From Kiel Fjord the route takes you through the Kiel Canal, onwards into the German Bight and finally to Wilhelmshaven, depending on wind, weather and tide. Along the way, longer passages, night sailing, watch keeping and special stops such as Glückstadt, Helgoland or Norderney may become part of the voyage.

— FROM LABOE TOWARDS WILHELMSHAVEN —

The voyage begins in Laboe, a lively seaside resort near Kiel. Beach, cafés and small shops are just a short walk from the harbour, so you can arrive relaxed before the actual trip begins.

After boarding you'll get to know the ship, the crew and your fellow sailors. Then we'll see which route best suits the wind, weather and tidal planning.

With easterly winds, there may be another day's sailing on the Baltic first. Under other conditions, we'll soon head through the Kiel Canal towards Schleswig-Holstein's west coast. After that, the North Sea takes centre stage: German Bight, tides, sea room and the approach to Wilhelmshaven.

The destination is Wilhelmshaven. On Friday a nautical event begins there, creating additional atmosphere in the harbour and bringing many sailing ships together.

— MILE BUILDING AND EXPERIENCING NIGHT SAILING —

This voyage is a genuine mile-building trip. That means: sailing and covering a considerable distance are at the heart of it.

Depending on conditions, we may continue sailing at night. This creates a distinctive rhythm on board of watches, off-watches, shared meals, rest periods and concentrated moments on deck.

Keeping watch is not compulsory, but a special opportunity to experience the voyage more intensively. During a watch you keep lookout, monitor course and conditions, assist with sail manoeuvres or take the helm under guidance.

It's precisely the combination of starry skies, the ship's movement, concentration and teamwork that makes night sailing one of the most memorable experiences on board for many crew members.

Depending on conditions, special places may become part of the voyage along the way.

Glückstadt on the Elbe is a charming little harbour town and could be a possible stopover on the way towards the North Sea.

Heligoland would be a real highlight: red cliff faces, bird colonies, North Sea air and the famous Lange Anna make the island a special destination in the German Bight.

Norderney also comes into consideration as a possible route. The East Frisian island is known for long beaches, fresh North Sea air and relaxed island atmosphere.

Which places are actually called at is decided by the skipper en route based on wind, weather, tide, safety and feasibility. This flexibility is precisely what mile building is all about.

On board you're not a passive guest. You can actively help with the sailing, handle lines, contribute to navigation, take the helm or assist with manoeuvres.

Sailing experience is helpful but not essential. The crew will explain what needs doing and involve you according to your experience and interest.

More important than prior knowledge are motivation, an active attitude and a desire to experience real sea sailing. Anyone who wants to get involved will find plenty of opportunities on this trip.
