archipelago, which belongs to Norway. In Norwegian, the archipelago is called Svalbard, which means 'cold coast' in German. The over 400 islands and skerries lie north of the Arctic Circle between 74 and 81 degrees north latitude and between 10 and 35 degrees east longitude. The climate around Svalbard is Arctic. It is cool all year round with regular but low precipitation. The coastal regions are snow-free for only about six weeks in summer, and the fjords freeze only temporarily in winter. Whilst summers are cool, winters are very mild despite the northerly location, as the West Spitsbergen Current, a branch of the Gulf Stream, transports relatively warm water along the west coast into the Arctic Ocean. In summer, which begins sunny at the start of June and ends with fog, rain and snow at the end of September, temperatures range between −2 °C and 17 °C. Expected trip itinerary:

From Longyearbyen, Svalbard's main settlement, our expedition starts along the western coast heading north. On numerous stops in the countless fjords but also in some of the local settlements, we discover the unique nature of this remote archipelago. Rich fauna can be admired as well as the continuously calving glaciers that extend right to the water's edge of the Arctic Ocean. Our destination will then once again be Longyearbyen, from where you can conveniently start your journey home by air. Depending on the weather and schedule, it may be necessary to cover longer sections of the voyage under engine. Total distance: approx. 250 nautical miles.
