If you had asked me just before this sailing trip on the Adriatic whether I was a good sailor, my answer would have been "Of course".
I was full of expectations and plans: sailing, learning harbour manoeuvres, trying out the dinghy, taking photographs, fishing and swimming. But the sailing trip on the Adriatic, which was meant to last 13 days, was suddenly over after a week. A voyage with so many possibilities took me to fantastic places, but for me the trip remains without an ending.

An all-round successful trip through the Croatian islands. The boat was an absolute stroke of luck: superbly balanced, very easy to handle and extremely well organised. In calmer phases the yacht was easily manageable single-handed. In higher seas and strong winds on the final legs, however, the well-practised three-man crew proved an unbeatable advantage for quick manoeuvres and full sailing enjoyment.

We learnt and practised a great deal and did indeed get up early, but it was a wonderful, interesting and sunny week that I look back on fondly.

Both manufacturers have their roots in the 1970s, and both offer boats for beginners, families and regatta sailors…
Cruising sailors who set off on major voyages across oceans and into remote regions face a wide range of dangers. It's no wonder that safety concepts are hotly debated in sailing circles – especially since several well-known accidents revealed the weaknesses of conventional production yachts. This article examines the most common causes of sinking yachts and takes an in-depth look at two modern blue-water yachts that…
