Winter ’27: SAILING TRIP CAPE VERDE ISLANDS FROM SAL – last cabin for man available

The 15 islands of the Cape Verde archipelago lie like pearls on a string 500 km west of Africa. Cape Verde is divided into the northern islands "to windward", the Ilhas de Barlavento, and the southern islands "to leeward", the Ilhas de Sotavento.

Whilst the eastern islands of Sal, Boavista and Maio are characterised by dry, flat desert landscapes and white sandy beaches, the western islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Fogo and Santiago have high volcanic mountain ranges and the landscapes have two faces. Pine and fir forests, green valleys and lush vegetation alternate with barren landscapes, some of them shaped by lava fields.

Sal is renowned as a windsurfing and kitesurfing paradise with golden sandy beaches and unique dune landscapes. Dolphin and whale sightings are not uncommon when sailing!
Boa Vista – just as developed for tourism as Sal – has stunning beaches, perhaps the finest in Cape Verde. But there are also remote beaches that are often deserted and where things are nice and relaxed, a real insider tip.
São Vicente impresses with attractive beaches and its lively harbour town of Mindelo, a melting pot of cultures. In the harbour you can stroll through the fish market or refresh yourself in the cafés of the old town right by the sea. The quiet village of São Pedro is popular with windsurfers and wave riders.
The second-largest island of Cape Verde, Santo Antão, surprises in the north and east with a subtropical climate and rich vegetation. Date palms grow here, and orange and almond trees also shape the landscape.
São Nicolau is a nature paradise with rugged mountain slopes but also beautiful wide beaches, ideal for walkers.

The southern islands of Maio, Santiago and Fogo can be visited on the 14-day sailing trip.

Maio is a tranquil idyll with little vegetation and gorgeous deserted beaches, where you can swim wonderfully and let your soul unwind.
Santiago is the largest island of Cape Verde with diverse landscapes. There are arid steppe areas, fertile valleys, beautiful sandy beaches and high mountains. Santiago is rather little developed for tourism.
Pico de Fogo dominates the view on Fogo. At 2,829 metres it is the highest volcano in Cape Verde and still spews sulphur vapours today. There are a few small beaches with black lava sand; the tourist highlights here are mainly walking and trekking tours.

The exact routing depends on the weather and wind conditions. The Cape Verde Islands lie in the Sahel zone. The climatic conditions are excellent for sailing, with 350 days of sunshine a year and steady trade winds of 4 to 6 Beaufort from a northeasterly direction. All the islands have a pleasantly dry climate in the winter months, with virtually no rainfall. The 'Harmattan', a dry desert wind from the east, brings Saharan sand and can restrict visibility. Under storm conditions, considerable waves can develop. At night it cools down a bit with the wind; temperatures can drop to just below 20°C.
